正祖의 聯句詩 창작과 그 의미－『弘齋全書』에 수록된 작품을 중심으로－ (Creation Background and Meaning of King Jongjo(正祖)'s Yeongusi(聯句詩))

초록

본고는 조선후기 문예군주로 칭해졌던 正祖가 그의 신하들과 창작한 聯句詩를 대상으로, 그 문학적 특징과 연구시 창작이 지니는 정치･사회･문화적 의미를 찾는 데에 연구 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 우선 『홍재전서』에 수록된 17제 18수의 연구시 가운데 창작의 시･공간적인 배경 및 작품 내용을 중심으로 크게 경치감상, 왕릉참배, 文武臣의 試取, 서적 간행 등을 기념하기 위해 지어진 작품을 선별한 뒤, 해당 작품에 대한 보다 직접적이면서 구체적인 창작배경을 살펴보기 위해 實錄을 비롯한 『承政院日記』･『日省錄』등 관련 史料를 참고하여 당시 정조가 제신들과 연구시를 지었던 상황을 확인하였다. 정조는 따스한 봄날의 경치에 감발되어 閣臣 및 그들의 家人을 조정으로 초청하여 함께 연구를 짓는가 하면, 光陵을 참배하고 돌아오는 길에 대신 및 각신들에게 연구를 명하였고, 抄啓文臣의 親試와 武臣의 試射 과정에서 그들과 연구를 짓는가하면, 또 『인서록』 간행을 기념하는 잔치에 모인 100여명의 신하들과 거대 장편의 연구시를 지어 이 날의 경사를 기록하기도 했다. 정조의 제신들과의 잦은 연구는 詩軸 혹은 규장각 현판으로 제작되어 훗날 각신들에게 경계와 모범을 보이기도 하는 등 정조는 詩作을 일종의 정치술로 이용하여 신하의 감정을 살피고 그들과 생각을 교류함과 동시에 신하의 文才를 확인하고 자신의 우월한 詩才를 우회적으로 드러내는 방편으로 삼기도 했다.
정조와 제신간에 이루어진 연구시는 여타 연구시와 비교하여 그 창작과정을 여실히 보여주고 있다는 점에서 특기할 만 하다. 주인격인 정조가 국왕의 신분이었던 만큼 그의 문집인 『홍재전서』 외에 實錄･『承政院日記』･『日省錄』 등 다양한 史料를 통해 당시 연구시가 창작되었던 구체적인 상황을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 그의 대부분 연구시는 100구 이상의 거대 장편으로 이루어져 다양한 分聯방식을 구사하였다. 그중에서도 대개 정조가 첫 구와 마지막 구를 먼저 완성한 뒤 제신들이 그 안을 채우거나, 혹은 정조가 첫 구를 이루면 그 뒤는 모두 제신들이 이어나가는 방식이 가장 많이 활용되었다. 정조의 연구시는 즉석에서 이루어졌기 때문에 신하 입장에서는 자신의 민첩한 詩才와 순간적인 문학적 機智를 발현하는 데 제격이었다. 작품의 문학적 완성도를 차치하고서라도 지어놓은 싯구에다가 맥락과 詩想을 연결시켜 싯구를 이어나가는 詩作방식은 참여원들의 사고와 筆力이 걸맞을 때라야 매끄럽게 연결될 수 있기 때문이었다.
이러한 정조의 군신간 연구시 창작은 사회･문화･정치적으로 다양한 의미를 지니고 있다. 먼저 조선후기 군신간의 지적 교류의 수단으로 연구시가 활용되었다는 점을 꼽을 수 있다. 연구시의 작품성은 다소 떨어질지라도 신하 개인의 생각을 한 구 혹은 두 구에 압축시킴으로써 군신 상하간의 정을 통하고 자신의 의견을 개진하는 데 적극 활용하였다. 또한 그의 연구시는 詩로 쓴 공적 기록물로써의 의미를 지닌다. 정조는 국가의 비교적 큰 행사에서 제신들에게 연구를 명하여 기쁜 이 날을 기념하고 훗날 이 날을 기억하기 위해 연구시로써 기록을 남기도록 하였다. 수창에 참여한 인물의 관직명과 성명을 싯구 아래 함께 작성토록 하여 당시 행사의 규모와 참여인원, 그리고 행사의 개최목적을 짐작할 수 있어 정조의 연구시는 일종의 역사적 기록물로써의 성격을 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 그리고 정조는 몇몇의 특정 인물을 연구시 창작에 반복적으로 참여시켰는데, 이를 통해 정조는 당대의 필수적인 문학행위로써 자신의 정치적 행위를 합리화시키고 자신의 세력을 확충시켰던 사실을 엿볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to identify the characteristics of Yeongusi(聯句詩: a poem with parallelism) created by King Jongjo who was called as “literary monarch” in the late Choson Dynasty and his subjects and the political, social, and cultural meaning of Yeongusi. To this end, this study first selects the four poems designed to commemorate specifically, appreciation of landscape, visiting of royal tomb, examination and recruitment of civil magistrates and military officers, and publication of books from the 18 poems listed in 『HongJaeJeonSeo』 depending on spatiotemporal background and content of a poem. After then, to look at more direct and specific background of creation of the selected poems, this study identifies the circumstances that King Jongjo created Yeongusi with his subjects with reference to historical sources such as 『Seungjeongwonilgi』 and 『Ilseongnok(Records of Daily Reflections)』 as well as Shilu(Veritable Records). Jongjo sometimes invited government officials of Kyujanggak and his family members to royal court and created Yeongusi with them when he was fascinated by a warm spring day and other times when taking a short rest on his way back to royal court after visiting Gwangneung Royal Tomb of King Sejo, presented the first and last phrase of a poem that he conceived and ordered his ministers and governmental officials of Kyujanggak to study it. His subjects created Yeongusi in Qinshi (examination in the presence of a king) or demonstrative archery, or created a full-length Yeongusi in the celebration of 『Inseorok』 with his more than 100 subjects to record the happy occasion to celebrate.
Yeongusi created between King Jongjo and his subjects is distinct from the other Yeongusi in that it reveal its creation process. As Jongjo who deserved to be the main creator of Yeongusi was the king of a country, his collection of works like HongJaeJeonSeo, Shilu, 『Seungjeongwonilgi』, 『Ilseongnok』, many other historical sources that revealed the then- situations from which the specific circumstances of Yeongusi can be discovered. In addition, most of his Yeongusi are full-length poems with more than 100 phrases, which seems to enable various ways of separating verses. Furthermore, Jongjo's Yeongusi was spontaneous and so good for his subjects to show their poetic genius and express their literary wits. Setting aside the degree of completion, adding one's own contexts and poetical ideas to the poetic phrases already created can lead to smooth connection of such phrases only if participating poets have enough ideas and forces of written style correspondingly.
Such a creation of Jongjo's Yeongusi between he and his subjects implies various social, cultural, and political meanings. First, Yeongusi was used as a means to exchange knowledge between king and subject in the late Chosun Dynasty. Although the literary value of Yeongusi might be rather low, such a form of compressing individual subjects' thoughts into one or two phrase(s) was used positively to become intimate with king and express their opinions. Furthermore, his Yeongusi is significant in that it is an official record in the form of poem. Jongjo ordered his subjects to create Yeongusi in a relatively big event in the country to commemorate the happy day and commanded recording it in the form of Yeongusi to remember the day later. Jongjo also had some figures participate in creating Yeongusi in a repeated way. By doing so, Jongjo made his political act rationalized as an essential literary activity of his time to expand his force. So Yeongusi is a good basis for understanding the social situation at the time of Jongjo.
