적합성 이론에서 본 문화특정어의 번역특성: 『순이 삼촌』의 고유명사 한영번역을 중심으로 (A Relevance-based Study of Culture-specific Items: Cases of Proper Nouns in the Korean-to-English Novel Suni-Samch'on)

초록

The purpose of this paper is to describe how culture-specific items in the novel 『순이삼촌』 Suni Samch’on were translated into English in the two translated texts. In TT1 most cases of proper nouns were translated in the form of direct translation. On the other hand, in TT2 they were mostly translated in the form of indirect translation. TT1 has been found to be optimally more relevant than TT2 as far as the way proper nouns were translated is concerned. Due to the differences of cognitive environments between the readers of ST and those of TT, based on Gutt's relevance translation theory, translators need to provide contextual information in the main text if it is needed. In this paper, Aixela's(1996) definition of the culture-specific items is adopted. In the section 4, proper nouns belonging to the culture-specific items in TT1 & TT2 are analyzed and then it is decided whether or not they fall under indirect translation and optimal relevance translation.
When we have analyzed those cases in TT1 & TT2, it turns out that proper noun is translated through transliteration, a mixed use of transliteration and linguistic translation or linguistic translation. Of course, the translation mode of TT1 is significantly different from that of TT2. As a result, the difference of the extent in optimal relevance translation as well as direct and indirect translation is distinct. For example, the place name, ‘서촌’ is directly translated into ‘West Village’ in TT1 and indirectly into ‘west part’ in TT2, which means the first one delivers the interpretation of the ST expression to the target readers because of complete interpretive resemblance between ST and TT1, On the other hand, the semantic effect of the place name of the ST is lost in TT2 as a result of an indirect translation. Since we have a possible expression to deliver the original thought of the ST, the TT2 turns out not to achieve optimal relevance.
