헨리 8세의 개혁과 수도원 해산 (Henry VIII’s Reformation and the Dissolution of the Monasteries)

This study shows that the dissolution of monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII’s in England and Wales was not a thoroughly planned project as shown by analysis of the repeated dissolution of the monasteries before 1536, activities of royal visitation and Compendium Compertorum, and an analysis of the legislation process of the act of dissolution of the lesser monasteries and its contents.
From January 1535 when Henry VIII appointed Cromwell vicar-general until the summer royal visitation began, it was not clear what kind of plan and intention Henry VIII had, if any. Though the dissolution of monasteries was considered a means to secure the government funding, no detailed scenario for the dissolution had been drawn. Even in the act of the dissolution of the lesser monasteries in 1536, Henry VIII did not imply a wide scope at all. Such an incoherent course for the dissolutions of the lesser and greater monasteries was caused not only by conflict amongst the king, Cromwell and the council but also unpredicted events such as the Pilgrimage of Grace and voluntary disposition of property by monasteries.
It is assumed that whole-scale dissolution was considered when carrying out the dissolution of the lesser monasteries. However, if there was a definite plan for to do so,Cromwell and the king would not necessarily have moved numbers of monks to other monasteries or compensated them with annuities. Neither Henry VIII nor the government had a clear blueprint for the total dissolution of the monasteries, rather the wholescale dissolution of the monasteries was eventually reached by dint of a poorly organized process with only short term goals.
