고려 전기 老人賜設儀 설행과 정치적 의미 (The Significance of Senior Banquets in the Early Goryeo)

초록

이 글에서는 노인사설의의 정비와 의식 절차, 설행 계기와 의미에 관하여 검토하였다. 노인사설의는 국왕이 노인 등을 궁중으로 초청하여 잔치를 베푸는 의례를 가리킨다. 고려 초 목종대 후반 또는 현종 즉위년 무렵부터 노인에게 잔치를 베푸는 의례를 개설하였다. 문종대에 이르면 노인사설의에 대한 정비가 이루어졌다. 국왕이 궁 안에서 80세 이상의 국로와 서로·명부, 효자·순손·의부·절부, 환과고독과 독·폐질자 등에게 잔치를 베풀었다. 노인사설의는 설행 계기를 중심으로 세 가지 유형이 있었다. 첫째 신왕의 즉위, 왕실 책봉, 순행 등 왕실의 경사를 맞아서 사설의를 열었다. 둘째 가뭄이나 천변 등 재이를 물리치기 위해서 국왕이 노인 등 백성에게 은택을 내리고자 개최하였다. 셋째 국왕이 노인을 봉양하며 효도를 권장하는 덕치와 교화를 실현하는 의례로써 노인사설의를 거행하였다. 그 의식 절차를 보면 국왕이 노인과 효자 등에게 술과 음식을 대접하며, 꽃과 술 등 예물을 하사하였다. 이 의례의 목적을 살피면 첫째 국왕이 유교적 덕치를 펴서 노인과 불우한 백성을 구휼하는 데 있었다. 둘째 국왕이 국로를 우대하여 국정의 자문을 구하고 고언을 듣는 데 있었다. 셋째 국왕이 노인을 공경하고 효도를 실천하여 백성에게 효행을 권장하는 데 목적이 있었다. 노인사설의는 왕이 유교적 덕치와 교화를 실현하는 상징적 의례라는 점에 의미가 있었다.

영어초록

This paper examines the senior banquets in the early Goryeo and their procedures and aims to explore the significance of senior banquets. Senior Banquets were the ceremonies in which a king invited the elderly to the palace and treated them to foods and drinks. The system of banquets treating the elderly was established in early Goryeo during the last years of King Mokjong’s reign or around the time King Hyeonjong ascended to the throne. Later, King Munjong revamped the senior banquets. Kings held feasts at the palace for state elders over 80 years old, elderly in lower ranking positions or no position, court ladies, filial sons and grandsons, faithful widowers and widows, and the disadvantaged. Senior banquets can be categorized into three groups based on their motives. First, Senior banquets were held when the nation celebrated joyous occasions such as a king’s ascension to the throne, the investiture of the royal family, royal tours. Secondly, when natural calamities like drought or extraordinary natural phenomena occured, the king gracefully held a senior banquet. Thirdly, senior banquets were held as a symbolic ritual to enlighten people and to perform Confucian politics that emphasized respecting senior citizens and practicing filial piety to one's parents. The procedures of the ceremony include the king’s treat to the elderly and filial sons with foods and drinks, followed by granting gifts of flowers and drinks to them. The purpose and significance of the ceremony are the following. First, the king intended to relieve elderly and the disadvantaged through his virtuous ruling. Second, the ceremony was significant as the king favored state elders and sought consultation regarding national affairs. Third, the ceremony was meaningful as the king’s performance of filial duties and respect to the elderly served as a recommendation for his people. The significance of the senior banquet lies in its role as a symbolic ritual where the king performed Confucian virtues and enlightenment.
