미수(眉叟) 허목(許穆)의 「춘추설(春秋說)」 연구 (A Study on Misu Heo Mok’s 「Chunchuseol」)

초록

본 연구는 허목이 「춘추설」을 지으면서 참조한 자료들을 찾아서 정리하고, 그가 말하는 춘추대의가 무엇인지를 살펴보기 위한 것이다.
허목은 그 자신이 50년 이상 읽어 온 옛글들을 축약하여 「경설」을 작성하였다. 그리고 그 글을 숙종에게바친다. 여기에는 젊은 왕으로 하여금, 옛글에 들어있는 성인들의 가르침을 본받아 훌륭한 정치를 펼쳐 줄 것을 기대하는 마음이 담겨져 있다.
「경설」 중의 한 편인 「춘추설」에는 『춘추』에 대한 그의 생각이 오롯이 담겨 있다. 먼저 그는 공자가 옛 성인들의 가르침을 『춘추』를 통하여 후세에 전하고 있다는 사실을 언급한다. 그리고 『춘추』는 인의를 닦고 인도를 밝히는 큰 도리라고 설명한다. 또, 왕도가 사라지고, ‘시’가 역할을 하지 못하는 시대에, 『춘추』가 있음으로써 그 역할을 할 수 있다고 말한다. 이어서, 춘추대의를 존군 의식, 인의의 가치관, 조선의 특수성을 반영한대일통 사상 등의 세 가지로 정리하여 제시한다. 그리고 『춘추』의 가르침에 따라, 인의를 닦아 인도를 세우고, 천도를 이루며, 지도를 평안하게 해야 한다고 주장한다.
허목이 「춘추설」을 지으면서 참조했던 다양한 옛글들을 찾아 그 맥락을 확인하는 과정을 통하여, 그가 어떤상황 인식을 가지고 시대적 상황에 대응했는지에 대한 일단을 찾을 수 있었다. 특히 참조했던 옛글과 미세하게 달라지는 표현들을 통하여, 그가 춘추시대의 중국을 중심으로 하는 대일통 사상으로부터 조선의 개별성을반영한 대일통 사상으로 발전시킬 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고 있다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.
17세기 조선이 안고 있던 과제는, 혹심했던 전란, 끊임없이 이어지는 정치적 혼란 그리고 빈번한 자연재해등으로 인해 피폐해진 민생을 극복하는 일이었다. 본 연구를 통하여 확인한 것은, 이와 같은 시대적·공간적과제에 대한 당대의 책임 있는 지식인 허목의 대응이다. 그것은 왕권 강화를 통하여, 인과 의를 바탕으로 하는안정적인 정치체제를 확립하고, 궁극적으로 혼란한 시대상을 해결하려는 것이었다.

영어초록

This study is to find and organize the materials that Heo Mok referred to while writing 「Chunchuseol(春秋說, A Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals)」 and to examine what is ‘the Great righteousness of Chunchu(春秋大義)’ he says.
Heo Mok wrote 「Gyeongseol(經說, A Commentary on the Scriptures of Confucianism)」 by abbreviating old writings he had read for more than 50 years. And he presented it to King Sukjong(肅宗). The meaning of his present of that book contained the expectation that the young king will emulate the teachings of the saints in the old writings and carry out great politics.
In 「Chunchuseol」, one of the 「Gyeongseol」, his thoughts on 『Chunchu(春秋)』 are completely contained. First, he mentions the fact that Confucius conveys the teachings of the old saints to posterity through 『Chunchu』. And, he explains 『Chunchu』 is a sacred discourse to cultivate the benevolence and righteousness, and expose the principles of humanity. He is also says that in an era when the principles of royal politics(王道) disappears and ‘the poetry’ could not play a role, 『Chunchu』 can be played the role of the scriptures of Confucianism. Continually, he proposes ‘the Great righteousness of Chunchu’ in three categories: the consciousness of respect for the King(尊君意識), the value of the benevolence and righteousness(仁義), and the idea of Great unification(大一統) reflecting the special characteristics of Joseon. Then, in accordance with the teachings of 『Chunchu』, he argues that the people should cultivate the benevolence and righteousness, formulate the principles of humanity, implement the principles of heaven and stabilize the principles of the earth.
Through the process of finding the various old writings and checking the context that Heo Mok referred to while writing 「Chunchuseol」, I was able to find a glimpse of what kind of situational awareness he had and what kind of responses to the situation at that time he did. In particular, through the expressions that differ slightly from those of the old writings he referred, I was able to confirm that he suggested the possibility of developing from the Chinese-centered Great unification ideas of the Spring and Autumn Period to the Great unification ideas of reflecting the special characteristics of Joseon.
The challenge of Joseon in the 17th century was to overcome the impoverished people’s livelihood due to severe war, constant political turmoil, and frequent natural disasters. What was confirmed through this study is the countermeasures of Heo Mok, a responsible intellectual of that period who has to overcome such temporal and spatial challenges. It was the effort to establish a stable political system based on the benevolence and righteousness through the strengthening of the royal authority and ultimately solve the chaotic times situation.
