「歲時風謠」에 나타난 세시풍속의 서술방식과 수용 양상 - 4대 명절을 중심으로 - (The description method and the acceptance aspect of the manners and customs in Sesipungyo -mainly about four big festive days-)

초록

본고는 澗松居士 柳晩恭(1793~1869)의 「歲時風謠」에 나타난 세시풍속의 서술방식과 수용양상에 대해서 고찰한 내용이다. 「세시풍요」는 1년 동안 세시풍속으로 전해지는 우리 민족의 고유한 생활과 삶의 현장을 7언 절구라는 짧은 편폭 속에 200수의 월령체로 담아낸 서울 풍속사의 집대성이라 할 수 있는 작품이다. 이러한 작품들은 시로써 민풍을 살피고 백성을 교화한다는 『詩經』의 ‘以詩補史’ 정신과 ‘譜風土’라는 악부시의 전통에서 비롯된 것이다. 이처럼 조선후기에 우리 고유의 생활 습속과 인정의 세태를 다룬 작품들이 다량 창작된 이유는 민족의식의 자각과 서민의식의 성장이라는 시대적 배경과 함께 창조적이며 역동적인 문예활동이 활발하게 전개되던 문예부흥기였기때문이다.
이 작품의 구성과 서술 방식은 세시풍속을 다룬 일반적인 紀俗詩들처럼 특정 세시의 풍속을 시화하되 세시풍속의 한 특징적인 장면을 그려내고 이어서 이에 대한 작가의 느낌을 피력하는 방식으로 구성되어 있다. 그 이유는 칠언절구라는 제한된 작품에 특정의 세시풍속을 묘사하기 위해서는 풍속이 연행되는 핵심적 장면만을 포착하여 이를 선명하게 부각시키는 방법이 효과적이며, 이러한 전개 방식은 絶句의 轉句에서 시상을 전환하는 先景後情과도 관련이 있기 때문이다. 하지만 특정의 세시풍속을 충실히 전승하기 위해서 민중의 이야기를 작가의 감정 개입 없이, 행해지는 연행의 실상을 다만 단순하면서도 평면적으로 묘사하고 있는 경우도 많은 비중을 차지하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 풍속의 전승으로 인한 민중들의 소박한 삶의 실상에 대해서만 묘사하고자 이를 작가 특유의 유머스러운 감각과 筆致로써 그린 작품들도 있다.
이렇게 작가는 세시풍속을 수용하되 우리 고유문화에 대한 가치를 중요하게 여기면서 민중들의 소박한 믿음과 기원의 내용들을 구체적이면서도 사실적으로 생생하게 보여주고 있다. 이는 민중들의 생활상에 대한 작가의 따듯한 애정과 연민의 감정이 자리잡고 있어야 가능했던 것이며, 문학을 통해 우리 민족의식을 고취시키려했던 의도의 발현이었다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 우리 민중들의 진솔하고도 소박한 삶의 모습들을 형상화한 「세시풍요」와 같은 세시풍속시들은 우리 고유문화의 가치를 새롭게 반영했다는 면에서 조선후기 한시 작풍의 한 특징으로 그 위상을 정립할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This is a study on the description method and the acceptance aspect of the manners and customs in Sesipungyo by Kansonggeosa Mangong Yu (1793~1869). Sesipungyo is a compilation of the history of the manners and customs in Seoul. It contains 200 monthly pieces in the form of seven characters quatrain. They describe the scenes of life and living native to Korean people who hand down from generation to generation them as manners and customs for a year. Such custom poetry as Dohasesikisogshi by Seokmo Hong dates from the tradition of Akbu poetry as ‘Bopoongto’ and the spirit of ‘reinforce history by poetry’ in the Book of Odes in order to watch over public manners and educate people. The reason why a large quantity of works, dealing the customs of life native to Korea and the manners of the times, were made during the latter part of Choseon is that it was the period of renaissance when creative literary activity developed vigorously with a background at that time such as the awareness of national consciousness and the growth of mass consciousness.
As for the composition and description method of this work, author, like the usual customs writing poetry dealing with manners and customs, versifies a distinctive scene of the custom at a particular season and then expresses his impression. The reason is that it is effective to capture just one essential scene of a custom being performed and describe the scene clearly in order to put a particular custom into such restricted form as seven characters quatrain, and that unfolding procedure of this sort is related to ‘scene first sentiment follow’ in which poetical thoughts change at converting phrase of quatrain. But a case, where the actual circumstances of a custom being performed are presented simply and flatly without the intervention of author's sentiment, also hold much weight in order to transmit exactly a particular custom. And besides there are poems written with humourous sense and touch of author's own in order to describe the real state of life of naive populace due to the transmission of manners and customs.
The author accepts the manners and customs like this, and holds the value of native culture important. So he describes the substance of people's humble belief and prayer realistically, graphically and vividly. This is possible only when author has affection and compassion onaffectopular circumstances, and is the manifestation of the intention of inspiring our national consciousness by meanf peoplcumsture. Therefore the poetry dealing with the seasonal customs and manners like Sesipungyo which gives shape to the state of real and plain life of common people can be placed in a feature of the sndle of Chinese poem writing in respect that the poetry manifest the value of our native culture.
