    초록

The purpose of this article is to assess the validity of the Buddhistideals of Wisdom and Compassion in contemporary world. As wellknown, the ultimate goal of Buddhism is to accomplish thehappiness of all beings through the practice of great Maitrī-Karuṇā(Compassion) based upon perfect Bodhi (Wisdom). “Bodhi” refers tothe enlightened wisdom of discerning truth, and “Maitrī-Karuṇā” tothe unconditional limitless love for all beings. Buddhism regardsthem as the loftiest level of spirituality that humans as social beingsshall pursue.
This article argues that the validity of these old ideals ofBuddhism is not confined within the periphery of Buddhist faith.
They may be revalidated in the globalized, multi-cultural andpost-ideological societies of today, where the wisdom of understanding diversities, tolerance of differences and the practice ofcompassion are highly valued as essential and respectful qualities ofdecent cosmopolitan citizens.
For revalorization of those Buddhist ideals of Wisdom andCompassion in today’s world, they need to be assessed in terms ofthe universal issues of humanities, not just from the perspective oftraditional Buddhology. They also need to be discussed in ways thatgeneral audiences, not just Buddhists, can appreciate. Demands foreasier and more succinct articulation of religious doctrines thus havebeen rising. Publications of Dalai Lama’s sermons have responded tothe demands and been consumed with great responses all over theworld. They have contributed to making Buddhist ideas moreaccessible to more wide ranges of readers.
The Art of Happiness is an example par excellence. Dalai Lama’s sermonsin the book is not pedantic nor dogmatic. He just leads readersthrough a series of reflexive meditations without any tone of evangelicalmission but with a universal humane atmosphere. His narratives, however,do not rely on secular emotions or dispositions. He explores human happinesson the basis of rational analyses from the very first page to the last.
The issue of happiness includes a wide range of difficult problems thatcannot be properly dealt with without very high level of wisdom. DalaiLama, however, gives clear and succinct explications of the subject in thebook so that any contemporary reader can easily follow. He does so as ifhe were showing how to solve a math problem on a blackboard. This is thegreatest merit of his book, The Art of Happiness.
In the course of developing the above arguments, this articlecovers the following topics: the basic meanings of the Buddhistideals Wisdom and Compassion as explicated in terms of thetraditional Buddholody (chaper II); Dalai Lama’s teachings on happiness, suffering, compassion and wisdom in The Art ofHappiness, as an excellent example of addressing them in terms ofuniversal human agenda, while abiding in the Buddhist perspective(chapter III); and revalidation of the Buddhist ideals of Wisdom andCompassion as advocated by Dalai Lama against the seriousproblems of the today’s world such as war, violence and hatred.
