고전시가 속 권력의 한 양상과 그 문화론적 함의 (Characteristics of Power and its Cultural Implicationin Korean Classical Poetry)

초록

본 연구는 고전 시가 속 권력의 한 양상과 그것의 전변 양상, 그 속에 담긴 문화론적 함의 등을 두루 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 권력은 사회를 구성하는 인간이라면 누구나 갖게 되는 관계적 힘이자 어느 시대에나 존재해 온 것임에도 그간 고전시가 연구에서 권력 논의는 주로 조선조 사대부 시가에만 한정되어 온 경향이 크다. 이러한 문제의식에서 출발한 본 연구는, 권력을 바라보는 상반된 시각들과 개념적 정의를 살펴본 뒤, 권력 논의의 주변부였던 중세시가(고대가요～고려속요)를 대상으로 권력의 일면을 살펴보고, 그것의 전변 과정을 사설시조를 중심으로 한번 짚어 보고자 하였다.
먼저 고대가요에는 권력자에게 복종하게 만드는 신성한 절대 권력, 강제적으로 동조할 수밖에 없도록 하는 불가피한 절대 권력, 이에 대항하는 저항 권력 등이 발견되고, 향가에서는 자발적 동조를 근간으로 하는 절대 권력, 절대적인 듯 실제로는 흔들리던 권력, 주체의 저항으로 흔들려 버린 권력 등이, 고려속요에서는 주체들 간의 이원적인 관계 속에서 제시되는 절대 권력, 목격자의 ‘시선’에 의해 흔들리는 권력 등이 발견된다. 일면 무질서한 듯 보이는 이러한 권력 양상들은 크게 보면 절대 권력과 저항적 권력의 관계 속에서 전자가 우세하고 후자가 부분적으로 나타난다는 특징을 보여준다.
이처럼 절대 권력은 그것이 견고하거나 흔들리거나 불가항력적이거나 간에 대체로 신, 종교적 존재, 임금 등 ‘중심’을 대변하는 힘으로서의 상징성을 지녀왔다면, 저항 권력의 경우는 기존의 지배적인 힘에 대항해 ‘주변’을 대변하는 힘으로서의 상징성을 지니면서, 이후 그 편폭의 확장을 보여준다. 즉 절대 권력의 경우, 기존 시가에서 보이던 권력 양상과 더불어 여성을 타자화 하고 대상화하는 새로운 형태의 권력이 보인다면, 저항 권력의 경우는 평범하고도 일상적 인물들이자 주변부 인물들인 여성과 아이들에 의해 중심부 힘을 향한 저항이 표면화 되는 형태의 모습이 발견된다.
절대 권력과 저항 권력, 이 두 가지 힘은 시가사적 흐름 속에서 상호 길항하는 가운데 나름의 문화적 함의를 드러내기도 한다. 즉 중세를 지배하던 절대 권력은 일상을 작품 속에 詩化하는 데서 균열을 드러내기 시작하며, 그러한 일상이 지배하는 작품은 또 서정-서사의 미학적 긴장, 중심(주체)-탈 중심(탈 주체)의 문제를 의미 있게 제기하면서, 이 시기 문화 권력의 거대한 밑그림을 보여주기 시작한 것이다. 이러한 권력 양상은 이를 작동시키는 이면의 거시 권력 구조와의 관련성 속에서 보다 큰 의미를 지닐 수 있지만, 그 실체성 여부는 차치하고서라도 분명 주류 담론과 주변 담론 간의 미학적 긴장이 이루어지기 시작한 지표는 뚜렷이 볼 수 있다는 점에서 그 의미가 있다.

영어초록

This study is intended to explore on the features of power in Korean Classical Poetry, as well as its transformational patterns and its cultural implications. Although power has existed in every age as a relational force that every human being who is part of a society has experienced, the discussion of power in the classical poetry study tends to be limited mainly to the upper classes’ poetry during Choseon Dynasty. This study which starts from the consciousness of this problem, attempts to examine characteristics and aspects of power in medieval poetry(Ancient songs, Hangga, Goryeosokyo) which has been as the periphery of the power debate and also its transforming process in terms of Saseolsijo after the opposing views and conceptual definitions of power, This study can be summarized as follows.
In Ancient songs, divine absolute power that makes obedience to the power, inevitable absolute power that forced to compromise, and resistance power against it are discovered. In Hangga, absolute power based on voluntary sympathy, power that seemed to be absolute and shaken in reality, power that was shaken by the resistance of the subject are discovered. In Goryeosokyo, absolute power which is presented in a dual relationship between the subjects, power shaken by the gaze of the witness are discovered. These seemingly chaotic aspects of power show characteristics that indicate the absolute power is dominant and resistance power is partial in the relation of two powers.
Likewise, absolute power has been usually symbolized as a power representing the ‘center’ such as a god, a religious being, a king, etc. whether it is robust, shaky or irresistible. In contrast resistance power has been symbolized as a power representing the ‘periphery’ against dominant absolute power. These two powers show the expansion of the slope in the poetry of late Choseon Dynasty, Saseolsijo. In the case of absolute power, a new form of power that is targeted by women appears as well as the power pattern seen in the previous poetry and in the resistance powers, resistance to the central force by ordinary and everyday figures(especially women and children) surfaces.
These two powers, absolute power and resistance power, reveal their cultural implications in mutual antagonism in the historical flow of poetry. In other words, the absolute power that dominated the Middle Ages begins to reveal cracks in the poetization of everyday life and the works dominated by everyday life also have begun to show a huge sketch of cultural power in this period by positive raising the question of center-centeredness and the aesthetic tension of the lyric-narrative.
These aspects of power can be more meaningful in relation to the macro power structure on the back that operates it. However, it is meaningful in that they are clear visible that the aesthetic tension between mainstream discourse and peripheral discourse has begun to be made.
