플라톤과 에바그리우스의 죽음에의 훈련과 아나코레시스 (Training for Death and Anachoresis in the Philosophy of Plato and Evagrius)

초록

고대 그리스의 플라톤의 죽음에의 훈련은 일종의 영혼 훈련이었다. 그것은 영혼으로부터 신체와 그와 관련된 것들을 가능한 분리시키려는 훈련이다. 죽음에의 훈련을 통해 영혼은 정화되어 진리를 인식할 수 있으며 신들의 세계로 돌아갈 수 있다. 헬레니즘 철학에서 죽음에의 훈련은 영혼과 신체의 분리라는 의미보다는 ‘죽음에 대한 성찰’의 의미로 사용되는데 죽음에 대한 올바른 판단의 획득과 죽음이라는 한계상황에 대한 인식을 중시한다. 나아가 플라톤의 죽음에의 훈련과 비교하자면 초기 사막교부들의 죽음에의 훈련은 다음과 같은 특징을 보인다. 첫째, 플라톤과 달리 죽음에의 훈련에서 ‘죽음’의 의미를 형이상학적으로 보지 않고 물리적인 의미로 생각하였다. 그래서 헬레니즘 철학과 유사하게 ‘죽음’ 자체에 대한 성찰을 통해 죽음의 한계상황을 인식하여 영적 훈련을 하는데 목적이 있었다. 둘째, 플라톤의 죽음에의 훈련에 비해 금욕적인 특징이 매우 강화된 것으로 보인다. 특히 에바그리우스는 죽음에의 훈련에서 신체의 ‘분리’choresis를 이중적 의미로 사용한 것으로 보인다. 첫째, 플라톤의 죽음에의 훈련과 같이 그것은 형이상학적으로 영혼과 신체의 분리, 특히 정념과 욕망으로부터의 분리anachoresis를 의미한다. 둘째는 초기 사막교부들의 독특한 삶의 방식과 연관되는데, 죽음에의 훈련을 세상과의 분리anachoresis라는 의미로도 사용한다. 특히 에바그리우스의 죽음에의 훈련은 플라톤과 헬레니즘 철학의 두 가지 특징들을 모두 가지고 있다. 즉 에바그리우스는 플라톤과 같이 영혼과 신체의 분리로서의 죽음에의 훈련에 대해 설명하면서도, 헬레니즘 철학과 같이 죽음에 대한 성찰로서의 죽음에의 훈련에 대해서도 설명하고 있다. 에바그리우스는 이러한 죽음에의 훈련은 일회적이 아니라 반복적이고 습관화된 영적 훈련을 통해 완성된다고 한다.

영어초록

Plato's training for death was a kind of soul training in ancient Greece. It is a training to separate the body and its related things from the soul as much as possible. Through training in death, the soul is purified, able to recognize the truth, and return to the world of the gods. In Hellenistic philosophy, training in death is used in the sense of ‘meditation on death’, rather than in the sense of separation of the soul and body, and emphasizes the acquisition of correct judgment about death and awareness of the critical situation of death. Furthermore, compared to Plato's training for death, the training for death of the early Desert Fathers shows the following characteristics. First, unlike Plato, in training for death, the meaning of ‘death’ was not viewed metaphysically but rather in a physical sense. Therefore, similar to Hellenistic philosophy, the purpose was to provide spiritual training by recognizing the limitations of death through meditation on ‘death’ itself. Second, compared to Plato's training in death, ascetic characteristics appear to have been greatly strengthened. In particular, Evagrius appears to have used the ‘separation’ of the body in his training for death with a double meaning. First, like Plato's definition, it means metaphysical or nonphysical separation of soul and body, anachoresis, especially separation from passions and desires. Second, it is related to the unique way of life of the early Desert Fathers, and the training for death is also used in the sense of anachoresis, separation from the world. In particular, Evagrius' training for death has the characteristics of both Platonic and Hellenistic philosophy. In other words, Evagrius, like Plato, explains training for death as the separation of the soul and body, but also explains the training for death as meditation on death, like Hellenistic philosophy. Evagrius says that this training for death is not a one-time endeavor, but rather is completed through repeated and habitual spiritual exercises.
