백석의 시에 나타난 식물 이미지 연구 (A Study on Plant Images in Baekseok’s Poems)

초록

이 논문은 백석의 시에 산재해 있는 식물 이미지를 탐구의 대상으로 삼았다. 식물 이미지는 유년의 기억, 음식의 재료, 생활 도구 등에 백석 시를 이끄는 중요한 추동체가 되고 있는데, 그의 시에 등장하는 식물명의 분포 수만 해도 여타 시인들과 비교할 수 없을 정도다. 본 연구자는 백석이 일반인들에게 생소한 식물명을 시에 다수 도입해 사용한 이유를 밝혀보고자 했고, 식물명의 평안도식 표기에 따른 해석의 오류를 지적하고자 했다. 백석의 시에서 식물 이미지와 식물명이 구사된 형태, 그것을 시어로 활용하는 분별력의 근원을 파악하면서 식물 이미지가 백석의 시에서 어떤 상징적 작용을 하는지 고찰해 보았다. 백석의 식물 이미지 사용은 매우 의도적인 시적 전략이었던 것으로 보인다. 한국에서 과학적 지식의 하나로 식물을 연구하기 시작하는 시점과 백석이 시집 『사슴』을 출간하는 시기는 거의 일치하는데 이를 통해 백석이 식물명과 그 자질을 인식하게 된 계기를 추정할 수 있었다. 나아가 식물명을 시어로 적극 활용한 백석의 시작 방식은 역사성을 인식하는 태도와도 연결된다고 보았다.
이 논문은 백석이 인간과 영혼을 가진 식물을 동일한 시각으로 바라보았다는 점에 주목하면서 식물 이미지를 통해 근대에 맞선 시적 주체의 태도를다각도로 살펴보았다. 백석은 식물을 통해 공동체의 기억을 구체화함으로써 현실의 지난함을 통과하려고 했던 것으로 판단된다. 그는 열거를 통해삶의 구체성을 드러내는가 하면 그것을 감각적 이미지로 전환시키기도 하고 음운의 반복을 통해 빚어지는 한국어의 질감과 형태적 특성, 그리고 음성적 자질을 충분히 활용하였다. 백석이 식물명을 자주 호명하고 식물적 이미지에 집중한 것은 근대가 휘두르는 폭력의 맞은편에 식물을 세워둠으로써 근대를 넘어서려고 했던 것으로 보인다.
이와 더불어 식물을 시적 장치로 활용함으로써 사라져가는 공동체의 언어와 의식을 끝까지 붙잡아두는 효과도 얻게 된다는 점을 확인하였다. 그것은 식물이 시인의 정신적 지향성을 제시하는 매개가 되는 지점과 연결된다.
상당히 많은 시가 백석 자신의 어느 시기 개인적인 체험이 바탕에 깔린 것이지만 시를 개인사의 영역에 머물게 하지 않고 공동체의 고통으로 확장시키는 결정적인 요소는 식물 이미지라고 해도 과언이 아니다.

영어초록

This paper made the image of plants lain sporadically in Baekseok’s poems as an object of inquiry. The plant image has become an important driving force leading Baekseok poems in childhood memories, food ingredients, and living tools. The distribution of plant names in his poetry alone is not comparable to other poets. This researcher tried to find out why Baekseok introduced a lot of plant names that were unfamiliar to the public and tried to point out errors in the interpretation of plant names according to the notation of Pyongando languages. This researcher examined the symbolic action of the plant image in Baekseok’s poetry, while grasping the plant name, the poetic form using it as a poem. and the source of discernment using the plant image in Baekseok’s poetry. It seems that Baekseok’s use of plant images was a very intentional poetic strategy. It was possible to estimate the moment when Baekseok recognized plant names and their qualities, from when as one of the scientific knowledge in Korea, the timing of researching plants and the timing of publication of the poet “Deer” by Baekseok coincide. Furthermore, I thought that the method of writing Baekseok poems, which actively used plant names as poetic words, was also linked to the attitude of recognizing the historicity.
This paper examines the attitude of the poetic subject against modernity through the plant image from various angles, paying attention to the fact that Baekseok looked at plants and humans with souls from the same perspective. It is believed that Baekseok tried to pass the miserable life of reality by embodying the memory of the community through plants. He reveals the specific properties of life through enumeration or transforms it into a sensory image, and makes full use of the texture, morphological characteristics, and phonetic qualities of the Korean language made through repetition of phonology. It seems that Baekseok frequently called the plant name and concentrated on the plant image, trying to overcome the modernity by the plant image opposite the violence that modernity wielded.
Additionally, it was confirmed that the use of plants as a poetic device also has the effect of holding to the end on the language and consciousness of the disappearing community in the ethnic group. It is connected to the point where the plant is the medium that the poet’s mental orientation is presented. Although a lot of poetry is based on Baekseok’s own personal experiences at some time, it is not an exaggeration to say that the critical factor that expands poetry into the suffering of the community without staying in the area of individual history is the plant image. The plant images, along with food images, are important components of Baekseok’s poems, and are thought to be important keywords in appreciating and researching his poems.
