순명효황후 언간체의 조형성 고찰 (The Formative Characteristics of the Letter Writing Style of Empress Sunmy_ghyo)

초록

조선왕조 마지막 임금인 순종의 정비 순명효황후(1872~1904)의 친필 언간체의 조형적 특징을 장법미-결구미-용필미 분석을 통하여 밝혀낸것이다. 아울러 순명효황후의 언간체는 시어머니인 명성황후(1851~1895) 친필 언간체의 영향을 얼마나 받았는가를 탐색하기 위하여 두 황후의 편지글씨(언간체)를 모두 비교 분석하였다.
두 황후는 며느리와 시어머니 사이이며 같은 여흥 민씨이고 두 황후 모두 33세, 45세의 젊은 나이에 세상을 떠난 황후였지만 일찍이 예술적감각이 뛰어난 한글서간체를 남겼다. 즉 순명은 10편, 명성은 124편의 아름다운 한글 서체의 언간을 남겼다. 이 중 각각 3편씩을 선정하여 비교분석하였다.
순명효황후는 11세에 입궐하여 왕비로써 소양교육을 받으면서 한글 쓰기에 대한 시어머니인 명성황후의 영향을 크게 받았다고 볼 수 있다.
이러한 서로의 관계에서 한글언간체 형성에도 관계가 깊이 있으리라고 보고 두 언간체의 장법적-결구적-용필적 특징을 심층 분석하였다. 그결과 두 언간은 기본적인 필법은 같으나 서풍적 필체의 특징은 다른 것으로 분석되었다. 즉 순명은 명성보다 정통 궁체의 필법에 맞게 썼으며,유려하고 시원한 느낌의 한글흘림체의 언간으로 분석되었다. 이를 장법-결구법-용필법으로 나누어 특징을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째 장법적 특징이 각각 다르다. 명성편지는 행수가 적고 배자를 자유분방하게 나타냈으나 순명의 장법은 행수가 많고 배자를 가지런하게나타내었다.
둘째 결구법-용필법적 특징이 각각 다르다. 순명은 명성보다 문자사이의 연결선을 굵고 힘차게 나타냈으나, 명성은 순명보다 부드럽게 나타내어 역동적인 맛이 없어 보인다. 순명은 명성 언간체 보다 강하고-곧고-유려하게 표현한 것으로 나타났다.
이상과 같이 같은 시대, 같은 장소, 같은 신분, 같은 교육, 같은 가문 등으로 직접적으로 명성황후의 영향을 받은 순명효황후의 언간체는 명성보다 더 조형미가 돋보이는 것으로 분석되었다. 이것은 명성보다 더 어린 나이에 들어와 궁중의 법도를 익히며 궁체를 익혔을 것으로 추정되며, 서로의 직접적인 수직관계에서 답습하는 것이 아닌 향상적인 관계로 발전했다는 점에서 높이 평가되는 언간체 형성의 본보기라고 말 할 수있다.
앞으로 또한 장렬왕후(1624~1688), 인선왕후(1618~1674), 명성왕후(1642~1683), 인현왕후(1667~1701)등 거의 한 시대에 살았던 왕후들의 글씨가 비슷한 서풍을 지니고 있는 것과 같은 맥락이며, 앞으로의 연구과제는 비슷한 그 시대의 서풍을 분석하여 조선조 왕후들의 언간체에서 언간이 지니는 예술적 가치를 학문으로 승화시킬 수 있는 계기가 되기를 고대해 본다.

영어초록

This paper illuminates the formative characteristics of Korean letters written by Empress Sunmyŏnghyo (1872-1904), the wife of the last Chosŏn emperor Sunjong. It analyzes the usage of a sentence, the closing of a phrase, and the usage of the brush in her letter writing style. Furthermore, to examine how much her letter writing style was influenced by her mother-in-law, Empress Myŏngsŏng (1851-1895) who also left many Korean letters, it compares the letter writing styles of the two empresses,who were not only in-laws but also from the same family, Min of Yŏhŭng. They both died young at 33 and at 45 respectively, and left letters that showed their superb artistic senses in their Korean letter writing. Sunmyŏnghyo left 10 letters and Myŏngsŏng left 124 letters in beautiful Korean. I chose three letters for each and compared them for this analysis.
Empress Sunmyŏnghyo entered the royal palace at 11, and while trained as a queen, was influenced greatly by her mother-in-law Empress Myŏngsŏng. This relationship must have left some imprint in Empress Sunmyŏnghyo's letter writing style. Therefore, I tried an in-depth analysis of the two letter styles for their usage of a sentence, their closing of a phrase, and their usage of the brush. The result shows that they shared the fundamentals of the brush manipulation but did have different styles in their writing. That is, Sunmyŏnghyo wrote more in coordination with the traditional court style while showing a free flowing and brisk style of Korean cursive writing. Her style in three aspects of the usage of a sentence, the closing of a phrase,and the usage of the brush can be summarized as follows;Firstly, they had different usages of a sentence. Myŏngsŏng's letters had only few lines and distributed characters quite freely.
Sunmyŏnghyo had many lines and distributed characters evenly. Secondly, they had different closing of a phrase and different usage of the brush. Sunmyŏnghyo expressed the connecting lines between characters more broadly and strongly than Myŏngsŏng whereas Myŏngsŏng's soft connection lines did not show the dynamic power of Sunmyŏnghyo's. Sunmyŏnghyo's letter writing style was stronger, straighter, and more beautiful than that of Myŏngsŏng,As discussed, while they shared the same time, the same place, the same status, the same education and the same family,Sunmyŏnghyo's letter writing style that was under direct influence of Myŏngsŏng showed formatively more superb characteristics. Presumably, it is due to the fact that Sunmyŏnghyo entered the palace at a younger age and came to acquire the court style while learning the ways of the court. At any rate, it was an exemplary formation of a good letter writing style in that it was not a hierarchical imitation but a development from her senior's style.
It is also in the same line with the fact that the queens living around the same time period such as Queen Changryŏl (1624~1688), Queen Insŏn (1618~1674), Queen Myŏngsŏng (1642~1683), and Queen Inhyŏn (1667~1701) showed the similar letter writing styles. My future research would analyze the letter writing styles of the letters of the similar age with the aim to academically sublimate the artistic values of the letter writing styles from letters of Chosŏn queens and empresses.
