초록

This paper aims to observe the origin and background of the Franco regime’s Pro-American and Anti-Communist policy developed during the period of international isolation (1945∼1953), and to examine how the Franco regime obtained benefit from the division of the Korean Peninsula and complicated political situations including the military confrontation in order to overcome international isolation. Furthermore, it attempts to analyze the way in which Spanish historical sources, such as diplomatic documents attest to Spain’s unprecedented enormous and sudden interest in Korea.
When the new world order emerged after World War II, the Franco regime was condemned to international ostracism, due to its previously deep involvement in fascism. Accordingly, for the purpose of changing international public opinion in a favorable direction, it employed various diplomatic strategies: establishing bilateral relations with the United States and the Vatican, improving traditional relationships with the Arab World and Latin America and, the most fundamentally, promoting Anti-Communist propaganda.
Meanwhile, the Franco regime paid attention to the Asian Region, which had been historically only of secondary importance in Spanish foreign policy. The existence of a small amount of anti-Franco sentiment and the gradual increase of Soviet influence in this region provided a favorable environment within the Franco regime for its anti-communist propaganda to be made sustainable and durable.
Above all, the Korean Peninsula, where two superpowers (USA-Soviet Unions) confronted each other in a direct manner, provided appropriate materials. This is the reason why a considerable interest was shown in Korean circumstances in this period, and an explanation of the sudden establishment of diplomatic relations in March of 1950 between Korea and Spain. Moreover, Francoists regarded the Korean War -the first hot war in the era of the Cold War- as a great opportunity to demonstrate that Spain was inextricably important in terms of the geostrategic position and the Anti- Communist ideology.
Regardless of scant relationships between two countries, Korea’s geopolitical importance enabled Francoists to share an ideological similarity and solidarity with Korea. In addition, it supposedly led them to a better relationship with the United States and easier reincorporation into the world
