서양회화 속에 나타난 예수 이미지 변화에 관한 소고(小考) (A Study on the Change of Jesus Image in Western Paintings)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 지난 2천년 동안 서양회화 속에 등장하는 대표적인예수상들의 도상학적 특징과 의미, 그리고 변화를 살펴보는데 있다. 예수상의 변화의 이면에는 각 시대가 예수를 바라보는 패러다임의 변화가 있었기 때문이다. 이를 도상학자 파노프스키는 내재적 의미(intrinsic mean ing)라고 말한다. 그의 주장에 따르면 내재적 의미란 도상의 내면에 놓인원칙들로서 민족, 시대, 계급, 종교 또는 철학적 경향성의 기본적인 태도를 드러내는 것으로, 한 사람의 예술가에 의해 무의식적으로 형상화되어작품으로 집약된 것이다. 이 글은 이러한 파노프스키의 전망을 수용하여역사의 단계마다 그 시대의 구성원들이 공유한 경험과 집단적 정서가 예수의 이미지 속에 어떻게 투영되고 있는가를 살핀다. 가령 4세기부터 카타콤에 그려진 선한목자의 도상은 로마제국의 박해의 와중 속에서 예수를 통해 위로와 희망을 얻고자 했던 초기 기독교도들의 신앙적 염원이 만들어 낸 것이다. 이후 니케아-콘스탄티노플 공의회를 통해 황제의 비호를받았던 기독교회는 예수의 이미지에 황제의 이미지를 투영한다. 이 결과생겨난 것이 판토크라토르의 도상이다. 중세의 성지순례는 성인 숭배와성물숭배라는 새로운 유행을 낳았고, 그 와중에 등장하는 것이 만딜리온과 베로니카의 수건에 새겨진 아키에로포이에토스의 도상이다. 르네상스의 도래와 더불어 시작된 원근법은 예수에 대한 새로운 이미지들을 창출한다. 조토와 미켈란젤로의 프레스코화에 등장하는 예수는 인간의 감정과 육체를 지닌 존재로 묘사된다. 17세기 상업 자본주의 중심이었던 암스테르담에서 활약한 초상화가 렘브란트는 테네브리즘이라는 기법으로인간 예수의 내면 풍경을 연민과 불안이라는 근대적 감정으로 그려낸다. 슈바이처가 지적한 대로 각 시대는 그 시대가 요청하는 새로운 전망으로예수를 새롭게 재현한 것이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the iconographic characteristics, meanings, and changes of representative Jesus figures appearing in Western paintings over the past two thousand years. Behind the change in the image of Jesus, there was a paradigm shift in how each age looked at Jesus. This is what the iconographer, Panofsky calls intrinsic meaning. According to his assertion, intrinsic meaning is the principles placed inside the icon that reveal the basic attitude of a nation, era, class, religion, or philosophical tendency, which is unconsciously embodied by an artist and condensed into a work.
This article accepts Panofsky’s perspective and examines how the experiences and collective emotions shared by members of that era at each stage of history are projected into the image of Jesus. For example, the icon of the Good Shepherd drawn on the catacombs from the 4th century was created by the religious aspirations of early Christians who wanted to find comfort and hope through Jesus in the midst of persecution by the Roman Empire. After that, the Christian Church, which received the emperor’s protection through the Council of Nicaea-Constantinople, projects the image of the emperor onto the image of Jesus. The result of this is the iconography of Pantocrator. The medieval pilgrimage gave birth to a new trend of worship of saints and cults, and the icon of Archieropoietus engraved on the towels of Mandillion and Veronica appeared in the midst of it. Perspective, which began with the advent of the Renaissance, creates new images of Jesus. In the frescoes of Giotto and Michelangelo, Jesus is portrayed as a being with human emotions and a body. Rembrandt, a portrait artist who was active in Amsterdam, the center of commercial capitalism in the 17th century, uses the technique of tenebrism to portray the inner landscape of the human Jesus with modern emotions of compassion and anxiety. As Schweitzer pointed out, each age can be said to be a new image-making of Jesus with the new perspective that the age demands.
Such an attempt gave new life to the image of Jesus, and each age found its own “the Great Stone Face” in Jesus.
To critically reflect on the image of Jesus produced and distributed by Western society over the past two thousand years is to expose the Western-centrism and idealism surrounding the face of Jesus. It is certainly meaningful to reflect on their desires through the images that Western society has painted over the face of Jesus. Because through this, we can reflect on what our age desires for Jesus.
