공주 지역 백제 수막새의 특징과 계통 (A Study on the Features of the Roof-end Tiles of Baekje found in Gongju)

이 글은 웅진기를 중심으로 한 공주 지역 수막새가 가진 문양이나 기술적 특성, 편년적 위치, 계통을 파악하여 그것이 백제 기와 전체에서 차지하는 위치를 확인하기 위해 작성되었다.
2장에서는 공주 공산성과 대통사지, 정지산유적, 서혈사지, 신원사지, 주미사지를 비롯하여 부여용정리사지와 세종시 봉산리산성 등지에서 출토된 웅진기 백제 수막새에 대해 각 유적별 형식분류안과 제작기법을 검토했다. 공주 지역의 백제 기와는 공산성식, 대통사식, 서혈사식 수막새로 부를 수있을 만큼 각 유적마다 독특한 문양과 제작기술이 활용되고 있다.
3장에서는 웅진기 수막새들이 한성기나 사비기와 어떤 공통성과 차별성을 갖는지, 또 동시기 중국이나 신라의 수막새와 어떤 연관성이 있는지를 검토했다. 웅진기의 수막새들은 한성기의 기와 제작전통을 바탕으로 하여 새롭게 중국 남제나 양의 영향을 받아 성립했다. 경주의 왕궁이나 사원, 사비천도 이후 부여 지역에서 공산성식이 아닌 대통사식 수막새가 유행한 것은 그것이 관영공방에서 만들어졌기 때문이다. 웅진기 공주 지역에서 수막새가 출토된 유적들은 왕궁인 공산성을 비롯하여 사원 유적에 한정되는 경향이 있다. 웅진기 백제 왕실의 빈전으로 알려진 정지산유적의 연화문수막새는 사비 천도 이후인 6세기 후반에 제작된 것으로 드러나 기존의 殯殿說을 재검토할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to determine the position occupied by the convex roof-end tiles of the Baekje period (18 BC~660 AD) found in Gongju (olden-day name: Ungjin, capital of the Baekje dynasty from 475 until 538) in the entire chronology of Baekje roof tiles by examining their patterns and technical features, etc.
Chapter 2 reviews the shapes of and production techniques used to make the convex roof-end tiles unearthed from Gongsanseong Fortress, the temple sites of Daetongsa, Seohyeolsa, Sinwonsa, and Jumisa, and the archaeological sites at Jeongjisan Mountain (in Gongju); the site of a temple in Yongjeong-ri, Buyeo (olden-day name: Sabi, capital of the dynasty from 538 until 660); and the Fortress in Bongsan-ri, Sejong. The convex roof-end tiles found at each site display unique patterns and production skills quite unlike those seen elsewhere. As such, researchers gave them such names as Gongsanseong-type tiles, Daetongsa-type tiles, Seohyeolsa-type tiles, and so forth.
Chapter 3 reviews the similarities and differences between convex roof-end tiles dating from the period when Ungjin (Gongju) was the capital (Ungjin Baekje Period) and those dating from the period when Hanseong (present-day Seoul) (Hanseong Baekje period) or Sabi (Buyeo) was the capital (Sabi Baekje period), and the convex roof-end tiles made in neighboring Silla and China during the contemporary period. The convex roof-end tiles dating from the Ungjin Baekje period were made based on the tradition established during the Hanseong Baekje period and under the influence of either the Southern Qi Dynasty or Liang Dynasty of China. The widespread use of Daetongsa-type convex roof-end tiles-rather than Gongsanseong-type files-in royal palaces and temples in Gyeongju, the capital of Silla, and Sabi of Baekje was due to their production in government-run workshops. Most of the sites in Ungjin from which convex roof-end tiles have been unearthed are Gongsanseong Fortress and temple sites.
The convex roof-end tiles decorated with lotus patterns unearthed from the site at Jeongjisan Mountain, which is known to have been the site of the Funeral Hall of the royal family during the Ungjin Baekje period, are found to have been made in the late sixth century during the Sabi Baekje period, which raises the need to recheck the facts about the location of the Funeral Hall.
