조선말기 칠성도의 수노인 도상 연구 (A Study on the paintings of Jurojin(壽老人) of Chilseongdo in the late Joseon Dynasty)

초록

수노인도는 인간 수명을 관장한 수성(壽星)을 인격화하여 그린 것이다. 한국에서 최초로 수노인성을 표현한 예는 덕흥리 2호분에서 볼 수 있다. 여기서 수노인성은 원형으로 묘사되어 있다.
수노인을 인격화하여 그렸다는 기록은 『신증동국여지승람』에서 찾을 수 있다. 지리서에는 수노인도를 전각 내부에 안치하고 제를 지냈다하였으며, 이를 통해 조선전반기에 수노인 그림과 제를 지낸 건물이 존재했을 것으로 추정된다.
조선전기 수노인 관련 그림이 희박한 요인은 수노인성제 축소와 숭유억불정책으로 소격소 혁파로 보고 있다. 이후 정조는 수노인제를 복구하려 하였으나 실패하였다. 이후 조선말기에는 수노인 도상이 칠성도에 유입되어 유불 습합을 엿볼 수 있으며, 민화에도 유행한다.
수노인의 신체적 특징과 세부도상에 대해 살펴보면 다음과 같다.
수노인의 신체 특징은 長頭, 短身으로 19세기후반에는 얼굴과 머리 비율이 1:2 또는 1:3으로 정수리 부분을 과장되게 표현하며 20세기에는 정수리부분이 낮아지면서 차츰 쇠퇴된다.
수노인과 함께 등장한 사슴과 두루마리는 초기부터 보이며, 동자는 명대에 나타난다. 학은 수노인이 공간을 이동할 때 이동 수단으로 표현되고 있다.
지물은 두루마리, 홀, 영지, 여의, 호리병, 복숭아 등이 있다. 두루마리는 수노인이 두 손에 쥐고 있는 표현에서 이를 펼쳐보거나, 지팡이에 매단 모습으로 변화된다. 호리병은 이철괴의 지물로 수노인이 소지하면서 허리춤에 차거나 동자가 대신 들고 있는 유형으로 나타난다. 불로장생의 상징인 복숭아는 칠성도 보다는 주로 민화에서 수노인의 지물로 등장한다.
이와같이 칠성도와 민화에서 수노인의 선호는 조선말기 수명 장수에 대한 사회문화적 풍조를 반영한 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

The star of longevity Painting is a person who depicts Mercury, which controls human life. For the first time in Korea, an example of expressing the south pole star can be seen in Deokheung-ri No.2. Here, the star of longevity is described as a round circle. The record depicting the elderly as a person can be found in 『Shinjeungdongguk Yeoji Seungram. In the geography book, there is a record that the star of longevity Painting was placed inside the hall and the rites were held. Through this, it is estimated that there existed a building where the star of longevity Painting and ceremonies were held in the first half of the Joseon Dynasty.
In the early Joseon Dynasty, the reason that the picture related to the star of longevity Painting was scarce was the reduction of the rituals The star of longevity and the policy to suppress the worship of The star of longevity. After that, King Jeongjo tried to restore Suoinje, but failed. However, in the late Joseon Dynasty, the star of longevity Painting was painted on Chilseongdo, which gives a glimpse of the combination of Buddhism and Confucianism, and is also popular in folk paintings.
The physical characteristics and detailed drawings of the star of longevity Painting are as follows. The star of longevity has a raised head and is short. In the second half of the 19th century, the face-to-head ratio was 1:2 or 1:3, and the top of head was exaggerated. In the 20th century, it gradually disappears as the top of head lowers.
Deer and scrolls that appeared together with the star of longevity were seen from the beginning, and Dongja(童子) appeared in Ming dynasty. Crane was expressed as a means of transportation when The star of longevity moved through space.
Belongings include scrolls, ganoderma lucidum, yeoui, gourd bottle, and peaches. The scroll changes from an expression held by the star of longevity in both hands to unfold it or hang it on a cane. The gourd bottle appears as a type held by the star of longevity in the hand, worn on the waist, or held by Dongja(童子) instead. Peaches, a symbol of immortality, are mainly painted in folk paintings.
In this way, the preference of The star of longevity in Chilseongdo and folk paintings reflected the socio-cultural trend of longevity in the late Joseon period
