연호 이주환의 시문학에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Poetic Literature of Yeonho(連湖) Lee ju-hwan(李柱煥))

초록

본고는 경상남도 거창에서 일제의 침탈에 殉節로 저항하여 당시 커다란 반향을 일으킨 連湖 李柱煥[1854∼1919]의 문학 세계를 분석한 것이다.
『연호유고』의 제일 앞에는 宋在晟의 「連湖遺稿序」가 있고 제일 뒤에는 연호의 從姪 李德基의 「連湖遺稿跋」이 있다. 『연호유고』의 내지에는 ‘連湖實記’로 표기되어 있다. 이 책은 크게 연호의 저작과 연호의 생애와 죽음에 대한 타인의 글로 이루어져 있는데, 후자는 부록으로 처리되어 있다. 연호의 저작은 10수의 시와 7편의 서간, 1편의 자서, 1편의 제문이 있으며, <雜著>에 「師門問答」과 「庚戌記事」가 들어 있다. 그러나 「경술기사」는 내용을 검토해 본 결과 연호의 작품이 아니므로 부록에 편입하는 것이 타당하다. 따라서 연호의 현전하는 저작은 모두 20편이다.
宋在晟이 쓴 「연호유고서」는 1948년에 지어졌고 『연호유고』가 1962년에 발간되었으니 준비 및 제작 기간이 무려 14년이 걸린 셈이다. 송재성은 연호의 작품은 문집으로 엮어 후대에까지 남길만한 가치를 가지고 있으니, 작품 자체만으로도 그의 사람됨을 알 수 있게 할 뿐 아니라, 명절과 烈의 실상이 있어 칭송하기에 충분하다고 하였다. 한편 「連湖遺稿跋」은 「연호유고서」보다 연호의 저작과 『연호유고』의 편찬 경위에 대한 기술이 다소 상세하다. 이 글에서는 연호가 시문 창작을 적게 한 것이 아니라 그의 글이 대부분 시의를 저촉하는 내용이기에 당시 사람들이 불에 태워버렸다고 하였다. 그리고 수습된 것이 겨우 열에 한둘 정도에 지나지 않는다고 하였으니, 『연호유고』에는 그의 작품 중 극히 일부가 겨우 수록되었다고 하겠다.
『연호유고』에 수록된 시는 모두 10수로 대단히 적지만 그나마 연호의 문학적 감성을 파악할 수 있다는 점에서 매우 다행스럽다 하겠다. 그는 도학의 연원과 계승을 소재로 삼아 우리나라의 문화와 역사의 정통성에 대한 자부심을 표출하였고, 자신의 거처와 환경을 소재로 삼아 그것에 삶의 지향과 의미를 투사하였다. 그리고 애도시에서는 애상의 정서를, 맹세시에는 결연한 의지를, 절명시에는 비장미를 녹여 넣었다. 그의 산문도 10편에 불과하지만 간결하면서도 전달하고자 하는 내용을 선명히 표현하였다. 또 유려하면서 수사적인 특성을 겸비하고 있기에 그의 시와 함께 一團의 문학 세계를 형성한다고 할 수 있다.
이주환의 문학 작품은 소모적 감정의 유로를 자제하되 소재에 적절한 문학적 정서를 표출함으로써 특유의 문학적 미감을 형성하였다. 또 현학적 전고와 난삽한 표현을 배제하고 선명한 문법과 효과적인 수사법을 구사함으로써 가독력과 說服力을 높였다. 이는 이주환이 속한 당대 기호학맥 사인들의 문학에서 공통적으로 보이는 특징이다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes the literary world of Yeonho(連湖) Lee ju-hwan(李柱煥)(1854～1919), who caused a great repercussion at the time by dying in defense of his chastity, resisting the Japanese imperialism in Geochang, Gyeongsangnamdo.
At the forefront of 『Yeonho-yugo(連湖遺稿)』, there is Song Jae-sung's 「Yeonhoyugoseo(連湖遺稿序)」, and at the back, there is 「Yeonhoyugoseobal(連湖遺稿跋)」 which was written by a male cousin's son Lee Deok-gi(李德基). It was written as ‘Yeonhosilgi(連湖實記)’ inside front cover of 『Yeonho-yugo(連湖遺稿)』. This book was largely composed of other people's writings about the literary works, the life and death of the Yeon-ho(連湖). And the latter was treated as an supplement. There were 10 poems, 7 letters, 1 author's preface, 1 funeral oration, and it contained 「Samun-mundab(師門問答)」 and 「Gyeongsul-gisa(庚戌記事)」 in <Miscellaneous writings(雜著)>. However, as a result of examining the contents of 「Gyeongsul-gisa(庚戌記事)」, it is reasonable to include it as an supplement since it was not a work of Yeon-ho. Therefore, his current works are all 20 pieces.
Song Jae-sung's 「Yeonhoyugoseo(連湖遺稿序)」 was written in 1948 and 『Yeonho-yugo(連湖遺稿)』 was published in 1962, so it took 14 years for preparation and production. Song Jae-sung said that the works of Yeon-ho were valuable enough to be left to next generations by making them into a collection, since, not only was the literary work itself worthy of being able to know his personality, but it was enough to praise it because of the fact of the integrity and the force. On the other hand, the 「Yeonhoyugoseobal(連湖遺稿跋)」 which was written by a male cousin's son Lee Deok-gi(李德基) was somewhat more detail than 「Yeonhoyugoseo(連湖遺稿序)」 about descriptions on the works of Yeon-ho and the compilation of 『Yeonho-yugo(連湖遺稿)』. In this article, Yeon-ho did not write the poetry less, but most of his writings were contrary to the meaning of the age, so the people at that time burned in the fire. And it is said that only about one or two in ten had been settled. In 『Yeonho-yugo(連湖遺稿)』, only a small part of his manuscripts were recorded.
The number of poems in 『Yeonho-yugo(連湖遺稿)』 is very small at 10, but it is very fortunate to be able to understand the literary sensitivity of Yeon-ho. He expressed his pride in the legitimacy of Korea's culture and history by using the origin and succession of moral philosophy as materials, and he projected the orientation and significance of life on his habitation and environment. He melted the emotions of mourning in mourning poetry, a determined willingness in his oath poetry, and a tragic beauty in death poetry. Although his prose is only ten, he expressed simple but clearly what he wanted to convey. In addition, because his prose had a flowing and rhetorical characteristic, it could be said that his prose formed a literary world with his poetry.
Lee ju-hwan's literary works created a unique literary aesthetic by expressing the appropriate literary sentiment in the material while refraining from the flow of consuming emotion. In addition, he avoided pedantic authentic precedents and difficulty expressions, and improved readability and persuasive power by using clear grammar and effective rhetoric. This was a common feature in the literature of Kiho School to which Lee ju-hwan belongs.
