紡錘車 분석을 통한 청동기시대호서지역 製絲術 변화 (Change in the Bronze Age Spinning Technology of the Hoseo Region Based on an Analysis of Spindle Whorls)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 방추차를 비교하여 청동기시대 전・중기 전이과정에서의 제사술 변화를 이해하는 것이다. 製絲術은 섬유를 실로 만드는 기술을 뜻하며, 방추차는 섬유를 꼬는 데 필요한 제사구이다. 기존의 청동기시대 방추차 연구는 주로 방추차 형식의 편년과 계통을 파악하는 데 그 목적이 있었고, 상대적으로 방추차의 기능에 초점을 맞추어 제사구로서의 의미를 찾으려는 시도는 부족하였다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제인식을 바탕으로 방추차를 시기별로 비교하여 제사의 기술적 변화를 통시적인 관점에서 살펴보고자 한다.
이러한 분석을 위해서는 먼저 방추차의 물리적 속성의 기능을 이해해야 한다. 제사 과정에서 섬유 및 실에 가해지는 장력의 크기와 방추차의 무게는 비례하고 섬유가 꼬아지는 속도와 방추차의 지름은 반비례하기 때문에, 섬유의 종류나 실 굵기에 따라 제사에 적합한 방추차의 무게 및 지름은 달라진다. 그러므로청동기시대 방추차의 지름과 무게를 시기별로 비교하면 제사술의 상대적인 차이를 알 수 있다.
호서지역을 대상으로 청동기시대의 방추차를 시기별로 비교한 결과 전・중기 전이과정에서 소형・경량방추차의 비율은 증가하고 대형・중량 방추차의 비율은 감소하였다. 따라서 전・중기 전이과정에서 제사술의 변화가 발생하였다는 점을 알 수 있다. 제사를 통해 획득한 실은 주로 직물을 제작하는 데 사용되며, 직물을 이용하여 의복을 제작하기 때문에 이러한 제사술의 변화는 의복제작의 측면에서 살펴볼필요가 있다. 필자는 전・중기 전이과정에서 발생하는 환경・사회적 변화 속에서 제사술 변화를 이해하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the change in spinningtechnology that occurred alongside the transition from the Early Bronze Age tothe Middle Bronze Age by comparing spindle whorls. Spinning technology refersto the technology of twisting fiber strands together to form yarn, and a spindlewhorl is a spinning instrument needed to twist fiber strands together. Previousstudies on spindle whorls from the Bronze Age were mainly aimed at figuringout their chronology and genealogy. Attempts at interpretations of the functionand meanings of such spinning instruments have been relatively lacking. Basedon an awareness of this shortcoming, the present study compared the spindlewhorls of each period and examined the technological changes that took placein spinning from a diachronic perspective.
Relative differences in spinning technology can be estimated byunderstanding the relationship between fiber, yarn, and spindle whorls, and bycomparing and analyzing spindle whorls. The tension imposed on fiber andyarn in the spinning process is proportionate to the weight of a spindle whorl,and the speed of twisting fiber strands together is in inverse proportion to thediameter of a spindle whorl, which means that the weight and diameter of aspindle whorl proper for spinning vary according to the type of fiber and thethickness of yarn. Thus it is possible to identify relative differences in spinningtechnology by comparing the Bronze Age spindle whorls in terms of diameterand weight according to period.
The study compared the Bronze Age spindle whorls of the Hoseo regionby period and found that an increase in the percentage of small and lightspindle whorls accompanied the transition from the Early Bronze Age to theMiddle Bronze Age, and that a decrease in the percentage of large and heavy紡錘車 분석을 통한 청동기시대 호서지역 製絲術 변화 | 31spindle whorls accompanied this transition, which indicates that changes inspinning technology occurred alongside the transition from the Early BronzeAge to the Middle Bronze Age. Produced through spinning, yarn is usuallyused to make textile, which is, in turn, used to make clothes. Thus, changesin spinning technology must also be understood in association with clothesmaking. Attempts were made to understand the changes in spinning technologyin relation to the social, economic, and environmental changes that took place inconjunction with the transition from the Early Bronze Age to the Middle BronzeAge.
