중국계 미국인 감독 영화 속의 정체성 감정 읽기 (An Analysis of Identity-Related Affect Expression in Chinese-American Movies)

초록

이 논문은 다양한 세대의 중국계 미국인 감독들의 영화를 통시적으로 살펴봄으로써 ‘중국계 미국인’이라는 정체성의 혼종성과 유동성, 그리고 정체성에 수반된 감정을 고찰하고자 한다. 중국계 미국인이라는 정체성은 매우 복합적이고 다층적인 성격을 지닌다. 과거에는 중국계 미국인 감독의 작품 수가 많지 않아 이 정체성이 영화적 공통점으로 작용할 수 있었으나, 최근 다양한 작품들이 등장함에 따라 더 이상 이러한 작품들을 단일한 분류로 간주할 수 없게 되었다. 이 논문은 ‘중국계 미국인’이라는 범주를 조금 더 세분화해서 세대 간의 공통점과 차이점을 찾아보았다. 연구대상은 영화 <조이 럭 클럽(The Joy Luck Club, 1993)>, <페어웰(Farewell, 2019)>, <에브리씽 에브리웨어 올 앳 원스(Everything Everywhere All at Once, 2022)>로 정하였다. 세 편의 작품에서 모녀 갈등과 귀환 서사는 공통된 모티브지만 갈등의 원인, 그리고 귀환하는 방식 및 종점이 각각 다르다. 1세대 감독은 뿌리를 강조하며 자기 정체성을 영화에서 등장한 어머니와 동일시한다. 뿌리 없는 땅에서 생활하면서 느낀 두려움, 또한 이민 2세대의 딸이 원하는 방향으로 가지 않을 때 느끼는 걱정과 불만을 표현하였다. 1.5세대 감독은 자기 정체성을 영화에서 등장한 딸과 동일시한다. 그래서 부모 세대에 대한 의심, 또한 미국에서 생활하면서 느낀 우울함을 표현하였다. 2세대 감독은 이민 세대보다 젊은 세대가 일상에서 느낀 불안한 감정을 표출하였다. 불만, 짜증, 의심, 불안은 누구나 느낄 수 있는 감정이지만 세 편의 영화에서는 어떤 공통적으로 겪은 사건 앞에서 나타난 감정이 아니라, 중국계 엄마와 미국인 딸이라는 특별한 관계 속에서, 즉 고정된 정체성과 유동적 정체성이 충돌할 때 정체성 검열을 하면서 소수적 감정이 발동한다. 세대마다 정체성이 다르고, 수반된 감정도 다르기 때문에 앞으로도 관계의 변화 및 정동의 변화를 주목할 만하다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the hybridity and fluidity of the “Chinese American” identity, as well as the emotions associated with it, by analyzing works by Chinese American filmmakers across various generations in a diachronic manner. The Chinese American identity is highly complex and multifaceted. In the past, the limited number of Chinese American films allowed this identity to function as a cinematic commonality. However, with the recent emergence of a broader array of films, it is no longer possible to classify such works under a single category. This study thus deconstructs the “Chinese American” category to uncover generational commonalities and distinctions. The selected films for this study are The Joy Luck Club (1993), The Farewell (2019), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). While mother-daughter conflicts and return narratives serve as shared motifs across the three films, the causes of these conflicts, as well as the modes and destinations of return, differ in each.
The first-generation filmmakers emphasize roots, identifying their sense of self with the maternal figures in their films. They depict the fears that arise from living in an unfamiliar land and the worry or frustration that emerges when second-generation immigrant daughters do not follow their preferred paths. The 1.5-generation filmmakers, however, identify more closely with the daughters in their narratives, expressing doubts about the parental generation and the melancholy they experience while living in America. The second-generation filmmakers articulate the feelings of anxiety and unease experienced by younger generations in everyday life, contrasting with the more focused anxieties of the immigrant generation.
Although tension, dissatisfaction, frustration, doubt, and anxiety are emotions anyone may feel, these films present them within the unique context of relationships between Chinese mothers and their American daughters. These emotions, often referred to as “minority emotions”, emerge when fixed identities clash with fluid ones. As identity and its associated emotions differ across generations, the evolving dynamics of relationships and affect warrant further exploration in future studies.
