초록

초부는 깊은 산 중에서 땔감을 구해오는 인물로 어부와 더불어 산수 자연 속의 은자를 상징하는 회화의 소재였다. 초부는 산수 자연의 섭리를 완성하는 점경인물로 묘사되기 시작하여 조선중기 이후 고사인물화의 주인공으로 등장하였다. 또한 조선 후기에는 초부가 땔감을 어깨나 등에 지고 힘겹게 나르는 부신이 지닌 상징성이 작품의 주제와 결부되어 다채롭게 시각화되었다.
땔감은 생존을 위해 끊임없이 마련해야 하는 것이기에 땔감이 떨어지는 것은 곧 집안의 걱정거리였다. 따라서 힘겹게 땔감을 나르는 부신은 삶의 고생의 표현이자 그와 같은 어려움을 극복해내는 희망적인 장면이었다. 또한 부신은 관직을 맡아 수행하는 것을 의미하여 순조로운 관직 생활에 대한 염원을 투영하는 장면이었다. 어린 초부가 부지런히 땔감을 나르는 모습이나 땔나무를 지고 글을 읽으며 고생 끝에 성공한 주매신의 고사가 그려진 점은 부신이 근면 성실한 삶의 복록과 같은 의미로 감상되었음을 보여준다. 조선 후기에는 육지에서 수급한 땔감을 파는 시목전이 한강 변에 형성되어 있었는데, 이와 같은 당시 사회상은 실경을 배경으로 한 부신의 장면으로 묘사되기도 했다.
초부의 이미지와 부신의 장면은 독립된 화제로 그려지기보다 작품의 한 소재나 일부분으로 등장했지만 회화 제작과 감상 문화가 확장되던 조선 후기에 다양한 의미와 맥락에서 시각화되었다. 이는 그림의 일부분을 구성하는 소재나 장면도 작품의 주제를 강조하는 시각적 장치로 기능하고 감상자의 시선과 공감에 부응하는 큰 의미로 수용되었음을 확인시켜준다.

영어초록

A woodcutter was a man who gathered firewood deep in the mountains. He was depicted in paintings, much like a fisherman, as a figure who symbolized a hermit in nature surrounded by mountains and rivers. A woodcutter began to be described as a small and simple human figure who completed the providence of landscape and nature, and appeared as the main character of narrative figure paintings after the mid-Joseon period. Also, in the late Joseon Dynasty, the scene of a woodcutter toiling himself to carry firewood on his shoulder or back held symbolism in multiple aspects, and its symbolism was displayed in connection with the topic of a painting.
In the old days, one had to ensure the continuous supply of firewood for one and one’s family's survival. When one ran out of firewood, it soon became a worry for the entire family. The scene of a woodcutter toiling himself to carry firewood is thus an expression of a harsh life and conveys the hope of overcoming such hardship. It also represented a government official performing his duties at a public post and projected his wish for a smooth life in his position. Paintings depicted a young woodcutter working hard to carry firewood or Zhu Maichen, who finally succeeded after years of carrying firewood and reading books, in an ancient event that indicates people appreciated the scene of a woodcutter carrying firewood to have the same meaning as leading a diligent life. In the late Joseon Dynasty, Simokjeons, which sold firewood collected from the land, were built along the banks of the Han River. This aspect of society in those days was depicted in a scene of a woodcutter carrying firewood against the backdrop of real scenery.
The images of a woodcutter and the scene of him carrying firewood appeared in paintings as material or sections rather than an independent subject of a painting, but in the late Joseon Dynasty, when the culture of painting production and appreciation was expanded, it was accepted and visualized in various meanings. This is also meaningful in that it shows that the material or scene constituting a part of the painting functions as a visual device that emphasizes the subject of the work and is accepted in a large sense in response to the viewer’s gaze and empathy.
