초의의 禪과 茶의 사상적 연관성 고찰 (A Study on Seon Master Choeui: Ideological Relevance between Seon(Zen) and Tea)

초록

조선 후기의 禪師 草衣意恂은 자신의 선사상을 현실 속에서 실천하며 선
사상뿐만 아니라 다양한 문화면에도 지대한 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 차와 관련
해서는 개인의 차원을 넘어 오늘날 한국차문화의 정신적 근간이 되고 있다.
초의선사의 禪觀은 不二門[中道, 中正]을 통해 一心, 즉 본성을 드러내는
데 집중되어 있다. 일심은 不動心, 空이며, 본성을 드러내는 門으로서의 불
이문이다. 또한 선사는 선 중심의 선교겸수를 중시하였으며, 다양한 수행법
들을 수용하면서 현실의 삶 속에서 隨處作主를 실천하고자 하였다.
선사의 사상과 삶 전반에 나타난 不二의 핵심은 ‘中道’이다. 『東茶頌』에서
언급하고 있는 중정도 바로 중도이며, ‘茶’를 통해 이 중도의 구현, 곧 선의
궁극 세계를 실현하고자 했다. 중도사상을 바탕으로 體와 神의 無分離인 불
이를 강조했고, 또 眞茶, 眞水의 본성을 설명했으며, 그리고 이는 곧바로 理
事不離한 선세계의 구현으로 이어지고 있다. 따라서 중도는 선사의 선사상
임과 동시에 차의 정신이고, 차와 선이 불이문을 통해 드러난 一味의 경지
이며, 선사상이 생활에서 卽現되어 나타난 선의 궁극적 경지이다.
또한 선사가 차와 같이 실천적이고 생활적인 면을 중시한 것은 隨處作主
를 이루며 철저히 선사로서의 삶을 살고자 했던 것에 기인한다. 그는 각각
의 상황과 處處에서 作主를 실천하며 차를 따거나 만들고 마시는 행위 자
체를 眞法化했다. 그 자체가 이미 삼매 속에 살아가는 禪行이었으며, 그것이 일체이고 중도이자 또한 茶道였던 것이다. 선사에게 있어서 다도의 실행
은 곧 禪修行의 실천이자 완성이었다.
이러한 초의의 중도사상과 수처작주의 삶의 태도는 茶, 詩, 書, 畵 등 다
양한 방면에 내재되어 선의 생활화와 현실화를 이루고 있다. 특히나 선사의
차 세계는 침체되어 있던 한국 차문화의 중흥을 이끌며 오늘날 한국차의
정신을 대표하고 있다는 것에 무엇보다 중요한 의미가 있다.

영어초록

Choeui Eusun, Seon master of the late Joseon Dynasty, greatly
influenced not only Seon thought but also a wide range of cultures
as he put his Seon thought into practice in daily life. He, among
others, laid the spiritual foundation to the Korean tea culture and it
goes beyond the individual level.
Master Choeui’s view on Seon thought focuses on manifesting our
true nature, One Mind(一心), through the Gate of Non-duality(不二
門) dubbed as the Middle Way(中道) or Impartiality(中正). One Mind
represents Unmoving Mind(不動心), Emptiness(空), and the
Non-duality Gate that manifests our true nature. In addition, the
Seon Master placed importance both on Seon practice and on
doctrinal study while centering on Seon, and sought to practice Make
Yourself Master Wherever You Are(隨處作主) in day-to-day life by
adopting various practice methods.
352 한국불교학The essence of the Non-duality appeared in the Choeui’s thought
and in his life lies in the Middle Way. Expressed in 『Dongdasong(東
茶頌)』, Impartiality refers to the Middle Way and, through tea,
Choeui pursued the realization of the Middle Way, namely the
ultimate state of Seon. Based on the Middle Way, he highlighted
Non-duality, that is body(water) and mind(tea) are not separate
entities. He also elaborated on the nature of properly boiled quality
water and correctly prepared tea, and that leads to embodiment of
Seon in which the substance and phenomenon are not separate.
Therefore, the Middle Way is Choeui’s Seon thought and at the
same time the spirit of tea ceremony. It is a state that tea and Seon
share the same taste, exhibited through the Gate of Non-duality, and
the ultimate state that Seon is manifested in everyday life.
Besides, his valuing something practical such as tea is derived
from his personal attempt: he worked towards a life of true Seon
master by practicing Make Yourself Master Wherever You Are. In
each and every situation and place, he practiced Make Yourself
Master Wherever You Are. Whether it was picking tea leaves, or
making and drinking tea, he regarded the act as practice symbolizing
the truth. The act itself is already Seon practice in Samadhi. It also
embodies Oneness, the Middle Way and tea ceremony. To the Seon
Master, conducting tea ceremony means practicing and perfecting
Seon.
Choeui’s view on the Middle Way and attitude towards MakeYourself Master Wherever You Are were incorporated in a number
of areas such as tea, poetry, calligraphy and painting and thus Seon
was realized in everyday life. His perspective on tea attaches a great
significance in that it revives the stagnant Korean tea culture
representing the spirit of Korean tea.
