초록

본 논문은 중국 화본소설 속에 나타난 ‘이상한 플롯’을 중심으로 ‘맥거핀 이론’을 통해 작가와 작품, 독자와의 관계를 다양한 시각으로 살펴보았다. 이 연구로 인해 작품 속의 ‘이상한 플롯’은 단지 작가의 실수나 서사의 오류, 혹은 서술 구성상의 결점이나 스토리 전개의 걸림돌이 아니라, 작가의 치밀한 서술 계획과 긴밀하게 연관되어 구축된 것임을 확인할 수 있다. 결국, 맥거핀은 독자들에게 알고 싶어 하는 욕구를 심어주고, 이야기가 계속 진행되기를 바라는 욕망을 배양하는 서사적 장치라고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 맥거핀을 중국 화본소설에서는 크게 ‘전반부’와 ‘후반부’의 두 가지 방식으로 운용하고 있다.
전반부의 경우에는 도입부에 작품에 집중하도록 하여 작품에 대한 이해와 흥미를 일순간 증가시키고, 이러한 작품을 이해하는 시각이 다른 스토리의 전개에 자연스럽게 전환하도록 하는 과정을 보여 주고 있다. 후반부의 경우에는 서사 전개에 대해서 다소 지루할 수 있는 순간에 흥미의 제고와 전환을 불러일으켜 이후 전개되는 스토리에 대해서 관심을 지속해서 유지하도록 하는 데 있다. 맥거핀이 전반부 혹은 후반부에 집중적으로 사용되더라도 공통으로 ‘긴장’과 ‘이완’의 특징을 가지는데, 이러한 특징은 독자의 반응과 호응이 중심이 되어 서사 전개를 탄력적으로 조절하는 데에 초점이 맞추어진 속성이다.
맥거핀의 운용은 작품의 스토리 전개와 작가의 서술 계획에서 서로 명확하게 구분되어 나타나는 것이 아니라, 서로 맞물리면서 기능적으로 움직이고 있다. 작가의 서술 계획은 결국 작품의 스토리 전개를 수단으로 맥거핀은 탄력적으로 작동시키고 있는데, 작가는 이러한 맥거핀을 활용하여 스토리 전개 속도나 완급을 조율하고 서사 내용의 긴장과 이완의 정도를 가감하고 있다. 이를 통해 독자의 작품 서사에 대한 몰입을 유도하는데, 이러한 관심은 작품에 대한 흥미로 전환되어 작품에 대한 집중을 더욱 향상하는 역할을 한다. 이처럼 ‘화본소설’이라는 원전과 ‘맥거핀 이론’이라는 방식의 연계와 운용을 통해 줄거리와 주제, 인물과 서사의 일반적인 연구와는 다른 연구 방법과 관점을 제시할 수 있고, 새로운 의미와 가치, 역할과 목적을 폭넓게 살펴볼 수 있다. 그뿐만 아니라 이후 소설 작품의 구성과 내용을 폭넓게 이해하고 작가의 창작 의도와 설계, 독자의 반응과 심리 등을 포괄적으로 탐색하는 데 유용하면서도 효과적인 방안을 제시할 것으로 여겨진다.

This paper examines the relationship between the author, the work, and the reader through the MacGuffin Theory, focusing on the ‘Bizarre Plots’ found in Chinese Hua-Ben Novels(話本小說). Through this study, it is evident that the ‘Bizarre Plots’ in the work are not merely the result of the author’s mistakes, narrative errors, or shortcomings in storytelling structure. Instead, they are intricately linked to the author’s meticulous narrative plan. Ultimately, the Macguffin serves as a narrative device that instills a desire in readers to uncover information and cultivates a longing for the story to progress. In Chinese Hua-Ben Novels(話本小說), the MacGuffin is employed in two distinct ways: in the ‘front part’ and the ‘back part’ of the narrative. In the ‘front part’, the focus is on concentrating on the work in the introduction. This serves to enhance understanding and interest in the work, smoothly transitioning the perspective of understanding towards the unfolding story. In the ‘back part’, the MacGuffin plays a role in elevating and redirecting interest during moments that might otherwise be perceived as monotonous in the narrative development. The aim is to sustain the reader’s interest in the unfolding story. Even when the Macguffin is concentrated either in the ‘front part’ or the ‘back part’, it consistently exhibits the characteristics of ‘tension’ and ‘relaxation’. These features are inherently focused on dynamically adjusting the narrative development, with a primary focus on readers’ reactions. The utilization of the Macguffin is not clearly separated between the development of the story and the author’s narrative plan; instead, they interweave seamlessly and functionally complement each other. The author’s narrative plan ultimately employs the Macguffin to dynamically guide the progression of the story, allowing the author to regulate the pace of the narrative and modulate the levels of tension and relaxation. This naturally encourages readers to immerse themselves in the narrative of the work. This heightened engagement transforms into an intrinsic interest, further enhancing the overall concentration on the work. The interaction between ‘Hua-Ben Novels(話本小說)’ and the ‘MacGuffin Theory’ offers a unique approach and perspective to the study of plot, theme, characters, and narrative. This interplay introduces new meanings and values to the work, exploring a broad range of roles and purposes comprehensively. Furthermore, it is anticipated that this will not only contribute to a broad understanding of the structure and content of subsequent novel works but also present a useful and effective approach to explore the author’s creative intent, design, as well as reader responses and psychology.
