초록

이 글은 북한소설 서사의 성격 탐색에 좀더 조밀한 해석의 토대를 마련하기 위해 ‘수령’의 캐릭터를 서사적 과잉성의 근원 중 하나로 상정하고 이 캐릭터의 초기 형태를 양적 측면에서 추적해 보고자 했다. 이를 위해 1940년대 후반, 즉 북한의 첫 공식 중앙 문예지가 창간호를 낸 1946년 7월부터 1949년 12월까지 중앙 문예지에 발표된 소설 중 41편을 대상으로 삼았다.
여기서 사용한 ‘수령’은 현재 북한소설에 대한 비평공간에서 사용되는 용어를 소급적용한 것이며 이를 통해 논의의 초점을 서사 내부로 좀더 집중시키고자 했다. 즉 ‘수령=김일성’의 도식을 넘어 그것이 서사 내에서 정점에 위치하는 서사적 자리임을 강조하고 그 서사적 자리를 채우는 사례 중 하나로서 ‘수령=김일성’이 이 서사적 자리와 맺는 관계를 드러내고자 했다. 수령이라는 서사적 자리는 사회주의 리얼리즘 일반의 유토피아 지향과 연결되는 정점으로서 북한소설 서사의 일반성과 특수성을 동시에 보여줄 수 있는 키워드 중 하나로 보았기 때문이다. 실제로 초창기 북한소설에서 서사적 자리로서의 수령은 필수적이진 않았으나 대부분의 경우 서사 내에 이미 마련되어 있었으며, 수령의 자리를 채우는 대상이나 형태는, 다수를 점하는 특정 ‘경향’은 있었으나 고정되어 있지 않았다.
구체적 분석에서는 북한소설 초창기 ‘수령’이라는 자리를 채우는 형태의 속성을 드러내는 키워드들을 상정하고 양적 데이터를 병행했다. 이 키워드는 수령의 이름, 풍문성과 보도성으로 구분되는 소문, 수령의 자리를 채우는 대상의 이름을 동반하는 환기물들, 인물로 등장하는 실물로서의 수령 등 네 가지로 명명했으며 이들은 서사에서 개념적으로나 기능적으로 병행되고 관련되면서 수령의 서사적 속성이 구성되는 초기의 경향을 드러낸다. 수령은 현지지도 장면이 삽입된 단 한편의 예외(1949년)를 제외하곤 이 시기 대다수 소설에서 소문이나 환기물의 형태로 등장한다. 그러나 모든 소설에서 수령이 언급되었던 건 아니며 이 시기 수령은 김일성으로 채워진 경우가 압도적이지만, 모든 경우가 그렇지는 않다.
결론적으로 이들은 비연속적 시간성을 전제로, 이름만으로 존재하는 수령이나 풍문성 소문의 영역에 속하는 수령의 유토피아로 열린 무제한의 이상화로부터 이를 담지한 그대로 구체적 실물로 나아가려는 경향을 보여주는 일정한 패턴을 이룬다. 그리고 이 패턴은 유토피아라는 이상의 극점과 실존인물이라는 친근한 혹은 일상적 실물이라는 극점을 수령이라는 정점의 자리에서 조합하고자 함으로써 근본적인 과잉을 초래한다. 아울러 이 과잉은 환기물들을 통해 주로 감지되는 상투성의 조짐으로 빗겨감으로써 친근한(실물의 극한)+유토피아(추상의 극한)라는 조합에 대한 근본적인 딜레마를 노출시키기도 한다.

영어초록

This article used quantitative data which was counted by the number of North Korean fiction narratives, published in the late 1940s, mentioning the Suryeong(the Great Leader)’s name directly. Basically, this study postulates that the Suryeong is one of the sources of excess in the narratives, and this work establishes a foundation for exploration about peculiarities of narratives in North Korean fiction. In this research, the basic materials were 41 pieces of fiction, including short stories and medium-length stories, published in the North Korean central official literary magazines from July 1946 when the very first magazine published its first issue to December 1949, the very end of the 1940s.
Originally, the term the Suryeong used in this article comes from the current literary critical arguments about North Korean literature, so the conception and image of the term was back-dated. However, at the same time, it doesn’t indicate a specific historical person but means a sort of position which is placed in very peak of all positive elements in these narratives. In other words, it was to make a crack in the common bias of a schema of ‘the Suryeong=Kim, Il Sung’. Therefore, it can be expect to reveal relationship between this narrative position as a concept of the Suryeong and ‘the Suryeong=Kim, Il Sung’ as one of the cases filling the position. Thus, the Suryeong is the ultimate position in which the narratives meet heading for Utopia of socialist realism. In other words, the Suryeong is also a place that shows both generality in socialist realism and distinctiveness in North Korean narratives. Actually, in North Korean fiction in this beginning period, the Suryeong as a narrative position was not essential but already prepared. In many cases, there was a specific object in the Suryeong, but the object was not in the Suryeong in every case. It shows that the detail filling the Suryeong was not yet fixed.
In detail for this analysis, I categorized elements of aspects related to the mentions about the Suryeong in the narratives as four key words. These four were named as ‘name of the Suryeong’, ‘hearsay’ divided as ‘rumor’ and ‘report’, ‘object of reminder’ with the Suryeong’ name and ‘the Suryeong as a real figure or character’. These all together reveal the beginning trend of the Suryeong or its attribute interacting each other in the narratives.
In conclusion, the key words construct a kind of pattern related to the Suryeong’s attribute in this period. Mainly, this pattern showed an intend to combine two contrasting attributes, so called, extremely ideal quality and everyday life. In other words, the Suryeong seems to be under a sort of pressure which has to make the Suryeong an actual character in North Korean narratives but, simultaneously, still keeping their idealization of the quality of the rumor. Also, the pressure can be a cause of fundamental excess caused by an attempt to combine both Utopia as a peak of abstractness and familiarity as a peak of realness in the Suryeong as an ultimate position in the narratives. At the same time, the excess exposes a fundamental dilemma the unnatural combination of “familiar”+“Utopia” makes. It is a sort of sidetracked symptom of cliche which is mainly caught through the so-called ‘reminders’.
