만공의 정신사와 총독부에서의 ‘禪機 發露’(1937) 사건 (Geistesgeschichte of Mangong and Seongi Ballo Incident(1937) at the Government General)

초록

근대 고승, 禪師에서 간과할 수 없는 대상인 滿空(1871~1946)이 있다. 지금껏 그에 대한 연구는 禪思想, 禪學院 등에 경도되었다. 그러나 본 고찰에서는 만공의 행적을 ‘精神史’라는 관점으로, 만공이 1937년 총독부에 서 행한 ‘禪機發露’ 사건의 성격을 조명하려고 한다. 그러면서 만공의 행적은 독립운동의 범주에 포함되었음을 강조하고자 한다.
필자는 만공의 생애와 사상을 불교의 관점에서만 보지 말 것을 제언한다. 물론 만공은 큰스님이었고 근대불교사에서 지울 수 없는 업적을 갖고 있으나 불교적인 관점에서만 보면 만공의 지성, 독립정신의 이해에 제한을 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 필자는 만공 정신사의 본질을 인간의 자유,평등을 지향하는 자주, 자립의 정신으로 본다. 때문에 만공의 정신은 한국 독립운동의 이념이었다.
만공은 조선총독이 주재하는 불교 진흥책을 주제로 열린 31본산 주지회의(1937.2.27)에서 일제의 불교정책을 정면으로 비판하였다. 이 사건은 한용운이 ‘선기발로’ 사건으로 지칭하였다. 본고에서는 그 사건 전후의 만공의 주요 행적을 적출하면서, 사건에 담긴 뜻을 들추어내려고 한다.
필자는 만공의 정신사의 궤적을 ‘기승전결’의 구도로 보려고 한다. 즉 起의 단계는 禪學院 창건(1921), 承의 단계는 朝鮮佛敎 禪宗의 創宗 및 首座大會 선서문(1935), 展의 단계는 총독부에서의 ‘禪機發露’ 사건(1937)로 보고, 結의 단계는 遺敎法會에서의 梵行團(1941) 출범과 간월암 기도이었다. 즉 ‘선기발로’ 사건은 우연한 것이 아니고, 만공 정신사의 발전단계에서 나왔다. 마지막으로 이 연구가 만공, 근대고승, 근대 정신사의 연구에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

영어초록

Among the master monks in modern history, Mangong(滿空,1871~1945) is one of the master monks that cannot be neglected.
Most studies regarding Mangong are focused on Zen ideals or Zen Academy. However, this study shall resume the perspective of Geistesgeschichte on Mangong’s history, and review Seongi Ballo(禪機發露) incident he executed at the Government General in 1937.
Through this review, the author attempts to emphasize that the history of Mangong can be categorized as acts of Korea’s independence movement.
The author proposes not to limit Mangong’s life and philosophy to the perspective of Buddhism. It cannot be denied that Mangong was a Buddhist monk and made significant achievements in the history of modern Buddhism in Korea, but limiting his achievements with the perspective of Buddhism can restrict the scope of understanding Mangong’s intellect and will for Korea’s independence. The author interprets the essence of Mangong’s Geistesgeschichte to be the freedom of man, the independence for equality and the will of self‑reliance. Therefore, the author view’s Mangong’s spirit to be in line with the principles of Korea’s independence movement.
On February 27, 1937, Mangong made a direct critique of Japan’s Buddhist policies at the 31st Main Temple Chief Monks Conference hosted by the Governor General of Joseon and held under the agenda of Buddhism promotion policies. This incident was named “Seongi Ballo” by Han Yong Un. This study attempts to understand the true meaning of the incident by addressing major activities of Mangong immediately before and after the incident. The author will present a four‑step composition of introduction, development, turn and conclusion for the Geistesgeschichte of Mangong. The introduction is the establishment of Zen Academy in 1921, development is the launch of Seonjong (Zen Buddhism) and statement made at the seat of honor gathering in 1935, turn is the Seongi Ballo incident at the Government General in 1937, and the conclusion is the launch of Beomhaengdan(梵行團) at the Yugyo Buddhist ceremony(遺敎法會) in 1941. The author of this study believes that the Songi Ballo incident was not an accidental event, but an event that developed and generated from the Geistesgeschichte of Mangong. In the end, the author of this study presents this study in hopes it will be able to contribute in Mangong, monks and Geistesgeschichte of the modern era.
