이 글은 <성현공숙렬기>의 여성 주동인물 주숙렬의 시비(侍婢)인 열영, 상운 그리고 매송의 양상과 역할 그리고 그들의 행동이 의미하는 바를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. <성현공숙렬기>는 여성 주동인물인 주숙렬의 활약이 두드러진 작품이다. 주숙렬은 시어머니인 여 부인의 계략으로 임부(林府)에서 출거되어 도로에 유리한다. 이 시기에 등장하는 것이 열영, 상운, 매송과 같은 시비들이다.
이들은 여타의 고전 대하소설에 형상화된 여성 주동인물의 시비와 비교했을 때에 그 등장과 임명 과정이 자세하게 묘사되어 있다는 점에서나 스스로 비혼의 의지를 명확히 표출하고 있다는 점에서 그 차이가 두드러진다. 이러한 특징을 지닌 열영, 상운, 매송은 주숙렬이 시가에서 쫓겨나 남복(男服)을 하고 전쟁에 출전하는 시기에 주로 활약하는데, 이 시기는 주숙렬이 가장 큰 고난을 겪는 시기라고 할 수 있다. 특징적인 점은 주숙렬이 고난을 겪는 시기와 시비들의 등장과 퇴장의 시기가 일치한다는 점이다. 주숙렬의 고난을 해결하기 위한 조력자로 등장했음을 시사하는 부분이라 하겠다.
주숙렬이 고난을 겪는 이 시기에 시비들은 관 부인과 태허 법사의 대리인으로 고난을 겪는 주숙렬을 도와 문제를 해결한다. 이때 시비들의 역할이 나뉘게 되는데, 열영은 관 부인의 대리인인 내부형 조력자로 주숙렬의 정신적 지지자로서의 역할을 한다. 그에 반해 상운과 매송은 태허 법사의 대리인인 외부형 조력자로 전장에 직접 나서서 물리적 조력을 한다. 이렇듯 그들은 주숙렬을 고난에서 구해내고 전장의 중심에 서서 갈등을 적극적으로 해결하는 조력자적인 성격을 명확히 표출한다.
세 시비의 조력자적 성격이 부각된 이유로는 주숙렬의 영웅화(英雄化)를 들 수 있다. 주숙렬은 일반적 여성영웅에 비하면 의지와 능력 모두 상대적으로 우수하지 않다. 참전 상황으로 알 수 있듯이 영웅으로서의 의지도 일반적 여성영웅과는 사뭇 다르다. 하지만 극적인 문제 해결을 위해 영웅화된 양상으로 서사에 등장하게 된다. 이런 영웅으로서의 주숙렬의 한계를 보충해주고 있는 것이 바로 시비들이다. 시비들은 조력자의 대리인으로 주숙렬의 한계와 능력을 보충해주는 역할을 하고 있는 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to disclose the meaning of the aspect, roles, and their behaviors from Yeolyeong(열영), Sang-un(상운), and Maesong(매송) who is Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬)’s maid as a heroine in Seonghyeongongsukryeolgi(성현공숙렬기).
Seonghyongsongsukryolgi(성현공숙렬기) is a novel concentrating marital conflicts, brothers' conflicts, and mother and son conflicts centered on the male protagonist Lim-Heerin(임희린). Along with that part, Seonghyongsongsukryolgi(성현공숙렬기) is a work showing the behavior of the heroine Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬). Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) was kicked out of the lim's family by his mother-in-law, Mrs.Yeo(여 부인). During that time, Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) is in trouble, but maids help her to solve the problem.
At this point, the roles of maids were divided. Yeolyeong(열영) is an internal helper and becomes an substitute for Mrs.Kwan(관 부인). Yeolyeong(열영) acts as a spiritual supporter of Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬). Sang-un(상운) and Maesong(매송), on the other hand, are substitute of Taeheo Monk(태허 법사). They are external helpers who go directly to the battlefield to help Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬). In this way, they save Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) from difficulty. And they clearly express their characteristics as helpers who seriously deal with conflicts at the center of the battlefield.
Since her expulsion from Lim's family, Yeolyeong(열영), Sang-un(상운) and Maesong(매송) had been along with Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) until she made a great attribution to the war changing her name as Ju-Hyunsu(주현수) and dressing male attire up. They temporarily appear in the hardest time of Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬), then show up again to be supporters of Seol-Seongyoum(설성염), the daughter-in law of Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬), as maids by Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) in a successive work titled as Limsisamdaerok(임씨삼대록).
Likewise, is the heroization of Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) for the reason of notably supportive characters from three maids. The will of Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) is different to general heroines given that taking part in the war. But she comes on the story as the heroized aspect to solve dramatic problems. So, are the maids supplementing the limitation and the ability of heorized Ju-Sukryeol(주숙렬) as helpers.
It is not affirmable to say that the appearances of maids who actually lived in the age of the work have been embodied without any creation. Nevertheless, it is not difficult to infer that the life of the maids must have been reflected in any form of work. The activism of maids in many classic novels, and the interpretation of their relationship with their owners, will begin with this inference. Because the active appearance of maids is relevant to the desire of readers who enjoyed classical novels whether it was real or fictional. It will be future aims to study the various aspects and meanings of the maids and the way it has been read by readers in the age.
