초록

구자운은 1950~60년대 문학사에서 중요하게 언급됨에도 불구하고 정작 본격적인 연구 성과는 그리 많지 않은 시인 중 한 명이다. 그러나 순수 서정을 토대로 민족 언어를 새롭게 전개하고 개인의 우울과 사회의 역학을 심층적으로 들여다보며 그 사이에 놓인 예술적 삶과 언어를 형상화하려 한 그의 시적 작업은 지속적으로 평가할 가치가 있다. 본 연구는 기존의 논의를 보완하는 작업으로, 구자운의 시 중에서 상대적으로 잘 다루어지지 않은 바다 관련 시편들을 대상으로 삼아 그의 시세계를 보다 구체적으로 밝히고자 하였다.
1960년대 들어, 구자운은 이전까지 도자기에 향했던 관심을 ‘바다’로 돌린다. 바다는 이 시기 구자운의 시세계를 구축하는 틀로 기능하고 있다고 할 수 있을 만큼 시의 서술어를 지배한다. 시의 화자는 바다를 통해 현실을 인식하고, 자신의 정신 상태와 현실을 다시 바다에 투사하여 읽는 것이다. 무력하고 왜소한 화자에게 바다는 거대하고 압도적인 힘을 보여주는 존재로, 정체되고 고착화한 현실을 타파하는 공간으로 나타난다. 특히 바다의 역동성은 화자에게 ‘작은’ 생명을 죽음으로써 안는 더 ‘큰’ 생명으로 다가온다. 그리하여 바다에서의 죽음은 곧 ‘원천’으로의 회귀이자 더 큰 생명에의 투신이 되어 소외와 고통의 현실로부터 해방되는 것으로 여겨진다. 구자운 시에서 그러한 환상은 영원성을 실현하는 방법으로 제시된다.
구자운의 시에서 ‘바다’는 혼돈과 사랑의 세계로서, 모종의 억압적 힘에 ‘저항하는 힘’이 가득한 공간으로 이해된다. 그래서 그에게 ‘군중’의 모습은 바다와 겹친다. ‘바다’는 실제 바다이기도 하면서, 속성의 유사성으로 인해 때로는 그와 동시에 ‘항거하는 군중’이 되기도 하는 것이다. 바다는 비록 과거 시대의 근원성은 상실했지만 특유의 역동성을 가졌기에 그에게는 ‘피안’이며 ‘자유’이며, 따라서 삶의 희망으로 여겨진다. 그러나 안정과 안전을 느낄 만한 ‘장소’가 현실에서 부재한 상황에서, 시적 주체는 자신의 이러한 바다가 주는 환상에 침잠하지 못하고 끝내 의심하며 방황을 종식하지 못하는 모습을 보인다. 바다 공간을 끊임없이 ‘생명의 바다’로 치환하는 낭만주의적 대응에도 불구하고, 그러한 대응은 ‘무한히 열림’으로서의 바다의 공간성으로부터 야기되는 공포와 불안의 감정을 근본적으로 해소할 수는 없는 것이다.
지금까지 구자운의 바다 관련 시편들은 「청자수병」으로 대변되는 이상적 세계에의 추구로부터 다시 전통적인 「학」의 세계로 이행하는 데 있어 과도기적 성격을 갖는 작품들로 이해되었다. 그러나 ‘바다’는 세계에 대응하는 인식의 틀로서 구자운의 시 전반에 작용한다고 할 수 있다. 그것은 구자운 시세계를 이루는 하나의 ‘축’이자 또 하나의 ‘국면’으로서 자리 잡고 있으며, 한편으로는 ‘청자수병’과 ‘학’의 세계를 만든 시적 논리가 바다 관련 시들에 이미 내재해 있기도 하다는 점에서 다시금 위치 지워져야 한다. 특히 개인과 사회의 관계에 관한 근본적인 고민을 ‘바다’ 이미지를 통해 ‘공간적-시적’ 언어로 풀어냈기에, 이러한 그의 시적 논리와 상상력은 한국 현대시사에서 재평가될 필요가 있다.

영어초록

Koo Ja-woon is one of the poets who are importantly mentioned in the history of literature in the 1950s and 1960s, but the number of full-fledged research achievements is limited. However, his poetic works, which attempts to embody the artistic life and language in between, newly unfolding the national language based on pure lyricism, taking an in-depth look at individual depression and the dynamics of society, is worth continuing to evaluate. This study complements the existing discussions, and aims to clarify his poetic world in more detail by targeting the sea-related poems that are relatively untreated among Koo Ja-woon's poems.
In the 1960s, Koo Ja-woon turned his interest in ceramics introduced in the 1950s to the sea. The sea dominates the predicates of the sentences that make up the poem to the extent that it can be said to function as a framework for constructing his poetry world. The narrator of the poem perceives reality through the sea, and reads his mental state and reality by projecting it back onto the sea. To a helpless and ‘small’ speaker of the Koo Ja-woon’s poem, the sea appears as a being that shows enormous and overwhelming power. The dynamism of the sea space makes it a space of possibility to break through a stagnant and fixed reality, that is, a reality that gives the speaker a sense of alienation and pain, in other words, it makes them regarded as a more ‘big’ life embraced by the death of a ‘small’ life. In that sense, the death of a man who commits to the sea becomes a return to the ‘source’ and a commitment to a greater life, and such an illusion is presented as a way to realize eternity in Koo Ja-woon's poem.
In Koo Ja-woon's poem, the sea is understood as a world of chaos and love, a space full of ‘power to resist’ some sort of repressive force. So, for him, the appearance of ‘crowd’ overlaps with the sea. ‘Sea’ is also the actual sea, and sometimes it is also the ‘rebel crowd’ due to the similarity of the identified attributes. Although the sea has lost its originality in the past, it has a peculiar dynamism, which is why it is regarded as a “Transmundane” and “freedom” to him, and thus a hope of life. However, in a situation where there is no ‘place’ to feel stability and safety in reality, the poetic subject does not submerge in his fantasies, doubts, and cannot end wandering. Despite the romantic response that constantly replaces the sea with the sea of ​​life, it reveals the fact that it cannot fundamentally resolve the feelings of fear and anxiety arising from the spatiality as ‘infinitely open.’Until now, Koo Ja-woon's sea-related poems have been understood as works of a transitional character in transitioning from the pursuit of the ideal world represented by the “Cheongjasubyeong(celadon kuṇḍikā)” to the world of “Hak(crane)”. However, for Koo Ja-woon, the sea is acting in the whole world of poetry as a frame of recognition that responds to the world. It is positioned as an axis of the poetry world of Koo Ja-woon and as another phase. On the one hand, it needs to be repositioned again, because the poetic logic that created the world of “Cheongjasubyeong” and “Hak” is already embedded in sea-related poems for some.
