초록

This paper is intended as an investigation of how the Orestes and Electra myth in Aeschylus’ Choephoroi was received and transformed in Sophocles’ Electra and Euripides’ Electra. This investigation deals mainly with the comparison and analysis of the plot structures of the 3 tragedies which follow a similar story pattern: Orestes’ arrival—discovery between him and Electra - their revenge against Aigisthos and Klytaemnestra—and its consequence. A careful observer, however, will see how differently Sophocles and Euripides refine and modify Aeschylus' plot for the appropriation of the Orestes and Electra myth. Euripides introduces double reversals to highlight the ambivalence of revenge, portrays Electra's irrational vengeful will, and casts doubt on Apollo's oracle. In reaction to the Euripides' version of the Orestes and Electra myth, Sophocles does not focus on the morally repugnant matricide and the problematic oracle of Apollo. Instead, the dramatist presents the double reversals closely linked to Electra's discovery, thus emphasizing her reversal of fortune and displaying her heroism. Therefore, in the reception and transformation of the Orestes and Electra myth we can see a stark contrast between Euripides' realism and Sophokles' idealism.
