아담 스미스의『도덕감정론』과의 연관 속에서 찰스 디킨스의『돔비 부자』 읽기 (Reading Charles Dickens’ Dombey and Son in Relation to Adam Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments)

This study compares Charles Dickens’s Dombey and Son (1848) with Adam Smith’s studies in the perspective of modern knowledge as there are great similarities between their thoughts and concepts. Smith understood that his age was a period of transition into the modern society in which one can break free from medieval class order and attempt at self-development through autonomous economic activities based on self-love. Smith’s The Wealth of Nations deals with the challenging commerce society of the Modern Britain, while The Theory of Moral Sentiments proposes an alternative to correct capitalist society in which each person performs economic activities based on self-love. Smith tried to solve the problem by perceiving the world as a binary structure in which on one part, he diagnosed the economic reality of his age and on the other, he presented a correction rod so that the economism may not overly become rampant. The broad framework of a binary structure towards modernity that has started from the great theorist Smith has continued onto Dickens. While Smith proposed the binary structure of the economic problems of modern commercial society and moral sentiment for keeping social order through two books, Dickens presents such binary structure in one novel, forming the broad frame of the novel.
This study analyzes Dicken’s novel in relation to Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Smith emphasized that in order for order and justice to be maintained in a society in which every agent strives for self-development based on self-love, propriety must be kept through the moral sentiment of sympathy. The theory of sympathy that is central in Smith’s is very effective in analyzing the conflict or deviation of sympathy that is given significant weight in Dombey and Son. First, the non-existence of sympathy between the central characters and the causes and effects of sympathy conflict is analyzed in relation to Smith’s The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Second, Smith calls the tendency in which people who have realized wealth and power to easily receive sympathy from others as deception and indicates that it is this deception that brings about the development of modern market economy. How Dickens is similar to and differs from Smith’s position of economic liberalism is analyzed. Third, Dickens’s moral judgment on central characters in ending can be likened to the judgment of what Smith deems as the ‘impartial spectator,’ and Dickens’s tendencies presented through this judgment will be analyzed.
