영조대 『국조속오례의보』․『국조상례보편』의 편찬 배경과 편찬자들 (Gukjo Sok-O’rye’eui-bo and Gukjo Sang’rye Bopyeon, why they were compiled during King Yeongjo’s reign, and who compiled them)

초록

『국조오례의』 편찬(1474, 성종 5) 이후, 270년이 지난 1744년(영조 20)에 후속편에 해당하는 『국조속오례의』의 편찬이 이루어졌다. 『속오례의』에서 표명한 편찬 의의는 ‘오랜 시간을 경과하는 동안 예가 퇴이하여 시대에 맞지 않아서’라고 하였지만, 본고에서는 단지 시간의 흐름에 따라 의례 개정이 이루어진 것으로 보지 않았다. 이미 『속오례의』 편찬 의의를 국가의례의 재정비가 아니라, 정치적 측면에서 이해하고자 하는 시도가 있었다. 그러므로 『속오례의』에서 왕세자와 왕세손의 길례․가례를 보완한 『국조속오례의보』(1751년, 영조 27)와 흉례를 보완한 『국조상례보편』(1752년, 영조 28/1758년, 영조 34) 역시, 『속오례의』의 보완서로만 보기에는 부족한 점이 있다.
이에 따라, 본고에서는 영조시대에 의례서가 새롭게 편찬된 이유를 밝히기 위해 『속오례의』의 편찬에 대한 정보를 바탕으로 그 보완서에 해당하는 『속오례의보』․『상례보편』의 편찬 배경과 편찬자들, 그리고 의례 내용에 대해 살펴보았다. 『속오례의』가 완성되고 7년 만에 나온 『속오례의보』와 『상례보편』은 그 편찬 시기가 노론이 1740년(영조 16) 경신처분을 통해서 출사의 명분을 회복하고 영조의 왕위 정통성 시비가 끝난 지 10여년 정도가 지난 시점이었다. 그리고 이때는 영조가 왕세자에게 대리청정을 맡긴 지(1749년, 영조 25) 얼마 지나지 않은 무렵이었으며, 1755년(영조 31)은 소론 일파가 노론을 제거할 목적으로 일으킨 역모 사건, 즉 乙亥獄事를 계기로 영조가 『闡義昭鑑』을 지어 집권의리를 천명한 해였다.
이와 같은 정치적 상황이 의례서의 편찬 배경이 된 데는 다음과 같은 영조의 입장이 고려되었다. 『속오례의보』와 『상례보편』의 편찬이 이루어진 시기는 임진왜란과 병자호란 이후, 부왕 숙종이 국가 재건사업을 벌이고, 이를 이어받은 영조가 계술사업을 마무리한 이후였다. 이제 정통성 시비에서 벗어난 영조가 국왕으로서 정치적 의지와 포부를 가지고 자신이 주도하는 국가정책을 펼 수 있게 된 것이다. 이렇게 시행된 영조의 탕평정책 가운데, 의례서 편찬이 포함되었다. 요컨대, 영조가 부왕의 사업을 완결 지은 다음, 자신의 집권 기반이었던 노론에 근원을 둔 탕평지지자들을 편찬 구성원으로 하여 펴낸 의례서가 『속오례의보』와 『상례보편』이었다. 그리고 의례서의 편찬에 참여한 구성원들은 노·소론 연합정권을 운영하고자 했던 영조의 탕평정치 아래 전개된 국가 정책의 책임자이며 실무자들이기도 했다. 이들의 당색이 편찬자들의 구성과도 무관하지 않다는 것은 의례서를 단순한 의례 정비 차원에서 이루어진 문화적 산물로만 평가할 수 없는 이유이다. 본고에서는 편찬 배경과 편찬자들에 대한 정보를, 『속오례의』와 『속오례의보』·『상례보편』이 수정·보완 때문이 아니라 정치적 필요에 의해 만들어진 의례서임을 밝히는 출발점으로 삼았다.

영어초록

After 270 years since the compilation of Gukjo O’rye’eui in 1474(5th year of king Seongjong’s reign), a follow-up publication entitled Gukjo Sok-O’rye’eui (“Sok-O’rye’eui” from now on) was compiled and published in 1744, the 20th year of king Yeongjo’s reign. The compilers of Sok-O’rye’eui cited reasons for the publication as the passage of time, and the need to update codes to contemporary reality. But suggested in this article is the possibility of existence of yet another agenda. Such possibility has already been suggested in other works, so in this article -to take one step further- this author would like not to just see Gukjo Sok-O’rye’eui-bo(published in 1751, 27th year of Yeongjo’s reign, “Sok-O’rye’eui-bo” from now on), which was a supplement to the Gil’rye(吉禮) and Ga’rye(嘉禮) codes [that were to be observed by crown princes] that had already been put in Sok-O’rye’eui, and Gukjo Sang’rye Bopyeon(1752 and 1758, Yeongjo’s 34th year, “Sang’rye Bopyeon” from now on) which was another supplement to the Sok-O’rye’eui’s Hyung’rye(凶禮) codes [for crown princes, as well] as a mere ‘update,’ and argue that they were all created for additional reasons.
So, examined in this article is the background of these books’ publication during King Yeongjo’s reign, as well as the individuals who were responsible for the compilation project itself. In order to do that, basic information of Sok-O’rye’eui is first examined, and the nature of codes included in the two new publications are also examined. After seven years had passed since Sok-O’rye’eui’s completion, these two books Sok-O’rye’eui-bo and Sang’rye Bopyeon were published, and it was a decade later since 1740(16th year of Yeongjo’s reign), when the Noron party was reinstated with the Gyeongshin-year order and King Yeongjo was also cleared from the controversy that had been questioning the legitimacy of his own throne. This was also not long after Yeongjo ordered his crown prince to oversee governance of the country in 1749(25th year of his reign), and in 1755(his 31st year), the Soron faction triggered the Eulhae-year purge[乙亥獄事] with the intention to eliminate the Noron party. King Yeongjo had to author Cheon’eui Sogam(闡義昭鑑), and reassert his will and righteousness in governing the country.
This was part of Yeongjo’s plan to rule the dynasty with the so-called Tangpyeong policy, through which the Noron and Soron parties would ally with each other and co-govern the country. The publication of the aforementioned two books were also literally the extension of such will. The completion of ritual code manuals such as Sok-O’rye’eui-bo and Sang’rye Bopyeon came right after a time during which Yeongjo’s father King Sukjong endeavored to rebuild the country after the two Wars with both Japan and Manchurian Qing, and King Yeongjo was trying to wrap those efforts up. It was a time when Yeongjo, who was finally freed from all the controversies and accusations, could really stretch his legs and govern the country in a manner he originally wanted. Such situation would have been definitely reflected in the decision to publish Sok-O’rye’eui, Sok-O’rye’eui-bo, and Sang’rye Bopyeon. The task of examining why they were published and by whom they were created should be the beginning of a larger task trying to define the political agenda and necessities of the reign of King Yeongjo.
