초록

이 논문은 최하림 시인의 후기시에 해당하는 5~7시집과 시집 미수록 근작 시를 중심으로 한 공간의식 연구이다.
최하림의 시세계를 조망하는 데 있어 그의 존재론적 종착지라고 할 수 있는 ‘풍경’을 바라보는 태도를 분석하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 풍경에 도달하기 위한 여정으로써의 사유 체계는 주된 상관물인 집․창문․바람의 구조적 관계를 통해 명확히 드러난다. 본고는 풍경과 그 안의 사물을 다루는 시적 어조와 태도를 분석함으로써 집․창문․바람에 나타난 공간적 상징체계의 의미를 도출하고 시에 나타난 미학적 특징과 의미를 밝히고자 했다.
‘집’은 현재적 공간이며, ‘집 밖’은 내면 공간, ‘바람’은 현재적 공간과 내면 공간 사이를 오가는 매개체이다. 이때, ‘집’과 ‘집 밖’의 경계에 놓인 ‘창문’은 시적화자의 존재론적 위치를 의미한다. 사색하는 공간이며 물음의 출발점인 ‘집’은 일상보다 더 내밀한 공간이자 자기반성의 기저이다. 역사의 흐름에 적극 동참하지 못한 한계와 반성으로 인한 존재론적 고민의 장소이다. 또한 집은 세상과의 단절을 의미하는 공간이기도 하다.
‘창문’은 시인과 세상과의 경계지점이다. ‘창문’은 거울과 달리 시인의 얼굴과 풍경을 동시에 바라보게 하므로 세상을 객관화해 바라볼 수 있는 이중 시선으로 작용한다. 나와 타자, 우리를 동시에 바라보며 존재론적 사유를 하는 독특한 미학적 시선이다.
‘바람’은 집의 안과 바깥을 오가며 창의 경계를 넘나드는 대상이다. 바람의 운동성은 불안, 즉 내면의 흔들림으로 작용하며 풍경을 동적으로 만드는 요소이다. 흔들리는 풍경은 기억 속의 시․공간을 환기시키는 역할을 한다. 사회적 약자와 역사에 희생된 이들을 일련의 일상적 풍경으로 묘사하는 것은 시․공간을 무화시키며 이렇게 합일된 풍경은 ‘개인’이 아닌 ‘우리’의 시선을 회복하기 위한 모색임과 동시에 개인의 한계를 극복하고자 하는 노력의 일환이다.
최하림의 시세계는 순수와 참여의 경계에 위치하여 어느 한 쪽으로 집중되지 않는다. 그러한 이유로 기존의 논의에서도 역사적 삶 전반을 시와 견주어 평하다보니 시세계 전반을 형이상학적인 존재론적 풍경의 이미지로 바라볼 뿐 시적 특질은 잘 드러내지 못했다. 인상비평이나 단평에 의존한 경우가 많은 이유도 그러하다. 본고에서 논의한 최하림의 ‘창 들여다보기’는 풍경과 내면을 동시에 바라보게 하는 시적 방법론으로써 독특한 언어의 자의식을 드러내는 시적 사유공간을 창출했다. 그는 창 너머 시․공간의 총체적 경험을 들여다보는 행위를 통해 시와 삶, 역사성에 대한 응전은 물론 존재론적 사유와 시대적 반성을 지속해왔다. 본고는 ‘집․창문․바람’의 공간 의식 분석을 통해 시적 특질을 세분화하여 밝혔으며, 이는 시인의 영면 이후 미적 세계를 본격적으로 조망해보고자 하는 첫 시도로써 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This thesis examines the space consciousness of the poet Ha-rim Choi；the focus is on the fifth through seventh anthologies of his poetry (i.e., his later poems and recent poems not yet published). When considering Ha-rim Choi’s poetic world, it is very important to analyze the manner in which he looks at the “scenery,” or his ontological destination. The thinking that a road is needed to reach the scenery comes into view clearly through the structural relations of a house, window, and the wind-the main correlatives. By analyzing the poetic tone and manner in which the scenery and objects in it are treated, this thesis aims to deduce the meaning of the symbolic spatial system in which a house, window, and wind represent and reveal the aesthetic features and meaning in Choi’s poems.
The “house” is the present space, and “outside the house” is the inner space. “Wind” is a medium for coming in and out of the present space and inner space. Here, a window on the border between the house and outside the house represents the ontological position of a poetic narrator. The house is the space for contemplation and the starting point of questioning；it is a more secretive space than daily lives and the medium of self-reflection. It is the place for ontological worry caused by the limitations and reflections resulting from not taking an active part in the stream of history. A house is the space representing disconnection from the world.
A window is a boundary between the poet and the world. It makes us look at the face of the poet and scenery at the same time, unlike looking into a mirror. It presents a dual viewpoint and enables us to view the world objectively. It is a unique aesthetic and simultaneous view of me, others, and us, presenting the opportunity to think ontologically.
Wind comes in and out of the house and crosses the boundary of the window. The motion of wind represents anxiety-shaking on the inside-and it is the feature that makes the scenery dynamic. The swaying scenery plays the role of arousing memories of time and space. Describing vulnerable members of society and their sacrifices in history as a series depicting everyday scenery assimilates time and space. Thus, this unified scenery reflects the struggle to regain the view of “we.” It is a part of the effort to overcome the limitations of individuals.
Ha-rim Choi’s poetic world borders both innocence and participation, and it does not lean to either side. Thus, history has been examined according to his poems in conventional discussions. Typically, the world of poetry has been viewed only as metaphysical and ontological scenery, and poetic characteristics have not been expressed well. Thus, many discussions depend on impressionist criticism or brief commentaries. Ha-rim Choi’s “Looking in the Window,” discussed in this thesis as poetic methodology that makes us look at the scenery and the inner side simultaneously, creates a space for poetic thoughts that expose self-consciousness through a unique language. Through the action of holistically viewing time and space beyond the window, Choi has continued to think ontologically and reflect on the times. Additionally, he resists the conventional approach toward poetry, life, and historicity. This thesis has segmented and established the poetic traits through the analysis of spatial consciousness；after the death of the poet, it has significance as his first attempt to examine his aesthetic world in earnest.
