상주 용흥사 목조아미타삼존좌상의 조각승과 제작 시기 추정 (Estimation of the Sculptor and Creation period of the Wooden Seated Amitabha Triad at Yongheungsa Temple in Sangju)

초록

상주 용흥사 목조아미타삼존좌상은 조성 발원문이 발견되지 않아 정확한 조성 연도는 확정할 수없지만, 양식 특징과 봉안처인 극락전이 1647년에 건립된 사실 등을 종합해 보면 이 불상들은 조각승 승일(勝一, 勝日)에 의해 1650년대에 조성된 것으로 추정된다.
용흥사 목조아미타삼존좌상은 1651년에 조성된 봉은사 목조약사･아미타좌상과 가장 유사한 양식 특징을 갖고 있다. 그러나 각진 정방형의 얼굴을 한 봉은사 불상들에 비해 상호가 좀더 길어졌고, 턱선들이 부드럽게 처리된 점에서는 차이가 있다. 용흥사 목조아미타삼존좌상은 승일이 제작한불상에 나타나는 공통된 특징을 갖고 있다. 즉 무릎 위에 낮게 둔 두 손, 두 다리 사이의 폭이 넓은‘八’자형 주름, 두 무릎쪽으로 새겨진 2줄의 양각선(陽刻線), 종아리의 대칭적인 타원형 주름, 귀 삼각와(三角窩) 상하의 ‘y’자 형 주름 표현이 그것이다.
또한 조각승 승일이 1665년에 조성한 용흥사 목조지장보살좌상(현 대구 서봉사 소재)은 아미타삼존상에 비해 어깨가 좁아졌고, 오른쪽 어깨의 대의(大衣) 주름과 왼쪽 손목을 흘러내려 왼쪽 무릎위에 표현된 끝이 뾰족한 나뭇잎 모양의 옷주름도 간략화되어 아미타삼존좌상의 제작 시기가 선행되었음을 알려준다.
본 연구에서는 용흥사 목조아미타삼존좌상이 조각승 승일에 의해 봉은사 목조약사･아미타불상(1651년)의 조성 전후 시기에 제작되었고, 김룡사 목조석가여래삼불좌상(1658년)과 용흥사 목조지장보살좌상(1665년) 보다는 이른 시기에 제작된 것으로 추정했다.

영어초록

The exact date of creation of the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad Statues of Yongheungsa Temple in Sangju cannot be determined because no records on their creation have been found. However, considering the style characteristics and the fact that the Geungnakjeon Hall, where they are enshirined, was built in 1647, it is estimated that these statues were created by the sculptor monk Seungil (勝一, 勝日) in the 1650s.
The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad Statues at Yongheungsa Temple have the most s imilar s tyle c h aracteristics to t h e Wooden Seated Bh aisajyaguru (Healing Buddh a) and Amitabha Buddha Statues at Bongeunsa Temple, which were created in 1651.
However, they differ in that the faces are slightly longer and the jawlines are softer compared to the square-shaped faces of the Buddha statues of Bongeunsa Temple.
The Yongheungsa Amitabha Buddha Triad Statues share common characteristics with the statues created by Seungil. That is, the two hands placed low on the knees, the wide ‘八’ shaped wrinkle between the two legs, the two lines carved in relief towards the two knees, the symmetrical oval wrinkles on the calves, and the ‘Y’ shaped wrinkles above and below the triangular fossa of the upper ears.
In addition, the Wooden Seated Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Statue of Yongheungsa Temple (currently enshrined at Seobongsa Temple in Daegu) created by the sculptor monk Seungil in 1665 has narrower shoulders than the Amitabha Buddha Triad. The folds of the clothes on the right shoulder and the pointed leaf-shaped folds f lowing down from the left wrist and expressed above the left knee are also simplified, indicating that the wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad Statues were created earlier.
This study suggests that the Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha Triad Statues at Yongheungsa Temple were created by the sculptor monk Seungil around the time of the Wooden Seated Bhaisajyaguru (Healing Buddha) and Amitabha Buddha Statues at Bongeunsa Temple (1651), and they were made ealier than the Wooden Seated Sh akyamuni B uddh a Triad at G imryongsa Temple ( 1658) a nd t h e Wooden K sitigarbh a Bodhisattva Statue of Yongheungsa Temple (1665).
