초록

이 글은 「윤회설」에 나타난 두꺼비 알레고리 가운데 두꺼비 새끼들의 싸움이 우익의 내부에 잠재된 갈등임을 규명하기 위한 것이다. 「윤회설」의 주인공 종우는 좌익 측과의 싸움을 애초에 배제하며 상대하려 하지 않는다. 종우가 동정을 지키려다가 실패하고 결혼에 이르는 서사는 김동리의 절필했다가 해방 후 우익 측 기수로 자리를 잡아 가는 모습과 유사하다. 우익 내부는 적극적으로 친일을 했던 이들과 일제의 요구를 거부·회피하면서 소극적으로 협조했던 이들이 섞여 있다. 김동리의 친일에 대한 의식은 두꺼비 설화를 차용한 것과 연결되어 있으며, 능구렁이의 몸속에서 태어난 두꺼비 새끼의 출신 성분은 순수주의를 강조하는 종우와도 관련된다. 순수를 강조하다가 결국 결혼을 택한 종우는 절필을 했어도 어쩔 수 없는 소극적 협조의 멍에를 가진 김동리와 연결된다. 이 작품의 제목에 ‘윤회’가 있는 것도 일제에 잠식당했던 조선이 일제가 물러간 뒤에도 끝나지 않는 내부 싸움을 벌일 것임을 보여주기 위함이다.

영어초록

Kim Dong-li’s 「Yunhoiseol」 includes a Korean folk tale about ratsnake and toad. The folk tale has a story about a toad fed off by a ratsnake. A ratsnake swallowed a toad but the toad lays her eggs in ratsnake’s body. And then many baby toads grow up eating dead ratsnake’s body and fight each other. 「Yunhoiseol」 is not the first text in which ‘toad and ratsnake’ motif emerged. Though 「Dukeobi(A Toad)」 released in 1939 includes the story of ‘toad and ratsnake’, it doesn’t tell about the fight among many baby toads which grew up in ratsnake’s body. This folk tale can be usually interpreted as the story about the colonial era of Joseon. Generally, ratsnake stands for Japan imperialism, toad stands for Joseon, and the fight among the baby toads stands for the fight between communists and capitalists in Joseon.
This study focuses on the meaning of the fight among the baby toads, but it provides us with a new perspective about the fight motif on Kim Dong-li’s novel. The fight represents not between the left and the right but between the rights. That’s because Kim Dong-li excludes communists on the fight in 「Yunhoiseol」 and he was the one who stopped writing while any other writers were cooperating with Japan imperialism in the last season of the colonial era. Although Kim Dong-li can’t be freed entirely as a writer who lived colonial era in Joseon, the fact that he stopped writing by himself must not be dealt with the same with pro-Japanese collaborators. The end of his writing career does not always give Kim Dong-li the indulgence for what he had done. He was not a pro-Japanese collaborator but he was not completely honorable, either. He tried to distinguish himself from many pro-Japanese collaborators. Kim Don-li regards them as the one who lost virginity. That’s why Jong-woo in 「Yunhoiseol」 tried to keep his virginity though he loved Hye-ryeon. Kim Dong-li published a new novel 「Jiyeonki(A Record of the Kite)」, which included autobiographical image of Kim Don-li after 「Yunhoiseol」. These works are associated with Kim Dong-li’s awareness about pro-Japanese collaboration. With this way, this study presents a new path to interpretation of ‘toad and ratsnake’ tale in 「Yunhoiseol」.
