초록

왜 플라톤인가? 왜 플라톤의 민주주의 비판이 오늘날 우리에게 흥미로운가? 근․현대 미학 및 현대 정치철학은 플라톤의 테아트로크라시 비판을 거듭 소환해왔으며, 그와 착종을 일으키는 정치적인 것은 현대 민주주의 위기론의 서양 정신사적 원천이다. 이 글은 테아트로크라시와 민주주의와 관련된 플라톤의 언술을 철학적 ‘비판 유형’으로 접근하되, 현대의 시의성 속에서 흥미로울 수 있는 지점들을 재구성하고, 그것을 민주주의 이념의 전망 속에서 재조명해보려는 시도이다. 이때 다음과 같은 사유 모티브가 이론적 분석 및 재조명의 중심을 이룰 것이다.
첫째, 플라톤의 모델에서는 서로 다른 통치형태들의 분석이 현대적 의미로 표현하자면 주체화형식들의 연구와 결부되어있다. 말하자면 통치와 자치(自治), 곧 자기통제 간의 상호연관성을 엿볼 수 있는 단초가 제공되고 있는데, 다름 아닌 ‘연극적인 것’의 민주주의 문화가 바로 그것이다. 둘째, 통치와 자기통제의 연관성이 현대에 이르러 플라톤이 상정한 것처럼 단순한 반사거울관계가 아니라 보다 복합적인 양상을 띨 수밖에 없다면, 민주주의 문화와 관련해 이 연관성을 매개할 제3의 범주는 ‘자유의 가치’로 규정될 수 있다. 플라톤의 모델에서 자유는 민주주의 문화가 불러일으킨다는 가상의 심미화를 공격함으로써 ‘타락’ 혹은 ‘퇴폐’의 성격으로 규정된다. 셋째, 플라톤의 모델에서 자유의 문제가 부정적 성격을 띰에도 불구하고 원칙적으로는 정치적인 것과 맞물린 문화의 심미성과 결부된 것이라면, 자유로운 주체에 대한 고민은 정치적 제도와 구조적 절차 속에서 실현될 범주에 국한하기보다는, 오히려 미학 혹은 예술비판의 맥락 속에서 자유 문화의 표현으로 적극 해석될 필요가 있으며, 이 문화적 범주는 단연 정치적인 의미를 띨 뿐만 아니라, 주체의 삶의 양식 전체(삶의 기예, 생활양식 등)와 관련된다.

영어초록

Why Plato? Why is Plato’s criticism on democracy of interest to us today? The modern aesthetics, as well as contemporary political philosophers, have repeated Plato’s criticism on theatrocracy, and the political entanglements that come with it constitute a source for the western intellectual history of contemporary democracy crisis discourse. This writing represents an attempt to highlight possible points of interest when the timeliness of contemporary times are reorganized, and reilluminated within the prospect of the democratic idea; although Plato’s discourse related to the theatrocracy and democracy is approached as a philosophical ‘criticism type’. At this time, the following motives will be the center of theoretical analysis and reillumination.
First, in Plato’s model, the analyses of mutually different ruling forms are connected to the studies on subjectivation if expressed in the modern sense. As it were, clues are being provided which allow a peek into the mutual connection between ruling and autocracy, or self-control, which itself is nothing but the democratic culture of ‘the theatrical’.
Secondly, if the connection between ruling and self-control require a more combined mode in modern times rather than the reflecting mirror relationship as presented by Plato, the third category to mediate this connection in relation to democracy culture can be defined as the ‘value of freedom’. In Plato’s model, freedom is defined with the characteristic of ‘fall’ or ‘decadence’ by attacking the virtual aestheticization that is said to be aroused by democratic culture.
Thirdly, suppose that the issue of freedom is connected in principle to the aesthetic impression of culture engaged with politics, despite the fact that the issue has a negative characteristic in the Plato’s model. Then the agony about a free principal agent needs to be actively interpreted as the expression of freedom culture in the context of aesthetics or art criticism rather than being limited only to the category realized in the political system and structural procedure. Definitely, this cultural category not only has a political meaning, but also is related to the whole mode of life of the principal agent (arts of life, life style, etc.).
