고전 읽기와 소집단 토의 수업의 역사성과 그 비판적 수용 －A대학의 고전 읽기와 소집단 토의 수업을 중심으로－ (Historicity and Critical Acceptance of Classics Reading and Small Group Discussion Classes－Focusing on classics reading and small group discussion classes at University A)

초록

4차 산업 혁명기에 접어든 현대 사회는 분화된 영역의 전문성보다는 인간에 대한 이해와 더불어 여러 영역 간 이해와 통섭, 융합의 필요성이 강조되는 사회이다. 그렇기 때문에 비판적 사고, 소통능력의 함양, 다양성의 미학 등을 강화하는 인문학적 교육의 필요성이 커지고 있다. 이에 발맞추어 2010년을 기점으로 한국의 여러 대학들에서는 인성함양과 의사소통능력을 배양할 수 있는교양강좌의 필요성을 제기하고 그 중심에 고전 읽기와 토의(토론)을 두어 그에 맞는 수업 모델을구축하고 있다.
하지만 이보다 40여 년 앞선 1969년부터 그동안의 교양교육에 대한 방만한 운영에 대한 반성과교양교육의 궁극적 목표인 ‘전인적 인간형성’으로의 회귀를 ‘자유학예’ 정신에 입각하여 ‘고전 읽기와 소규모 집단 토의’의 내용으로 진행한 A대학이 있다. 해당 대학은 해당 수업의 모델을 구축하기위해 약 10년의 기간을 수업에 대한 탐색과 탐구, 실행과 수정의 연속으로 진행한다. A대학은 먼저교양교육의 목표를 이루기 위한 내용으로 고전의 가치에 집중했으며 그 이후, 운영방식에 대해서는 미국의 세인트 존스 칼리지의 방식을 벤치마킹하여 A대학 실정에 맞도록 모델을 구축한다. 한 수업 당 제한 인원이 13명이었고 해당 수업은 교양필수로 3개 학년 전체에게 의무적으로 부과되어약 50 여권의 고전독서를 읽고 토의를 통해 소통능력을 함양하는 것은 물론이고 고전 도서에 대한이해와 사고력의 확장 및 다양성을 구축하게 된다.
50년 동안 지속된 해당 수업을 통시적 관점에서 관찰했을 때, 해당 수업은 여러 원인에 따른교과 개편을 통해 강좌의 명칭, 도서영역의 구분, 적용 대상에 따라 크고 작은 변화를 겪는다. 그변화 중 가장 큰 논의의 대상은 해당 수업의 절대적인 축소화 양상이다. 이러한 축소기조의 원인이해당 교과 내부의 부정적 요인에서 비롯된 문제라기보다는 교과 외적인 다양한 요인에 따라 발생된 현상임을 분석할 수 있었다.
본 논문은 A대학 해당 교과운용에 대한 비판을 목적으로 한 것이 아니다. 사실, 하나의 교과를개발하여 그것이 50년을 이어가는 경우는 극히 제한적이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 A대학은 해당 강좌를 지금까지 이어가고 있다. 그럴 수 있는 이유는 고전의 가치와 의사소통의 효과성에 대한 A대학구성원들의 공감과 인식에 있다. 그만큼 고전독서와 토의(토론)는 인성함양과 소통능력함양에 따른 사고력 확장에 적합한 내용과 방식임을 의미한다. 따라서 본 논문에 서술된 A대학의 고전 읽기와 소집단 토의 수업 모델 및 운영과정을 통해 유사교과를 시작하거나 진행하는 여러 대학들에게하나의 모델로 참고가 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

The modern society, which has entered the era of the 4th industrial revolution, is a society where the need for understanding, consilience, and convergence of various fields along with understanding of human beings is emphasized rather than expertise in differentiated areas. Therefore, there is a growing need for humanities education that strengthens critical thinking, fostering communication skills, and the aesthetics of diversity. In line with the foregoing, starting in 2010, various universities in South Korea raised the need for culture classes that can cultivate character and communication skills, placed classics reading and discussion (debate) at the center of the classes, and have been constructing class models that fit the foregoing.
However, from 1969, about 40 years ahead of the foregoing, University A used regrets on the careless operation of culture education thus far and return to ‘the formation of holistic human beings’, which is the ultimate goal of culture education, as the contents of ‘reading classics and small group discussions’ based on the spirit of ‘free arts and sciences’. To construct a model of the relevant class, the university continued the exploration, investigation, implementation, and modification of the class for about 10 years.
University A first focused on the value of classics as a content to achieve the goal of culture education, and there after benchmarked the method of St.
John's College for the operation method to construct the model to fit the actual state of University A. The number of students per class was limited to 13, and the relevant class was culture mandatory compulsorily imposed on all three grades so that the students can cultivate communication capability as well as understanding classic books, expanding thinking skills, and constructing diversity by reading about 50 classic books and discussing on the books.
When the relevant class that continued for 50 years was observed from a diachronic perspective, it could be seen that the relevant class underwent small and large changes in the name of the course, division of book areas, and the subjects of application through curriculum reorganization due to many causes. Among the changes, the subject of the biggest discussion is the absolute reduction of the class. It was possible to analyze that the cause of the basis of reduction as such was various extracurricular factors rather than negative factors within the relevant subject.
This paper is not intended to criticize the management of the relevant subject by University A. In fact, there are extremely few cases where a developed subject was continued for 50 years. Nevertheless, University A has continued the course until now. The reason for the foregoing is the sympathy and recognition of the members of University A about the value of classics and the effectiveness of communication. This means that classics reading, and discussion (debate) are contents and methods suitable for the expansion of thinking skills according to the cultivation of characters and communication skills. Therefore, it is hoped that the classics reading, and small group discussion class model and operation process of University A described in this paper will be referred to as a model by many universities that are starting or implementing similar subjects.
