『靑春』 소재 한시 연구 (A Study of Classical Chinese Poetry in Ch'ŏngch'un)

초록

이 논문은 고전문학과 현대문학 연구가 공통적으로 관심을 보이지 않았던 『靑春』 소재 한시의 특성과 그 의미를 탐구하였다. 이를 통해, 20세기에 ‘근대시’를 추구했던 인물들이 기존 한문맥의 전고를 활용하면서도, 근대적 문물을 묘사하고자 했으며, 당대 현실을 비판하기 위한 유용한 매개로서 한시를 활용했음을 논의했다. 즉, ‘근대시’란 무엇인가를 묻기 위해서는 근대에 쓰인 국문시, 한시, 그리고 이들이 상호작용을 하고 있었던 맥락을 이해할 필요가 있다. 이러한 중층성을 온전히 드러낼 때만이, ‘서구적 근대성’을 잣대로 이에서 벗어나는 것은 주목하지 않거나, 언어 민족주의적 관점에서 조선어만을 강조하는 편향된 시각으로 한국 근대시사를 왜곡하는 것을 지양할 수 있다.
이를 위해 먼저 이 글은 『청춘』 소재 한시가 최남선이 썼을 가능성이 매우 높다는 것을 논의했다. 우선 『청춘』에서 저자 표기가 되어 있지 않은 작품은 최남선의 것으로 추정할 수 있다. 또한 최남선이 한시를 짓고 싶은 열망을 고백하고 『少年』에 한시를 게재한 바 있으며, 백두산과 단군을 연결하며 찬양하는 것, 신문관이나 조선광문회와 같이 자신이 주재했던 단체와 관련된 한시를 지은 것, 그리고 최남선이 지은 산문들과 발상과 표현을 같이 하는 한시들은, 『청춘』 소재 한시가 최남선의 작품임을 방증한다.
『청춘』 소재 한시들은 거의 모든 시가 한문맥의 전고를 적극적으로 활용하였다. 전고는 선인들과 공명하면서 시의 의미를 풍성하게 하고 독자들의 공감 폭을 확장했던 기법이다. 이렇게 전고로 포착되는 시상을 한시로 썼다는 것은 한시적 감수성을 드러낸다. 이에 그치지 않고, 당대의 새로운 근대적 문물을 한시로 포착하려는 노력도 보인다. 이는 한시가 박제된 전통이 아니라 당대 현실을 포착할 수 있는 매체라고 인식했기 때문이다. 또, 엄혹한 검열 환경 속에서 당대 현실을 동물을 소재로 한 한시를 통해 우회적으로 비판한다. 특히 『청춘』의 국문시와 비교해봤을 때 이러한 한시들의 우회적 비판이 두드러지는데, 이는 한시라는 형식이 검열을 피하기 적절하게, 더 함축적이고 이해하기 어렵기 때문일 것이다.
한국문학사는 한문 문학과 국문 문학의 상호교섭으로 이루어졌고, 근대라는 시기도 예외는 아니다. 이 글이 『청춘』에 대한 연구를 통해 밝힌 것처럼, 한시는 분명 나름의 역할을 담당하고 있었고, ‘근대’의 선구적인 시인인 최남선은 그 역할을 적절하게 활용하며 ‘근대문학’을 이루어나갔다.

영어초록

This paper explored the characteristics and significance of the Classical Chinese poetry of Ch'ŏngch'un(靑春), in which classical literary and modern literary studies were not interested in common. Through this, it was discussed that poets who pursued 'modern poetry' in the 20th century while using an authentic precedent(典故) of context in Classical Chinese letters(漢文脈) tried to portray the modern artifacts and to criticize the contemporary reality while using the Classical Chinese poetry as a medium. In other words, in order to ask what is 'modern poetry', it is necessary to understand the contemporary Korean poetry, Classical Chinese poetry, and the context in which they interacted. Only when it reveals such multilayer, we can examine the history of Korean modern poetry without distorting the Korean poetry with a biased view of emphasizing only vernacular Korean language or standards of 'Western modernity'.
To this end, this paper first discussed the possibility that Chʻoe Nam-sŏn is the author of Classical Chineses poetry in Ch'ŏngch'un. First of all, all the articles in Ch'ŏngch'un without author’s name can be assumed to be Chʻoe Nam-sŏn’s. In addition, Chʻoe Nam-sŏn has confessed his desire to write a Classical Chinese poetry, and published a Classical Chinese poetry in Sonyŏn(少年). Also praise of Paektusan(白頭山) and Tanʾgun(檀君), poetry about groups he had participated(新文館, 朝鮮廣文會), and the poetry which shares the ideas and expressions with the prose written by Chʻoe Nam-sŏn confirms that the Classical Chinese poetries of Ch'ŏngch'un are the works of Chʻoe Nam-sŏn.
Classical Chinese poetries of Ch'ŏngch'un actively utilized authentic precedents of context in Classical Chinese letters. It is a technique that enriches the meaning of poetry and enlarges the sympathy of readers by resonating with the past poets. The fact that the idea of poetry which was captured by authentic precedents implies Classical Chinese poetry sensibility. In addition to this, efforts are also being made to capture the new modern artifacts of the time. This is because Classical Chinese poetry was not a stuffed tradition but a medium to capture the reality of the time. Also severe censorship was bypassed through figurative Classical Chinese poetry using animals to criticise contemporary reality. Especially, when compared with the Korean poetry of Ch'ŏngch'un, the Classical Chinese poetry’s criticism is remarkable. This criticism of Classical Chinese poetry was possible because it is more implicit and difficult to understand.
The history of Korean literature consists of mutual negotiation between Chinese literature and Korean literature, and the period of modernity was no exception. As this paper reveals through the study of Ch'ŏngch'un, Classical Chinese poetry certainly played its role, and Chʻoe Nam-sŏn, a pioneer poet of 'modernity', made use of its role to make 'modern literature'.
