<쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>의 전쟁 서술 방식과 문학적 의미－임진왜란을 중심으로－ (The Description Method of War and its Literary Meaning in Sojungwhayeokdaeseol focusing on Imjinyaoran)

초록

<쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>은 조선 역대 임금의 행적을 바탕으로 명신과 저명인물의 내력을 기술한 역사서사이다. 이 작품의 권지삼에 임진왜란에 대한 이야기가 실려 있다. 1589년에 임진왜란을 처음 언급한 이후 1592년 전쟁의 발발과 당시 조선의 상황을 상세히 기술하고 1599년 명의 원조 규모를 정리한 것으로 임진왜란 관련 서술을 마무리한다. 역사서사로서 사실을 전달하는 것에 충실한 면모를 보이지만 곳곳에 문학적 요소를 가미하여 작자의식을 드러내고 있다.
첫째, 임진왜란 이야기를 시작하기에 앞서 전쟁이 필연적으로 발발할 수밖에 없었던 조건과 상황을 나열하여 전쟁서사의 도입부를 구성하였다. 임진왜란이 일어나기 이전의 사건을 선택적으로 기술함으로써 조선의 위태로운 분위기를 고조하고 임진왜란 이야기를 독립적으로 형상화할 수 있었다. 둘째, 임진왜란의 경과를 시간 순서대로 나열하여 소개하면서도 조헌과 이순신의 일화를 구체적으로 기술하여 전쟁의 중심인물로 부각하였다. 이들의 이야기를 통해 임진왜란에 대한 독자의 이해를 도울 뿐만 아니라 문학적 감동까지도 느낄 수 있도록 하였다. 셋째, 역사서사를 표방하되 선조에 대한 묘사는 매우 긍정적으로 이루어졌다. 이를 위해 그가 겪은 시련을 강조하고 실정에 대한 책임은 다른 인물에게 전가하거나 해당 서술을 제외하기도 하였다.
<쇼듕화역ᄃᆡ셜>은 조선의 역사를 기술하는 한 과정으로 임진왜란을 다루면서 사실을 단순하게 나열하지 않고 전쟁과 관련한 이야기를 재구성하여 독자를 배려하였다. 객관적 사실을 기술하는 것이 역사서사의 당연한 특성일 것이나 여기에 작자의식을 반영하여 문학적 요소를 포함시켰다. 그러면서 사소한 부분에서 사실과 다른 부분이 생기기도 하고 특정 인물의 일대기를 확장하여 소개하기도 하였다. 이러한 문예적 서술 방식은 독자의 흥미를 자극한 것은 물론 허구가 아닌 역사를 즐길 수 있다는 만족감도 부여할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Sojungwhayeokdaeseol is a historical narrative focusing on the achievements of the king in the Joseon Dynasty while covering the description of capable statesmen and famous figures. It deals with s a story about Imjinyaoran, the Japanese invasion of the Joseon Dynasty in 1592, which covers a considerable part in this work. We can find the author’s consciousness added by literary elements in many areas in spite of a characteristic of delivering the facts of the war faithfully.
First, it begins with the introduction of an independent story in which the conditions and circumstances of outbreak of the Japanese invasion are listed. It contained the ominous sign from heaven or extraordinary figure’s prediction warning the coming war. He also introduced the circumstances of being unable to prepare for the war in the Royal court due to the strife between political parties and the ambition of Pungsinsugil.
Second, the anecdotes of JoHeon and Yi Sun-sin were embodied and highlighted as central figures while listing the progress of the Japanese Invasion over time. It was emphasized the fact that Jo Heon continuously filed an appeal to urge preparation of war and that he was killed heroically by raising up forces in the cause of justice. Yi Sun-sin was depicted as a figure respected by the people by constructing turtle ships in advance to prepare for the Japanese invasion and by winning a series of battles.
Third, he tried to portray the King Seonjo positively while advocating the historical narrative with the list of objective facts. To this end, he emphasized the king’s ordeal, shifted his responsibility to other people, and excluded descriptions of his failed administrational situation.
The author of Sojungwhayeokdaeseol reconstructed the whole story for the reader to easily understand instead of simply arranging the fact when dealing with the Japanese invasion. In addition, the author included literary elements by reflecting his consciousness on the description of the fact. In the meantime, there revealed characteristics such as the fact that the story became different from the truth in trivial parts or the biography of a distinguished person was described with extension. This literary style brought about popularity for this historical narrative not only by stimulating readers' interest but also satisfying the pleasure of enjoying real history, not fiction.
