국립중앙도서관 소장 <설인귀전>의 개작 양상과 그 지향 (The Aspect and Orientation of the Adaptation of Possessed by the National Library of Korea)

초록

본고는 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>에서 발견되는 원전과는 달라진 개작 양상에 주목하고, 그 개작의 의미와 지향을 서지적 특성과 관련하여 분석한 것이다. 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>에서는 설인귀 형상의 변모, 보조 인물의 첨가뿐 아니라 장르적 변모까지 확인된다. 그리고 이러한 개작의 지향을 파악하는 데 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>의 서지적 특성이 주요하게 작용한다.
국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>에서는 설인귀가 예를 중시하는 군자로 형상화되며, 설인귀의 현실에 대한 비판적 인식이 강화되어 나타난다. 한국적 영웅소설 인물 형상으로의 전환이 발생한 것이다. 또한 충신 왕손오와 그 아들 왕철의 서사가 첨가되면서, 왕손오의 충절을 기리고 충신의 죽음에 보답하는 보은의 서사가 그 아들 왕철에게까지 이어진다. 그리고 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>에서는 여성과 관련된 서사가 확대된 개작 양상이 발견된다. 서술상의 단편적인 변용을 넘어서 장르적 변모까지 확인된다고 말할 수 있다.
이와 같은 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>의 개작 양상은 그 서지적 특성과도 연관된다. 이에 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>의 서지적 특성과 관련하여 개작의 의미와 지향을 짚어보았다. 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>이 고급스러운 궁체로 필사되었다는 점, 낙선재본 고전소설과 같이 매 면에 일정한 행수와 자수가 유지되고 있음에 주목하여, 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>은 상층 여성을 주 독자로 설정하였으며 상층 여성 독자의 취향과 기호에 맞게 개작되었다고 논했다. 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼> 가운데 특히 군자형 인물 설정, 조서와 서찰의 삽입, 현숙한 사대부가 여성의 면모 부각, 결연 서사의 첨입은 장편가문소설의 서사 문법을 따른 것이다. 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>은 장편가문소설의 서사 문법을 따르면서 ‘예교화(禮敎化)’, ‘고급화(高級化)’되었다. 이러한 특징이 발견되는 국립중앙도서관 소장 <셜인귀젼>은 영웅소설의 서술 기법은 물론이고 장편가문소설의 서술 기법까지 두루 활용한 <설인귀전>의 한 이본으로 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study focused on the aspect of the adaptation, which changed from the original text discovered in <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea and analyzed the meaning and orientation of the adaptation related to the bibliographic characteristics. In <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea, not only the transformation of the Seolingui’s shape, and the addition of supplementary characters but also genre transformation are confirmed. In addition, the bibliographic characteristics of <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea play a major role in understanding the orientation of the adaptation.
<Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea represents Seolingui as a noble man who emphasizes manners, and Seolingui’s critical recognition of the reality becomes reinforced. The transition to the character shape of a Korean heroic novel has occurred. Furthermore, as the narratives of a loyal subject, Sono Wang, and his son, Cheol Wang are added, narratives of gratitude to repay the death of the loyal subject as well as to remember the loyalty of Sono Wang continue to his son, Cheol Wang. Moreover, the aspect of the adaptation with added narratives related to females expands in <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea. It can be said that beyond the fragmentary variation in narratives, the genre transformation is confirmed.
This adaptation aspect of <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea is also connected to the bibliographic characteristics. Therefore, this study reviewed the significance and orientation of the adaptation related to the bibliographic characteristics of <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea. Paying attention to the points that <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea was transcribed in the classy court style of writing the Korean script, and the regular linage and number of characters are maintained on each page like the classical novels of Nakseonjaebon, this study argued that <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea established upper-class females as target readers and adapted the original text in compliance with the taste and preference of the upper-class female readers. Among <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea, in particular, the establishment of the noble man character, insertion of Royal messages and letters, focus on the female aspect of the wise and virtuous gentry, and addition of narratives about man-woman relationships followed the narrative grammar of the Jangpyeongamun novel. <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea followed the narrative grammar of the Jangpyeongamun novel and became ‘edification by manners’ and ‘enhancement’. <Seolinguijeon> possessed by the National Library of Korea in which these characteristics are discovered can be evaluated as a different version of <Seolinguijeon>, which widely utilized not only the narrative skills of the heroic novel but also those of the Jangpyeongamun novel.
