아프로시압 궁전벽화 디지털 복원 모사 (The Digital Restoration Copy of the Afrosiab Palatial Mural)

초록

우즈베키스탄 사마르칸트 아프로시압 언덕에는 고대 실크로드의 문화와 역사를 알려주는 벽화가 전해지고 있다. 1965년 도로 공사 중 우연히 발견된 벽화는 약 11㎡ 방의 4벽면에 그려져 있다. 방에 들어서서 정면에 보이는 서벽에는 각 국의 사절과 호위 무사 등을 비롯하여 벽화의 내용을 설명하는 문자가 쓰여져 있다. 남벽에는 사당으로 보이는 건물과 이를 향하는 행렬이 그려져 있으며, 북벽에는 중국식 복장을 한 여인들이 뱃놀이하는 장면, 남자들의 사냥 장면이 그려져 있다. 동벽은 훼손이 가장 심한 부분으로 정확한 내용은 파악하기 어렵지만 활을 쏘는 어린아이, 물결 문양 등이 남아 있다.
이 벽화는 사마르칸트 바르흐만왕 시기인 7세기 중엽의 궁중 행사를 그린 것으로 추정되며 서부토카리안 지역의 차가니안(Chagania), 서역의 고창(高昌) 혹은 중국, 인도 및 한국의 사절단이 온 것을 맞이하는 것으로 해석된다.
발굴 시 이미 벽의 상부와 천정은 무너졌고 지면에서 약 2m 정도까지만 벽화가 남아 있었는데, 현재는 벽화의 실물을 아프로시압 박물관으로 옮겨 전시하고 있다.
대한민국 동북아역사재단은 2013년부터 2015년까지 우즈베키스탄 사마르칸트 아프로시압 박물관과 공동으로 궁전벽화에 대한 디지털복원 사업 및 보호 조치를 취하였다. 그 결과로서 벽화 전체에 대한 2D 모사도 제작, 3D 다국어 영상 제작 및 아프로시압 박물관 영상실 설치 운용, 전시실 내 벽화 보호 기자재 설치, 서벽 사절도와 명문 인물 부분에 대한 실벽 모사도 제작 및 대한민국 국립중앙박물관 전시 등의 적지 않은 성과를 거두었다.
본 논문은 아프로시압 궁전 벽화의 2D․3D 복원을 중심으로 그 과정과 결과물을 소개한 것이다. 동북아역사재단과 우즈베키스탄 국립 사마르칸트 종합 역사건축예술 박물관이 공동 작업하여 얻은 이 결과물들이 인류 공동의 문화유산으로서 보호되고 동서 문명을 연결하고 소통했던 실크로드 역사문화 연구에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

A mural was unearthed by chance during a road construction project in 1965 on Afrosiab Hill in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, which depicts the culture and history of the civilization of Sogdia, which played a crucial role in the development of the ancient Silk Road. Located in Room 1, Section 23 of the site, it is an important record of the political situation of the 7th century East Asia.
On the four walls of the 11 m2 room, the painting portrays the royal parade of Varkhuman; ambassadors from a number of countries; people hunting and boating, and engaged in archery on the bank of a river; and a variety of fish. At the time of the discovery of the mural, the upper parts of the walls as well as the ceiling had collapsed, and only the lowest part of the walls up to the height of roughly two meters survived. The painting is currently on display at the Afrosiab Museum.
The mural has been seriously damaged. Although a copy was previously produced, it neither includes precise details nor represents the whole of the original and thus fails to adequately convey the original's scope. Since the original's environment is less than optimal and efforts at maintenance are likewise imperfect, the continual deterioration of the painting is almost inevitable despite the efforts of the Uzbek government and relevant international organizations.
Korea’s Northeast Asian History Foundation visited the Afrosiab Museum during a field trip in order to investigate the historic remains and in particular aspects which relate to the Korean historical involvement in the Silk Road. The trip occurred in late November and early December 2012, when Uzbekistan was requesting conservation assistance via its embassies in other countries. Therefore, the investigation team and the Uzbek government began to work on a conservation project. The Foundation decided to take an active part for it had gained experience in digital restoration since its 2007 project on Koguryo murals in North Korea, and due to the Koreans' keen interest in the men with bird-feathered hats, or Jowoo-Guan, depicted in the painting.
In July 2013, Hak-joon Kim, the President of the Northeast Asian History Foundation, and Boboyorov Mahmud, the General Director of the State Museum of Culture History of Uzbekistan signed an agreement on the establishment of a joint project for the restoration and conservation of the mural painting.
The 2013-15 project resulted in significant accomplishments, including the production of a 2D digital restoration copy of the entire mural; the production of a 3D digital video clip with subtitles in various languages, and the establishment and operation of a viewing room for screenings; the installation of equipment for the conservation of the mural in the exhibition room; the production of a restoration replica of parts of the western wall that depicts the envoys as well as other men on whose clothes Sogdian letters are engraved, and its exhibition at the National Museum of Korea.
This paper aims to introduce the processes engaged in and outcomes achieved by the project for the digital restoration of the Afrosiab palatial mural and the production of relevant video materials.
