영국 튜더 시대 엘리자베스 1세의 교육 정책 (The Tudor Dynasty in Queen Elizabeth Ⅰ of the Educational Policy)

초록

엘리자베스 1세가 받았던 인문주의 교육이 16세기 튜더 시대 여성들에게주었던 영향과 플라톤과 마키아벨리 사상이 엘리자베스 1세의 정치와 교육에어떠한 영향을 주었는지 연구해보았다.
영국의 르네상스 인문주의가 확립되고 인문주의 교육이 활발하게 이루어졌던 곳은 왕실이었다. 상류층 여성들 사이에서의 교육은 기본적인 교육 이외에 음악, 자수와 같이 여성으로서 교양을 쌓을 수 있는 교육이 이루어졌다.
하지만 그것은 극소수였고 남성들이 받았던 고급과정의 교육에서는 배제되었다.
그러나 이러한 기존의 교육과는 달리 헨리 8세 시대 이후에는 여성들도남성들이 받았던 것과 같은 교육과정으로 인문주의 교육을 받을 수 있었다. 튜더 시대 여성들은 인문주의 교육을 통해 지적 자산을 이용하여 자신들이속한 계층의 남성들이 정치적·사회적 주도권을 잡고 지배계층을 형성하는데 적극적으로 협력하였다.
튜더 시대 왕실 여성 중 인문주의 교육의 혜택을 크게 받았던 사람은 엘리자베스 1세였다. 토머스 모어(Thomas More)가 주창하여 튜더 왕실과 상류층에 파급시킨 인문주의 교육으로 인하여 최고의 교육을 받을 수 있었다.
엘리자베스 1세가 여성 군주로서 성공할 수 있었던 요인 중 하나는 그녀가받았던 인문주의 교육과 그 교육에 헌신하였던 엘리자베스 1세 자신의 열정이다. 인문주의 교육을 통해서 접했던 플라톤과 마키아벨리 정치사상은 그녀가통치자로서 자신감과 고도의 정치적 전략들을 성공할 수 있도록 해준 이론적근거이자 중요한 기반이 되었다.
플라톤은 『국가(Politeia)』에서 통치자 독신의 의무와 정치에서 남녀 간의평등을 강조하며 철인 왕이라는 이상적인 군주상을 제시하였다. 그의 사상은엘리자베스가 독신주의를 선택하고 통치자로서의 목표를 설정하는데 커다란영감을 주었다.
엘리자베스 1세는 플라톤이 주장하였던 철인 왕의 이상 정치와 이에 따르는 역사적인 명성도 추구하였지만 다른 한 편으로는 16세기 동시대인으로현실적인 정치론을 펼쳤던 마키아벨리의 충고도 간과하지 않았다.
엘리자베스 1세가 철인 왕의 이상 정치를 표방함으로써 평생 독신을 유지하였다. 그 결과 후계자를 확보하지 못하여 불안한 정치 상황이 초래되었고, 그녀의 통치 기간 내내 정치적 음모와 모반들이 계속되었다. 이러한 상황에서그녀는 마키아벨리적 실용주의를 선택하였다. 이후 마키아벨리의 사상을 정치적·경제적·외교적인 난제들을 해결하기 위한 국가 운용 전략에 적용했다. 이론의 정치적 전략이 플라톤의 영향을 받았다면, 실용적으로 운용 전략에 영향을 주었던 것은 마키아벨리의 사상이었겠다고 할 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 대학의 중요성을 강조하고 인문주의 교육을 적극적으로 실시하여 여러교육 정책들을 장려하였다.

영어초록

This thesis reviews humanism education that influenced the 16th century Tudor dynasty females through the growth period of Elizabeth Ⅰ, and finds out what influence the thoughts of Plato and Machiavelli had on the politics and education of Elizabeth Ⅰ and her efforts to unify GBR In domestic studies so far, the focus has been on her political aspect while there have been few studies and definitions on the humanism education that underlay the background of her despotical dominion over GBR.
It was in the royal court that GBR’s renaissance humanism was established, and humanism education was actively carried out. Education enabling high class females to gain refinement such as music, embroidery etc as well as basic education was done, which was, however, just for a handful of them, and they were excluded from the high level education males gained. But, contrary to the established education, since Henry the 8th, females could gain the same courses of humanism education that males had gained.
Females of the Tudor Dynasty actively collaborated for males belonging to their class to take the political/social initiative, utilizing their intellectual assets through humanism education.
Elizabeth Ⅰ was among females of Tudor Dynasty royal families who had got the greatest benefits. She was able to get the top class education thanks to the More-insisted humanism education spread into Tudor royal court and the high class.
One of the factors that made her a successful queen was the humanism education she had got plus her dedicated zeal for the education. Plato & Machiavelli’s thoughts she had touched through the education became a theoretical basis and vital base forming her self-confidence as ruler and leading her highly political tactics to success.
Plato in his 『Nation(Politeia)』 presented an idealistic image of ruler, empathizing rulers’ obligation of celibacy and gender equality in politics.
His thought had greatly inspired her choice of celibacy and decision of political goals as ruler.
On one hand, she pursued after Plato-insisted ideal politics of philosopher king and subsequent historical fame followed by it, on the other she didn’t overlook important advice of Machiavelli, her contemporary, who unfolded reality-based politics.
Her declaration of celibacy, living unmarried lifetime with no successor confirmed, caused unstable political situation, due to which, there happened political conspiracies and betrayals one after another, amid which the method she chose was the Machiavellian pragmatism.
Elizabeth Ⅰ applied his thought to her national management tactics to tackle political/economic/diplomatic dilemmas. It may be safely said that her theory on political tactics had been affected by Plato, while her pragmatism on national management tactics had been affected by Machiavelli.
During her dominion, GBR equipped herself with strong governmental system again, and education policies were implemented as a tool to lay the frame of powerful monarchy. She rearranged and efficiently controled the established ruling class, using the tool of religion. Also she empathized the importance of universities that bore the long heritage of Medieval Europe, encouraging various educational policies. Eventually Elizabeth Ⅰ became a symbol of all glories as ‘ethereal Queen’, and GBR’s Absolutism reached its peak.
