초록

This book mainly deals with Liu Zaifu, one of the most influential figures of the Chinese thought and literature since the 1980's. It focuses on Liu's critical reflections on his anxiety as an intelligentsia at the end of the 20th century.
There is a consistent theme in Liu Zaifu's thought from the 1980's anti-traditionalism and subjectivity of literature to the 1990's anti-anti-traditionalism and intersubjectivity of literature. It can be described as ‘intellectual independence’ which annihilates stale ideas and formalities which limit the freedom of human thinking and communication.
Liu constantly maintains his intellectual position of ‘speaking truth to power’ in order that he can preserve his intelligentsia spirit of ‘adaptation’ and ‘revolt’ in a critical turning point. He insists that the modern Chinese intellectuals should get out of the box of traditionalism, which has always put them in the center of the society, and become marginal exiles to find their own self-identity and true joy.
Lui Zaifu's thought and literature has been saturated with his constant self-awareness against power, tension against prejudices, and ultimate concerns for humanism. Lui's reflection is ‘a speech of defence for the intellectuals’ who live in a time of intellectual end.
