통학(通學)의 근대사: 경인선 기차통학을 중심으로 (The Modern History of Commuting to School: A Study of the Gyeongin Railway Line)

초록

이 글은 식민지기 경인철도를 이용한 기차통학생들의 실태를 복원하고 그들의회고를 통해 기차 공간을 분할하는 논리들에 대해 검토한 것이다.
식민지 조선에서 근대적 교통수단으로서의 기차는 근대적 교육에 대한 열망과만나 기차통학이라는 새로운 일상을 창출했다. 1900년에 완전 개통된 경인철도의 경우, 인천 내에 공·사립 초등학교가 다수 세워져 있어 통학 수요가 컸을 뿐만 아니라, 교육시설이 집중된 경성으로의 교통의 편의성 때문에, 일찍부터 기차통학생들이 등장했으며 전체 통학생 중 차지하는 비중도 컸다.
기차통학생 수는 교육 서비스의 공급과 수요의 문제를 넘어 다양한 변수들의영향을 받았다. 인천 내 중등교육시설의 신설은 경인철도를 이용한 기차통학생수를 감소시키고, 일제의 대륙 침략으로 촉발된 경인 지역의 공업지대화는 이 일대 인구 증가와 함께 기차통학생 수를 증가시키기도 했다. 그러나 교육시설의 보급에도 불구하고 학생들은 더 나은 교육을 위해 기차에 오르기를 주저하지 않았으며, 전시물자 수송을 우선시한 전시체제하 기차 운행은 기차통학생들에게 커다란 타격을 가하기도 했다.
이처럼 경인철도는 경인 간 지역차로 인한 불균형을 해소해 주는 역할도 했지만, 그를 이용하는 기차통학생들은 교통난이나 입학난 해결을 위한 희생양이 되어, 결국 경성 진입의 벽은 다시금 높아져 갔다.
뿐만 아니라 기차 내에서도 다양한 공간 분할이 이루어졌다. 1등·2등·3등의 객차 구분은 본래 서비스와 요금의 차이로 인한 것이지만, 계급·민족·성별 등의 구분과 쉽게 동일시되거나 분할의 근거가 되었다. 그것은 차등적 사회에 대한일종의 ‘표절’이었으나, 그 과정에서 ‘모델’화된 기차는 거꾸로 사회의 차등성을정당화하는 상징으로도 활용될 수 있었다.

This study presents the reality of students commuting by the Gyeongin Railway Line(京 仁線) and reviews the logic of dividing train space through a retrospection of the colonial period.
The train as a modern means of transportation in Colonial Korea met the desire for modern education, creating a new way of everyday life called commuting by train. In the case of Gyeongin Railway(京仁鐵道), which was fully opened in 1900, students commuting by train appeared early on and the proportion of these students to all commuting students was high, not only because of the high demand for commuting due to many public and private elementary schools in Incheon(仁川) but also the convenience of transportation to Gyeongseong(京城), where educational institutions were concentrated.
The number of students commuting by train was influenced by many variables beyond the problem of the supply and demand of educational services. The establishment of new secondary educational institutions reduced the number of students commuting by train, and the industrialization in the Seoul-Inchon area triggered by the Japanese invasion of the continent increased the population and thus the number of students commuting by train in the area. Despite the supply of educational institutions, however, the number of students commuting by train increased for better education, but on the other hand, there were also situations in which commuting by train was impossible due to train services under a war footing in which transportation of war material was prioritized.
As such, Gyeongin Railway played the role of resolving the imbalance caused by regional differences between Seoul and Incheon, but commuting students using the train became the scapegoat for solving traffic congestions or school admission problems, ultimately raising the entry barrier to Gyeongseong.
Furthermore, various spatial divisions were created in the train. The division of passenger cars into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class was originally due to differences in services and fare, but it was readily regarded in the same light as divisions of class, ethnicity, and gender and became the basis for separation. It was a kind of “plagiarism” for differentiating society, but the train “modeled” in the process, which is an idealized original, could be used as a symbol justifying the differentiation in reverse.
