김사량의 일본어 소설 생성과정 연구- <풀숲 깊숙이>와 <산의 신들>을 중심으로 (The Adaptation Process in Kim Sa Ryang’s Japanese－language Novels －with focus on Kusa fukashi and Yama no kamigamii)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 <풀숲 깊숙이>와 <산의 신들>판본의 생성과정을 밝히고, 판본간의 상이한 부분이 갖는 의미를 밝히는 것에 있다.
<풀숲 깊숙이>에서 ‘박인식’은 근대적 ‘계몽’과 민족적 ‘동일시’의 ‘중간항’을 찾으려는 인물이며, 그의 그러한 노력은 사실 통합되지 않은 구조상의 분열(전반부와 후반부)로 나타나 있음을 알 수 있다. 그가 식민지 조선 산읍의 말단 관료인 조선인 군수(숙부) 및 코풀이 선생에게 느끼는 반감과 동정은 ‘화전민’을 ‘계몽’하려는 의지와 동정이라는 문제와 결부되서, 화합할 수 없는 작품의 구조적 분열을 불러온 결정적인 원인임을 알 수 있다. 그러한 과정 속에 드러난 ‘센티멘탈리즘’은 작가의 의도적인 선택이며, 그것이 작가적 결함이 아님도 기행문과의 대조분석을 통해 분석해 보았다.
한편, <산의 신들>은 ‘조선의 무속’ 및 민담이 작품의 중심축의 하나이며, 그것은 작가의 체험과 픽션 양쪽 모두 ‘조선적 특수성’이라는 문제와 결부된다. 이것은 동시대 김사량 평론에서 반복적으로 강조되는 것이기도 하다. 그러므로 <산의 신들>판본에서 “조선인”이 “국민”으로 치환되는 것을 ‘검열’이나 ‘전향’이라는 문제로만 볼 수 없다. 이것은 당시 내지 및 조선문단에서 논란이 되었던 로칼리티 담론 속에서 살펴보아야 할 것이며, 김사량이 쓰고자 했던 ‘조선적 특수성’이라는 문제는 내지의 로칼리티 담론을 대전제로 수용하면서 그 안에서 ‘조선인’의 나아가야 할 길을 모색했던 흔적이기도 하다.
이러한 개작 과정 연구를 통해 기행문 및 참고 문건에서 많은 부분이 소설로 변용되서 사용되고 있는 것을 확인 할 수 있었으며, 김사량이 조선어에서 일본어로 소설 창작의 거점을 옮겨가는 한 양상을 미력하나마 밝힐 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to explicate and compare the adaptation processes involved in the production of Kusa fukashi and the three wood block versions of Yama no kamigamii. In addition, through contrastive analysis of the novelistic texts with the Korean－and Japanese－language travel writings from which they were adapted, I seek, ultimately, to reinterpret the author’s intentions and the novels’ meanings. In so doing, I also confirm the parts of travel writings and reference materials that were changed in the adaptation process.
In Kusa fukashi, protagonist Park In－Shik tries to find an intermediate point between modernity (enlightenment) and Korean ethnic identity. We can see that the text’s structural division into two unsynthesized halves reflects this attempt.
When we link the antipathy and sympathy that Park feels from his uncle (a government official) and his teacher, Hanakami (literally, ‘nose－blower’), to the problem of whether to try to enlighten or to sympathize with the hwajeonmin (lower－class farmers whose slash－and－burn agricultural practices had been illegalized), we can discern the crucial factor in this structural division. In comparing the novel to the travel piece, we can see that the sentimentalism that emerges in the process is the intentional choice of the author and not a textual flaw.
On the other hand, Korean musok (shamanism) and folklore are central themes in Yama no kamigamii. Their depiction is partly fictional and partly based on the author’s personal experience, and both are tied to the issue of ‘Korean particularity’ (Chōsenteki na tokushusei). Therefore, the replacement of “Korean” with “imperial subject” (kokumin) in Yama no kamigamii cannot simply be explained as a matter of censorship or conversion (tenkō).
Rather, we must address this within the context of the “locality discussion” (“locality danron”), taking place at that time in both Japanese and Korean literary establishments, concerning whether to consider Korea as a province of Japan. Although I see the “locality discussion” in Japan as the major premise in the issue of “Korean particularity,” I also find traces of Koreans’ search for the right path to follow.
