일제 후반기 시에 나타난 향토성 문제 (The Issues of Rurality in Korean Poetry of the Late Japanese Colonial Period)

초록

‘향토성’은 일제 후반기 한국시의 특징 가운데 하나이다. 일반적으로 이 시기의 시에 나타난 ‘향토성’ 문제는 ‘조선적인 것’과의 연속성이라는 맥락에서, 또는 민족주의적인 저항이라는 맥락에서 논의되고 있다. 그러나 이 논문은 ‘향토성’ 논의가 <서구=보편/조선(동양)=특수>라는 등식이 <동양(일본)=보편/조선=특수>라는 도식으로 바뀜에 따라서 등장할 수 있었고, 따라서 친일의 여부와는 상관없이 민족주의보다는 동양 담론의 영향권 내에 있었다는 사실을 해명하고 있다. 즉, 이 시기 한국시에 나타난 ‘향토성’은 이국취미를 선호하는 제국의 시선에 의해 매개된 표상에 불과했다. 일제 후반기에 접어들어 일본은 ‘동양’이라는 새로운 보편을 사고하기 시작했다. 이때 ‘동양(일본)’이란 국민국가로서의 일본이 아니라 동양 각국을 포함한 광의의 개념이었다. 그러나 그러한 관념이 실제 정치적 상황에 적용될 때에는 ‘동양(일본)’은 항상 국민국가 일본과 겹쳐지는 폭력의 형식을 띠었다. 이 지점에서 <서구=보편/동양=특수>라는 등식은 <동양(일본)=보편/조선=특수>라는 도식으로 바뀌게 된다. 민족주의는 대개 이 ‘특수’를 보편으로 흡수되지 않으려는 차이화의 운동이라고 평가함으로써 의미를 부여하지만, 실제로 ‘특수’는 논리적으로 항상 ‘보편’의 보편성을 전제할 수밖에 없고, 이러한 ‘보편’의 선차성이 ‘특수’를 ‘차이’에 의해 매개된 동일화(보편화) 과정으로 만들어버린다. 이것은 ‘특수’가 피식민지인들의 저항에 의해 성취된 것이 아니라 제국의 이국취향에 의해 배분된 자리였음을 의미한다.

영어초록

"Rurality" is one of the main characteristics in Korean poetry of the late period of Japanese colonial rule. The issues of rurality appearing in this period's poetry are generally discussed in the context of "Joseon-like things" and continuity or nationalist resistance. However, this thesis attempts to make clear that discussions on rurality were able to emerge as the equation that the West is universality and Joseon (the East) is particularity was replaced by the equation that the East (Japan) is universality and Joseon is particularity, and therefore that the discussions were within the influence of discourse on the East rather than nationalism, regardless of having pro-Japanese elements or not. In other words, the rurality in Korean poetry of the era was just representations of the empire's preference to foreign tastes with the poems as a medium. In the late Japanese colonial period, Japan started to think about a new concept of universality named the East. In this case the East (Japan) did not mean Japan as a national country but had a broad notion including every country in the East. However, when such notion was applied to real political conditions, the East (Japan) was equal to a national country Japan assuming the form of violence. At this point the equation that the West is universality and the East is particularity is replaced by the equation that the East (Japan) is universality and Joseon is particularity. Nationalism earns its meaning largely by the evaluation that it is a movement of differentiation where its subjects try not to let their particularity absorbed by universality, but in reality particularity cannot help but premise on universality and such priority of universality in order makes particularity a process of identification (universalization), with differences as a medium. This means that particularity is apportioned by the empire's foreign tastes, not achieved by the resistance of the colonized.
