‘섬의 인문학’ 담론－섬과 바다의 일체성과 양면성의 문제－ (On ‘Island Humanities’ : The unity and duality of the relationship between the island and the sea)

초록

일반적으로 섬의 개념은 공간의 규모나 법률의 목적성에 의해 규정되곤 하지만, 본고는 소통성과 고립성이라는 섬의 양면적 속성에 중점을 두면서 인문학적 섬 개념을 제기한다.
섬은 바다에 의해 규정되곤 한다. 바다를 교류의 길로 인식하면 섬은 바닷길을 매개해 주는 소통의 징검다리로 간주된다. 바다를 장애물로 인식하면 섬은 그 바다에 의해 단절되는 고립공간으로 간주된다. 여기에 섬과 바다의 일체성과 양면성이 찾아진다. 섬과 바다가 하나의 유기체로 작동하니 일체성인 것이고, 섬과 바다의 유기체가 소통성과 고립성이라는 양면의 속성을 내포하니 양면성이다.
섬과 바다의 양면성은 우리 역사에서 극명하게 나타난다. 고려시대까지는 소통성이 두드러졌던 반면, 조선시대에는 고립성이 두드러졌다. 결과적으로 전자는 ‘문명’의 흔적을 섬에 남겼고, 후자는 ‘민족문화의 원형’을 섬에 남겼다. ‘섬의 인문학’은 섬과 바다의 이러한 양면적 속성을 모두 포괄할 필요가 있다. 바다의 배타성과 공유성은 ‘섬의 인문학’이 유념해야 할 또 다른 섬의 양면성을 내포한다.
섬을 통해 바다를 쟁취하려는 ‘섬 분쟁’의 분출은 바다에 대한 배타적 소유욕에서 나온다. 바다를 인류 공유재산으로 인식한 ‘파르도(Pardo)주의’는 섬에 대한 관심을 공유의 세계로 이끈다. 이렇듯 바다의 배타성과 공유성이 섬과 연동된다는 것은, 섬과 바다의 일체성을 다시 한번 확인해 준다.
결국 섬과 바다의 일체성과 양면성은, 섬이 경계와 탈경계의 변곡점에 위치함을 시사한다.

영어초록

In general, an island is described according to the scale of land area or the dictates of law, but in humanities, an island tends to be described according to the duality of its nature, communication and isolation.
The nature of an island also tends to be determined by the sea surrounding it. If the sea is perceived as a passage of exchange, the island could easily be regarded as a bridge for communication through sea routes. If the sea is perceived as an obstacle, the island could be regarded as an isolated space, cut off from the outside world by the sea. In this context, we can discuss the ‘unity’ and ‘duality’ of the relationship between the island and the sea. The term ‘unity’ refers to how the island and the sea coexist as a single organic being, while ‘duality’ implies that this single organic being embodies two opposing concepts: communication and isolation.
The duality of the relationship between the island and the sea is dramatically evident in Korean history. Before the Goryeo period, the relationship between the island and the sea was characterized by communication, while in the Choseon period, isolation was more prominent. This difference explains why Goryeo left traces of its civilization on the islands, whereas Choseon left only archetypes of Korean culture. ‘Island humanities’ contains the duality of the relationship between the island and the sea.
The exclusivity and co-ownership of the sea is related to another aspect of the island that ‘island humanities’ must recognize. The increasing number of conflicts over the ownership of islands is the result of the desire to claim exclusive ownership of the sea through the ownership of islands. Arvid Pardo’s belief that the sea belongs to all of humanity should guide our interest in islands to an understanding of the importance of a world of co-ownership. The fact that the sea’s duality of communication and isolation is interlocked with its islands serves to confirm the unity of the island and the sea.
In conclusion, the unity of the island and the sea and the duality of the relationship between the two imply that the island is located at an inflectionpoint between boundary and trans-boundary.
