세친의 극미(paramāṇu)해석의 변화와 12처(āyatana)설의 상관성에 대하여 (The Relativity of Vasubandhu's Philosophical Transitions on the Atomic Theories to the Theory of 12 Sense-bases (āyatana))

초록

철학의 과제를 간단히 요약하면, 일체의 존재 혹은 대상세계와 그것에 대한 인식의 문제를 해명하는 것이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 불교에서는 전통적으로 일체를 오온, 12처, 18계의 체계로 설명해 왔으며, 그 중에서도 12처를 가장 우수한 설명방식으로 채택하였다. 12처의 개념과 체계에 대한 해명은 대상세계의 존재방식과 인식의 과정에 대한 포괄적인 해석을 제공한다. 따라서 각 학파들의 12처 해석은 그 학파철학의 핵심을 반영하는 것으로, 설일체유부는 12처를 포함한 3과의 실재성을 주장한 반면, 경량부는 12처가유설을 주장하였다. 한편 세친의 12처 해석은 『구사론』과 『유식이십론』의 단계를 거치면서 전환을 이룬다. 초기 절충주의적 해석은 후기에 12처를 포함한 3과 모두의 가유설로 변화한다. 이는 12처에서 물질세계에 해당하는 10처를 극미/원자론으로 단일화하고, 다시 상좌 슈리라타의 1법처설과 종자설을 통합한 후에, 형이상학적 극미를 비존재로 규정하는 과정을 통하여 완성된다. 이 논문은 세친의 철학적 전이에 대한 고찰을 통해, 극미해석과 학파철학의 상관성을 입증해 보이고자 한다.

영어초록

The task of philosophy might be briefly defined as an investigation into the existence and the cognition of it, or the object world. In the Buddhist philosophical systems, the existence of all things are explained by the systems of five aggregates(skandha), twelve sense-organs(āyatana), and eighteen basic elements(dhātu), among which the twelve sense-organ was considered the most complete philosophical interpretation. It is because the concept and system of twelve sense-organs comprehensively include the object world in six categories of sense-data, form, sound, odor, taste, touch, and dharma, and their corresponding organs of the senses, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Each Buddhist school developed different interpretations on the system of twelve sense-organs. Sarvāstivādin, for example, argued that all of the three categories are real, but Sautrāntika only accepted the reality of the dhātu. Vasubandhu, however, underwent transitions in his interpretations on the reality of the twelve sense-organs. In Abhidharmakośabhaṣya Vasubandhu holds on to a rather eclectic compromise by admitting the reality of the dhātu and the āyatana, but later dramatically changed his view in Viṃśatikāto deny the reality of all three categories. Here Vasubandhu’s theory of atom and its transition plays a great role in unifying the ten indriyas of material existence into one formation of atoms, and integrating the theory of Seeds(bīja) with the notion of the reality of one dharma āyatana suggested by Śrīlāta, and finally completing his philosophical transition by annihilating the very existence of material form of atom based on the impossibility of metaphysical atomic existence. This paper aims to show the mutual relationship between the atomic theories and philosophical systems of each Buddhist school through an investigation on the Vasubandhu’s philosophical transitions in the theories of atom and āyatana.
