디지털 패브리케이션을 이용한 파빌리온의 표현 특성 연구 (A Study on Expressive Characteristics of Pavilion Applying Digital Fabrication)

초록

(연구 배경 및 목적) 디지털 기술의 발전은 기존의 공간 구축 개념에서 벗어나 유연한 사고와 효율적이고 유기적인 형태 생성을 가능하게 하였다. 특히 디지털 패브리케이션은 디지털 데이터의 간편한 수정과 관리가 자유로우며 자연의 생성 원리를 적용한 창의적인 형태를 구축하는데 용이하다. 또한 체계적이고 통합적인 프로세스로 작업의 효율성 향상 및 경제성이 극대화되며 기존의 재료들은 새롭게 표현되어 그 역할과 의미가 확장되고 있다. 이렇듯 경제적 이점뿐만 아니라 공간디자인의 새로운 패러다임을 제시하고 있는 것 이다. 하지만 아직까지는 디지털 패브리케이션에 대한 이해와 정보가 부족하며 실재적 공간을 구축하는 데 많은 제약이 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 문헌과 사례분석을 통해 디지털시대에 디지털 패브리케이션의 역할과 중요성을 밝히고자 한다. (연구방법) 문헌을 통해 디지털 패브리케이션의 개념을 정의하고 본 연구의 이해를 돕기 위해 디지털 패브리케이션의 프로세스를 세분화해 정리한다. 프로세스의 단계별 특성을 분석하고 선행연구 분석을 통해 파빌리온의 표현 특성을 도출하여 사례분석 틀을 만든다. 이를 바탕으로 디지털 패브리케이션의 특성을 검증하기 위해 디지털 패브리케이션이 본격적으로 사용된 2000년 이후의 파빌리온을 선정하여 공간적 특성, 형태적 특성, 재료적 특성으로 나누어 분석하고자 한다. (결과) 그 결과 디지털 패브리케이션은 총 5단계로 분류할 수 있었고 CAD/CAM 기능이 가능한 소프트웨어를 사용할 때 3단계로 축소되며 모든 과정이 유기적으로 관리되는 특징이 있다. 제작 방식에 따라 크게 절삭 방식, 적층 방식, 성형 방식으로 분류할 수 있으며 이를 통해 가공된 재료는 의미가 확장되어 사용자에게 새로운 경험과 느낌을 전달하는 매개적 역할을 한다. 선행연구를 통해 현대의 파빌리온을 분석한 결과 공간의 개방성, 형태의 역동성과 유기성, 재료의 물질성과 비물질성의 표현 특성을 나타내고 있음을 알 수 있다. 문헌을 통한 디지털 패브리케이션의 특성을 검증하기 위해 사례분석한 결과 주로 안과 밖의 구분이 모호하며 바닥, 벽, 천정의 기준이 허물어진 형태로 비정형적이며 역동성을 나타내고 있다. 또한 유기적인 표피를 가지고 있으며 그동안 시도하지 못했던 표현 특성을 나타내고 있다. (결론) 문헌과 사례 분석을 통해 연구한 디지털 패브리케이션은 우리에게 새로운 프로세스 환경과 공간 디자인의 새로운 패러다임을 부여했음을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 아직까지도 많은 문제점과 제약으로 실험적인 단계에 머무르고 있다. 앞으로 합리적이고 창의적인 공간을 구축하기 위해 디지털 패브리케이션의 개념과 특성을 이해하고 프로세스를 체계적으로 관리하는 능력을 갖추어야 할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) The advancement of digital technology leads to flexible thinking and creation of both efficient and systematic forms, deviating from the conventional concept of spatial formation. Especially, digital fabrication allows for convenient modification and control of digital data. It generates creative forms by applying the principles of natural creation. In addition, it results in systematic and integrated processes, improves efficiency at work, and maximizes economic feasibility. Recently, digital fabrication has allowed materials to be rendered innovatively , resulting in an expansion of the role and meaning. This paves the way for a new paradigm of spatial design and the related economic benefits. However, we do not have adequate comprehension and knowledge of digital fabrication and face many constraints in building a real space. Therefore, this study highlights the role and importance of digital fabrication in the digital age through previous literature and case analysis. (Methodology) The concept of digital fabrication was defined through previous literature analysis. The process of digital fabrication was divided into different categories and summarized to facilitate the understanding of the concepts in this study. By analyzing the characteristics of each step in the process and determining the expressive characteristics of digital pavilion, this study prepared the framework for a case analysis. Subsequently, to verify the characteristics of digital fabrication, this study conducted separate analyses in terms of spatial, formative, and material characteristics by selecting the pavilion introduced after 2000, which wasa the watershed year for the full-fledged use of digital pavilion. (Results) Based on the results of this study, digital fabrication was divided into five stages, which reduced to three stages when software providing CAD/CAM functions was used. It was seen that all processes were managed systematically. Hardware was broadly classified into cutting, lamination, and molding method based on the type of production method. Materials processed precisely underwent semantic expansion through various production techniques, offering a new experience and feeling to users. The previous literature analysis of contemporary pavilion revealed openness, dynamicity, and systemicity of form, as well as expressive characteristics of materiality and non-materiality of materials. The results of the case analysis, conducted to verify the characteristics of digital fabrication through literature analysis, showed that the division between inside and outside was unclear and that the standard of floor, wall, and ceiling was atypical and dynamic in collapsed form . In addition, the pavilion had organic surface and manifested expressive characteristics that had not been seen thus far. (Conclusion) The results of this study on digital fabrication, investigated through literature and case analysis, suggested that digital fabrication gave rise to a new process environment and a new paradigm of spatial design. However, this study was still in an experimental stage because of numerous problems and restrictions. To build a logical and creative space, it is necessary to understand the concept and characteristics of digital fabrication and develop the ability to manage the process systematically.
