초록

그동안 진행된 해외 한인문학을 다룬 연구의 주요 패러다임은 ‘국가’ 혹은 ‘민족’ ‘디아스포라’, ‘한국인으로서의 정체성’의 틀에 맞춰 연구가 진행되었다는 아쉬움이 있다. 주지하다시피 디아스포라는 주로 분산, 공동체, 집단을 의미하며 모국이나 국가에 매우 강하게 얽매여 있다. 디아스포라는 반드시 ‘고향’으로 돌아가야 하는 상태를 지칭한다. 이에 디아스포라 개념은 현재 거주하고 있는 사람들의 삶을 타자화하는 측면이 강하다. 그러므로 자발적 이주를 하였던 사람들의 주체성을 몰각하고, 해외문학을 철저히 한국-서울 중심의 주변문학으로 전락시키는 오류를 범할 수 있다. 이에 반해 트랜스내셔널리즘에서는 모국과의 단절은 일어나지 않으며, 모국이라는 곳에 얽매이지 않는다. 다시 말해 두 개 이상의 국가에서 평행적 삶을 유지한다. 즉, 거주지와 모국의 영향을 함께 받는다. 그러므로 ‘트랜스내셔널’은 “기존의 ‘디아스포라’, ‘다문화주의’ 등에서 충족되지 못한 어떤 부분에 대한 기대를 나타낼 수 있”으며 “근대의 민족국가적인 인식 틀로는 해석이나 예측이 불가능한 객관적 상황이나 주관적 인식”을 읽어낼 수 있는 단서를 제공한다. 일테면 일국 중심의 국수적 정체성을 해체할 수 있다는 점, 자발적 이주민들의 삶이나 의지를 긍정하거나 있는 그대로 바라볼 수 있다는 점에서 트랜스내셔널 관점은 의의를 지닌다. 민족국가의 완강한 경계선이 무너지고, 초국가적 이동과 이주가 일상화되어 가고 있는 현 시대에 해외 한인 문학을 접근하는 방식 역시 좀 더 확장되어야 한다. 다양한 조건과 맥락과 형태와 기원을 갖는 해외 한인 문학을 ‘디아스포라 문학’이라는 하나의 범주로 구분 짓고자 하는 것에는 무리가 있다.
본 연구는 호주한인 시문학을 읽어내는 방법 중 하나로 화자의 트랜스내셔널한 특성과 그 의미를 고찰하고자 하였다. 그 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 공간의 전유와 트랜스내셔널이다. 작품 속에서 거주 공간의 자연풍경이나 인물들은 낭만적 이상향으로서의 모습으로 그려지고 있다. 호주 한인 대부분이 자발적인 이주 주체였음에도 불구하고 이주 후 문화적 혼종지에서 주변과 현실, 이상 사이에서 갈등을 겪기 마련이다. 이를 극복하기 위해 무의미한 “공간”을 특별한 “장소”로 만들고자 하는 일종의 ‘영토화’ 혹은 ‘공간의 전유’가 이루어진다. 이때 낯선 공간을 낭만적이거나 평화로운 곳, 때로는 과도한 신비로움을 지닌 장소로 묘사하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 공간의 환상성과 트랜스내셔널이다. 낭만적 작품은 종종 노동현실이나 고통스러운 현재의 상황이나 공간을 은폐한다. 그러나 본 연구에서 살펴본 작품들은 이러한 한계를 뛰어넘는다. 일테면 이채롭고 이국적 공간에 숨어있는 현실의 고통을 직접적으로 드러내는 이미지로 그려내고 있다. 그럼에도 그것은 환상성을 품고 있는데 이는 정체성을 형성하고자 하는 현실로서의 개인의식으로 읽을 수 있다. 마지막으로 자의식의 발현 장소와 트랜스내셔널이다. 작품 속 화자는 고통의 ‘공간’에서 새로운 세계로의 ‘장소’를 꿈꾼다. 이때 ‘장소’는 외부로의 발산적 의식의 어떠한 이미지라기 보다는 자신을 지키기 위한 내부로의 응집의 의미를 지닌 이미지로 드러남을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

The main paradigm of research dealing with overseas Korean literature so far is that it has been conducted in accordance with the framework of 'national' or 'ethnicity', 'diaspora', and 'identity as a Korean'. As is well known, the diaspora mainly refers to decentralization, community, and group and is very strongly bound to one's home country or country. The diaspora refers to a state in which one must return to 'home'. Therefore, the concept of the diaspora has a strong aspect of otherizing the lives of the people currently residing in the country. Therefore, it is possible to commit the error of disregarding the subjectivity of those who migrated voluntarily and completely degenerating overseas literature into the surrounding literature centered on Korea-Seoul. On the other hand, in transnationalism, there is no disconnection from the mother country and is not bound by the place of the mother country. In other words, it maintains a parallel life in two or more countries. In other words, it is influenced by the place of residence and the mother country together. Therefore, 'transnational' can "express expectations for a part that is not satisfied in the existing 'diaspora' and 'multiculturalism'" and provides clues to read "objective situations or subjective perceptions that cannot be interpreted or predicted with the modern national recognition framework." For example, the transnational perspective is significant in that it can dismantle its national identity centered on a country, and that it can affirm the lives and will of voluntary migrants or look at them as they are. In the present era when the rigid boundaries of the nation-state are broken, and transnational movement and migration are becoming commonplace, the way to approach overseas Korean literature should also be expanded. It is unreasonable to try to divide overseas Korean literature with various conditions, contexts, forms, and origins into a single category called "Diaspora literature." This study attempted to examine the transnational characteristics of speakers and their meanings as one of the methods of reading Australian poetry. Its characteristics are as follows. First, it is the appropriation of space and transnational. In the work, the natural scenery and characters of the living space are depicted as romantic ideals. Although most of the Koreans in Australia were voluntary relocation subjects, they tend to have conflicts between their surroundings, reality, and ideals in the cultural hybrid after migration. To overcome this, a kind of 'territorialization' or 'exclusion of space' is made to make an insignificant "space" into a special "place." At this time, it can be seen that the unfamiliar space is described as a romantic or peaceful place, sometimes a place with excessive mystery. Second, it is the illusion of space and transnational. Romantic works often conceal labor reality or painful present conditions or spaces. However, the works examined in this study overcome these limitations. For example, it is depicted with an image that directly reveals the pain of reality hidden in an unusual and exotic space. Nevertheless, it contains an illusion, which can be read as a personal consciousness as a reality to form an identity. Finally, it is the place of expression of self-consciousness and the transnational. The speaker in the work dreams of a 'place' from the 'space' of pain to a new world. At this time, it can be seen that the 'place' is revealed as an image that has the meaning of internal cohesion to protect oneself rather than any image of divergent consciousness to the outside.
