가야 성곽 성벽의 수･개축에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Repair and Reconstructionof Fortress Walls in Gaya)

초록

성곽에 관한 고고학적 연구는 해석적 담론이나 주변 유적과의 관계, 관방체계 및 교통로 등을 다루는 거시적 관점과 성곽의 구조, 성벽 및 부속시설의 수･개축, 시기별 경관 등을 파악하는 미시적 관점을 통한 접근이 동시에 이루어지는 것이 타당하다. 미시적 관점에 대한 분석이 선결되지 않는 상황에서 거시적 관점만으로 이루어지는 정치사적 해석은 오류가 발생할 수밖에 없다. 하지만 우리나라의 성곽연구는 다른 유구나 유물과 달리 토층과 중복관계 및 유물의 출토맥락에 대한 면밀한 분석 없이 토목공학적 개념을 적극적으로 수용하는 선에서 구조를 파악하고 있어 당대의 사회상을 그리는 데 지장을 주고 있다는 점은 부정하기 어렵다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 대상유적에 대한 철저한 재분석과 타 유적과의 비교･검토가 이루어져야 한다. 당연하지만, 조사결과를 비판적 검토 없이 인용할 경우 분석대상의 검증이 불가능하게 될 뿐 아니라 조사에 오류가 있으면, 그 결과를 분석한 연구 역시 같은 문제가 발생하게 된다.
이러한 관점에서 이 글은 현재까지 시･발굴조사가 이루어진 가야 성곽에 성벽에 대해서 재분석을 하였다. 그 결과 가야 성곽의 성벽에는 다수의 수･개축 이루어졌으며, 연구자들이 가야 성곽을 이해하는 인식을 알 수 있었다. 하나는 가야 성곽의 구조를 파악하는데, 토성은 안식각 이상으로 쌓을 수 없다는 통설에 근거하여 해석하고 있으며, 신라보다 백제가 쌓은 성벽의 구조 및 부속시설과 비교･검토하는 것이 일반적인 것 같다.
다른 하나는 대부분 성벽에서 보수와 수･개축흔이 이루어진다. 그 주체는 가야와 신라에서 조선시대까지 다양하다. 이러한 양상을 보이는 이유는 가야의 활용 시기뿐 아니라 폐성 후에도 재사용된다는 점에서 자연스러운 현상으로 이해할 수 있다. 성곽유적을 이해할 때 남산신성비의 내용을 참고할 필요가 있다.
마지막으로 현재까지 가야 성곽에서 확인된 수･개축은 여섯 가지이지만, 조사가 증가할수록 더 많은 형태가 확인될 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

Archaeological research on fortresses should adopt interpretative discourse, a macroscopic perspective, which examines relationships with surrounding sites, defense systems, and transportation routes, and a microscopic perspective, which analyzes the structure, reconstruction, and renovation of fortress walls and associated facilities over different periods. Political-historical interpretations based on the macro perspective, without predetermining the micro aspects, are prone to errors. However, fortress studies in Korea have often relied heavily on civil engineering concepts to understand structures, without conducting detailed analyses of stratigraphy, overlapping relationships, and excavation contexts. This approach has hindered a comprehensive understanding of the social situation. To resolve this issue, a thorough reassessment of target sites and comparative studies with other sites are necessary. Citing previous research without critical examination can make it impossible to verify the subject of analysis, and any errors in excavation results will inevitably lead to flawed research findings.
From this perspective, this thesis reanalyzes the fortress walls of Gaya fortifications that have been excavated so far. The findings reveal that the fortress walls of Gaya underwent multiple reconstructions and renovations, providing insight into how researchers perceive Gaya fortifications. To understand Gaya fortress structures is often based on the conventional belief that earthen fortifications cannot be built beyond the angle of repose. Additionally, researchers tend to compare and analyze fortress walls and associated facilities constructed by Baekje rather than Silla.
Another significant observation is that most fortress walls exhibit signs of reconstruction and renovation, it occurred from the Gaya and Silla periods through the Joseon Dynasty. This phenomenon can be naturally explained by the continued use of these fortresses, not only during the Gaya period but also after their abandonment and reuse in later periods. To understanding fortress sites, it is necessary to consider the inscriptions on the Namsan Sinseong Monument.
Lastly, six types of reconstruction and renovation have been identified in Gaya fortifications. As excavation cases increase, more variations are expected to be discovered.
