초록

Norwegian Wood written by Murakami Haruki is the best seller all around of world. This novel was adapted by Tran Anh Hung, a Vietnamese director. He remarked that the adapted fiction must be a portrait of the original fiction. This way is similar to the attitude toward a faithful adaptation. An adaptation is not borrowing of stories from fiction. Also the relation of influence is not on one way. The main reason of adaptation is the aesthetic desire of directors. Norwegian Wood is a fascinating text which arouses the aesthetic desire of adaptation to directors.
The novel by Murakami Haruki adopted the first person narration and constructed the narrative of confession. Moreover, other characters are presented through the first person narrator’s view and voice. So the description of characters and sceneries reveals the narrator-character’s emotions and thoughts. This novel pursues a love story but contains the contemporary atmosphere. Main motives and themes are illness, suicide and sexuality. All of these are spread with the sentiment of loss and grief.
Norwegian Wood directed by Tran Anh Hung attempted to contain the original novel’s narrations and lines through voice of narrations and dialogues. But it is not enough to convey the original work’s atmosphere and emotional aura. Therefore, the movie, Norwegian Wood has superior accomplishment. In some scenes, the advantages of film media was utilized so that the audiences of the movie could be affected. A long take shooting, equal division close up scenes and appropriate sound construct unique esthetics.
Though the movie Norwegian Wood failed to be a precise portrait of the original novel, it showed one of possibilities about adaptation. It presented a memorable film esthetics which stemmed from the original novel. They are extreme sensibilities. But while this movie eliminates story and atmosphere of the contemporary, only meager and personal love story remains. The love story which decolored epoch’s color lost a strong impression. If another director would adapt this novel, it would be a different portrait of the novel. It could present different esthetics contained the original work.
