네이션 안에서 네이션을 벗어나기-『상상의 공동체』를 둘러싼 물음들- (Getting out of Nation in the Nation -Reflections on the Imagined Communities-)

초록

본고는 이미 민족주의 연구의 고전으로 자리매김 된 베네딕트 앤더슨의 『상상의 공동체』를 ‘정념’의 텍스트로 독해하고자 하는 한 시도이다. 이는 이 텍스트를 민족주의의 기원에 대한 사회과학적 이론서가 아닌, 혁명이라는 꿈의 잔해 속에서 미래를 다시 확보하고자 하는 현실에 대한 앤더슨의 실천적 개입을 전유하면서, 포스트식민주의, 혹은 변증법적 이미지에 대한 사유들을 통해 앤더슨이 처해 있던 이론적 곤경(predicament)을 돌파하려는 기획이기도 하다.
특히 본고에서는 이러한 작업을 위한 핵심적 키워드로, 균질적이고 공허한 시간(homogeneous, empty time), 귀기서린 국민적 상상력(ghostly national imaginings), 네이션의 선성(the goodness of nation), 역사의 천사(angel of history)라는 네 개념에 대한 사상사적 검토를 시도한다. 그리고 마지막으로 전후 일본에서 지난 전쟁의 사자들을 ‘정결한 영령’으로 만들어내는 야스쿠니신사의 제사, 그리고 국민들의 희생을 전후 번영의 초석으로 자리매김하려는 정부의 공식 수사를 거부하며, 전장에서 스러져간 병사들 개개인의 삶과 죽음의 의미를 천착해간 오오카 쇼헤이의 작업의 의미를 묻고자 한다.
네이션의 선성을 포기하지 않으면서 전쟁 체험에 대한 성찰 속에서 네이션 안에서 네이션의 경계를 해체해나가는 하나의 가능성을 추구했다는 점에서, 오오카의 작업은 국민국가의 기념비문화, 받들어진 전사자와 자신들의 순교자들과의 사이에 이음매 없는 연속성을 추구하는 상징적 애도를 거부하면서, 그리고 무명전사이자 혁명전사였던 그들의 죽음이 무엇이었는가를 되묻는 것이었다. 그리고 이러한 시도야말로, 네이션을 구원해내는 하나의 이미지(소망-이미지)를 찾아내고자 했던 앤더슨의 작업, 나아가 죽어가는 자의 권위에서 모든 이야기, 모든 경험의 증언을 궁극적으로 재가하는 권위의 원천을 찾고자 했던 벤야민적 사유 전통의 계승이자, ‘전후’라는 경험이 우리에게 주는 유산이기도 할 것이다.

영어초록

This essay is an attempt to read Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities, which has already become a classic of study of nationalism, in the text of “passion”. This work appropriates Anderson's practical intervention in the reality in the attempt to regain the future in the remnants of dreams rather than simply regarding his work as a theory on the origin of nationalism. Furthermore, in the current essay I attempted to break through the theoretical predicament Anderson had faced by exploring its implications on post-colonialism or images of dialectics.
Specifically, I try to investigate the above-mentioned issue by focusing on the four key words, namely, “homogeneous, empty time”, “ghostly national imaginings”, “the goodness of nation”, “angel of history”, which together characterize the work by Anderson. Furthermore, I apply the four key words in bringing a new light to the work of Shōhei Ōoka. Shōhei Ōoka’s work is characterized by his critical perspective on why individual soldiers drafted to the Imperial Japanese troops had to die meaninglessly and his defiance of post-war years’ memorial service at the Yasukuni shrine, which honors the dead of past war as "glorious spirits" that willingly gave their life for the sake of the nation, as well as the Japanese government’s euphemistic reference to the sacrifice of the fallen soldiers as the cornerstone of prosperity experienced in the postwar Japan.
In pursuit of a possibility to dismantle the boundary of nation inside the nation in the reflection of the war experience without giving up the goodness of Nation, Ōoka attempted to refute the symbolic mourning of the monumental culture sponsored by the nation-state, which pursued the seamless continuity between the national heroes and their martyrs. Instead, Ōoka explored personal meanings of death to soldiers and revolutionaries whose suffering was unilaterally imposed by the Japanese military and government during the war. The main contribution of the current essay is to reinterpret the work by Ōoka and explore its linkage to the work by Anderson, who sought to find an image that tried to save the nation, and to the work of W. Benjamin, who sought the source of authority to ascribe all the stories and testimonies of all experience from the authority of the dead.
