<스캔들: 조선남녀상열지사>(2003)와 <위험한 관계>(2012)는 각각 18세기 말 조선시대와 1930년대 상하이 전쟁기를 배경으로 펼쳐지는 두 편의 사극 영화들이다. 이 작품들은 프랑스 리베르티나주 소설이자 원형적인 방탕자 서사의 18세기적 판본으로 간주되는 『위험한 관계』(1782)를 한국과 중국에서 각색함으로써 탄생하였다. <스캔들: 남녀상열지사>은 이재용 감독이 원작 소설에 의거하여 시나리오를 작성했음을 진술한 바 있고, 이 영화의 성공에 힘입어 제작된 <위험한 관계>는 한국감독 허진호와 중국작가 옌거링(嚴歌苓)이 완성한 작품으로서, 두 영화는 『위험한 관계』의 비교적 충실한 21세기적 판본으로서 수용되었다.
하지만 이러한 서구 방탕자 서사를 두 국가에서 사극화 할 때 동아시아적인 ‘다시 쓰기’가 부각시키는 차이의 지점들이 필연적으로 발생하게 된다. 원작이 다루는 프랑스 혁명 전야의 특유한 현상으로 나타난 자유주의적 리베르티나주는 동아시아 문화권의 사극 영화에서는 낯설고 이질적인 것이며, 이는 어떻게 서사의 타자적인 측면을 수용하고 역사적으로 재맥락화 할 것인가라는 문제를 제기한다. <스캔들: 조선남녀상열지사>와 <위험한 관계>는 어쩌면 낡거나 문화적으로 어설픈 부분을 덜어내고 시대적 맥락에 맞추어 원작을 일정 부분 부정해야만 그것이 제대로 새롭게 도착하는 것임을 보여준다.
이 글은 <스캔들: 조선남녀상열지사>와 <위험한 관계>를 원작의 방탕자 서사에 대하여 ‘동아시아화’를 시도하는 다시 쓰기의 영화적 수행으로서 간주하고자 한다. 주요한 목표는 그 다시 쓰기에 기입되는 차이의 지점들에 대하여 본격적으로 검토해보고자 하는 것이다. 우선, 두 영화의 원작 소설인 『위험한 관계』를 읽어내면서 리베르티나주의 방탕자 서사란 무엇인지 정의내리고, 원형적 방탕자 서사에 내재하는 쾌락주의와 자유주의의 주제를 식별하여서 그 명암을 개념화하고자 한다. 이어서, <스캔들>과 <위험한 관계>는 방탕자 서사를 동아시아화하는 과정에서 그것을 희석하고 굴절시키는 새로운 자구책으로서 유교적 교화의 각본을 제시한다는 데서 차별화된다. 이는 두 영화를 욕망의 다스림이라는 동양적 가치, 그리고 현실 질서로의 복귀를 시도하려는 모색으로 이해하도록 만든다. 마지막으로, 두 영화는 동아시아의 역사적인 순간들을 재현하는 사극이라는 점에서 결정적으로 원작과 결별할 뿐 아니라 서로 간에도 차별화된다. 포스트-IMF 시대 한국의 시선이 투영되는 18세기 말 조선시대, 그리고 국가주의적인 시장경제 시대의 중국적 관점에서 바라본 1930년대 상하이의 시대상이 펼쳐지면서, ‘역사적인 층위’의 문제들이 동아시아의 과거와 현재라는 시공간을 가로지르며 이들 작품에 중층적인 의미를 덧입히는데 기여한다.

영어초록

Untold Scandal (2003) and Dangerous Liaisons (2012) are the two historical dramas set in the late 18th century during the Joseon Dynasty and the Shanghai War in the 1930s, respectively. These are adaptations of Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1782), a novel dealing with the ideals of French Libertinage in the pre-Revolution era as well as a widely acclaimed 18th-century masterpiece within the trickster or seduction narrative genre. Untold Scandal’s director Lee Jae-yong reportedly wrote his screenplay based on the original novel whereas Dangerous Liaisons, influenced by the success of Lee’s film, was produced in collaboration between Korean director Heo Jin-ho and Chinese writer Yen Gehring. As such the two films were received by the audience as relatively faithful 21st century versions of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
However, when the sexually promiscuous tale of seduction written and loved in the West is made into a historical drama in Korea and China, the differences arise in the process of “re-writing” that inevitably involves East-Asianizing the tale and implementing it into the socio-historical contexts of the region. The liberally-inclined Libertinage, which emerged as a unique phenomenon during the pre-French Revolution period, is unfamiliar and virtually unheard of in East Asian cultures, thereby raising the question of how to accept and re-contextualize the narrative within the East Asian historical dramas. In this regards, Untold Scandal and Dangerous Liaisons can be seen as two fitting examples, demonstrating how the original text can arrive properly only when old and culturally non-relevant parts are removed so certain parts of the original work be denied in accordance with the temporal and spatial implementation that the process of re-writing involves.
This article considers Untold Scandal and Dangerous Liaisons as cinematic practice of re-writing that attempts to “East Asianize” the original seduction narrative. The main objective is to examine the points of difference that can be highlighted in such re-writings. First of all, by reading the original novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses, I try to define the seduction narrative stemming from French Libertinage, and to conceptualize the subject of hedonism and liberalism inherent within it. Subsequently, Untold Scandal and Dangerous Liaisons differentiate themselves from the original novel in that they present a narrative of Confucian edification as a means to dilute and refract the deviating and often anti-cultural description of the seducer-trickster man in the literary tale. The two films can be understood as prioritizing East Asian values of controlling desire and seeking to return to the real order. Finally, being historical dramas that represent specific historical moments in East Asia, the two films not only more decisively depart from the original novel but also differentiate themselves from each other. Untold Scandal offers a contemporary view of the post-IMF Korean society projected onto the images of Joseon Dynasty in the late 18th century whereas Dangerous Liaisons reflects the Chinese perspective of the nationalistic market economy era and transposes it onto the images of Shanghai in the 1930s. Seen in this light, the films are supported by the addition of historically multi-layered meanings that operate across the time and space in East Asia.
